In August 1967 (Showa 42), when former King Birendra (then Crown Prince) of Nepal, who was studying at the University of Tokyo, visited Ito City, the Association of Friends of Atami Plants presented Atami cherry blossoms and Ume Plum seeds. In return, the seeds of "Himalayan cherry" given by Nepal in May of the following year 43 were sown and grown at a municipal farm in Shimotaga, Atami City in July of the same year.
