日本の文化が詰まった伝統工芸品である近江上布は、夏の上質な着物地です。
日本を代表する麻織物の産地である滋賀県彦根市は、17世紀に発展しました。
近江上布には、生平(きびら)と絣織(かすりおり)の2種類があり、それぞれで布の材料が変わってきます。
生平は手うみの大麻糸を使い、絣は型紙捺染(かたがみなっせん)、櫛押捺染(くしおしなっせん)の絣糸を使って布を作っていきます。
近江上布は、高級扇子、シャツ、ワンピース、ハンカチ、反物、小物、雛人形、浴衣などに使われており、高級素材を使ったこれらの作品はとても魅力的。
日本の夏を快適に過ごせる素材なので、特に衣類がおすすめです。

日本の文化が詰まった伝統工芸品である近江上布は、職人の技術、技法を凝らした作品で職人の手仕事によって出来上がります。
まずは、近江上布の原料となる苧麻(ちょま)から繊維の部分を丁寧に取っていきます。
苧麻を少し濡らすと柔らかくなり繊維が取りやすくなります。
苧麻の繊維を指で裂き、指で撚り(より)ながら繋ぎます。
糸になったら木織り機で布を作っていきます。
