Single-tree cherry blossom spots in Nagano City🌸 ① Isozakura Jinja’s Jindai Zakura A legend says the staff thrust by susanoo no mikoto grew into this massive tree. With a trunk circumference of about 9 meters, it is an estimated 1,200-year-old Edo-higan cherry and is designated a National Natural Monument. Typical peak season: late April to early May Location: Nagano City, 513 Izumihira ② Kinasa Takahashi’s weeping cherry This 400-year-old weeping cherry stands in the front garden of Takahashi Community Center and is a Nagano City Natural Monument. Takahashi Yakushido houses a group of stone statues, including a finely carved Saigoku Sanjusankasho Kannon. If you are visiting Japan in the spring, you can't possibly miss Cherry Blossoms. The most celebrated symbol of a season for a nation that loves to celebrate its distinct seasons, beautiful cherry blossoms abound for a glorious period in March and April. The blooming schedule is national news, and duly reported with maps and dates by serious reporters to an audience of millions. Another harbinger of spring, the Japanese Bush Warbler, enjoys just as long a history of being celebrated in Japanese art and culture, but these days plays distant second fiddle to the iconic pink blossoms. As Japan becomes more urbanized and less of the population comes into regular contact with this delightful songbird, its no wonder why. But the Warbler, too, has deep roots in Japanese culture. Its Japanese name Uguisu, lends itself to numerous Japanese place names and vocabulary. Its distinctive call is still used as a shorthand for spring in Japanese media, and the bird has graced countless pieces of Japanese art, from poems of the Nara period to ukiyo-e prints. Even its droppings enjoy a life of their own as a skin-whitening treatment! While it can be rare in Japan's largest urban centers today, the Japanese Bush Warbler can still be found (or rather, heard) in great numbers all over the country. Its gentle green color and playful hopping is pleasant to see, but it can be hard to lay eyes on as it hops about in thick foliage. You are much more likely to hear it than see it! Listen for its distinct "Hooo-hokekyo, hooo-hokekyo" whenever you are outdoors! More than any other, it is the bird most truly emblematic of spring in Japan.

Spring at Cafe Jardin in Jardin feels like a season gently wrapped in color. In April in Takamatsu, the moss phlox are in full bloom. I made a special trip to this countryside café; as my car entered, the surroundings grew quiet, leaving city noise behind and only the wind and birdsong. Walking into the grounds, my eyes were instantly filled with a vast swath of pink—the moss phlox stretched like a carpet, rolling with the terrain and reflecting off a nearby pond, creating a beauty that seemed almost unreal. I chose an outdoor seat, admired the sea of flowers, and ordered a simple lunch and coffee. The food here is unpretentious yet carefully prepared: light dishes like pizza and pasta arrived at just the right temperature and with inviting aromas, naturally slowing the pace of the meal. What I loved most was the atmosphere. There was no urban noise, only the sound of a breeze through the blossoms, and occasional insects and small animals flitting about. I heard that during the moss phlox peak there is a "Flower Festival" that draws many visitors who come specifically to see this spectacular sight. Before leaving, I walked slowly around the garden once more. The pink, white, and pale purple moss phlox shimmered softly in the sunlight, as if the whole of spring had been gathered into this patch of land. If spring in Takamatsu had a color, it would probably be the color of these moss phlox.
