Drifting ice off the coast of Shiretoko (Rausucho)
is home to drift ice and Steller's sea eagles.
When dozens of Steller's sea eagles and white-tailed eagles gather, their large size creates a truly dramatic sight.

Off the coast of Shiretoko (Rausucho)
Here are the drift ice and a Steller's sea eagle.
This weekend it was warm in Hokkaido
and a southerly wind blew,
so I was worried the drift ice might be pushed away,
but the ice band remained.
The drift ice will be gone next month,
and from late April you can see orcas and whales.

Jewelry Ice at Otsu Coast in Toyokorocho, Hokkaido
Ice that formed on the Tokachi River drifts out to sea
and the waves polish it into transparent, jewel-like pieces of ice.
Visitors aiming for standout photos select well-shaped pieces, carry them,
pour hot water or rinse them to remove sticking snow and sand,
and arrange the ice by stacking or standing it to create artworks for shooting,
but they are beautiful just as they are in nature.

This is the SL Fuyu-no-Shitsugen Train
I rode it for the first time in two years
and enjoyed photographing it the next day.
It runs mainly on weekends through early March
and I think you can board on Saturdays or Sundays if you don't insist on choosing a specific seat.
