The National Institute of Genetics, located in Mishima City, Shizuoka Prefecture
Recently, on Saturday, April 5, 2025, the institute held its one-day-a-year public open day.
In addition to viewing approximately 650 cherry trees of about 230 varieties planted on the grounds, visitors enjoyed lectures and exhibitions.
A free shuttle bus from Mishima Station drew a long queue at the boarding point at times, and many people clearly enjoyed the visit.
Although the public can visit only one day a year, it truly is wonderful to see so many different cherry varieties here!
This year, the row of cherry trees in front of the facility was nearly in full bloom and looked beautiful!
See you next year.

Born in Saitama Prefecture. Graduated from the School of Medicine at Tokyo Medical and Dental University (now Tokyo Science University). While working as a physician, she pursued research study in the United States and obtained the USMLE, among other achievements. In 2009, following the birth of her first child and her husband’s transfer to Mishima, she stepped away from frontline medical work and experienced parenting in isolation in Mishima.
Drawing on her own experience, alongside her medical work she launched Mama to Ne in 2014 as a child-rearing support initiative. In 2021, amid the COVID-19 pandemic, she established Ahiru Library, a one-box bookshelf owner–style private library, to create a place that connects not only child-rearing families but also other local residents at risk of isolation, bringing together interesting people from the community.
She has lived in Mishima for more than 15 years and, keeping the outsider’s perspective, is cultivating with colleagues a place where locals and newcomers mingle and connect through books in this town.
