Hakone Ekiden Museum
A display of the Hakone yosegi marquetry trophies awarded to the winners of the outbound race is now on view!
Since 1997, with the cooperation of the outbound winners from the 73rd race onward, the Hakone Ekiden Museum has exhibited the Tokyo-Hakone University Ekiden outbound victory trophies in the museum’s special exhibition space through Sunday, March 31, 2024. This year marked the 100th anniversary of the Hakone Ekiden, and both the outbound and return legs drew loud cheers from along the course. The runners’ determined efforts to win left a powerful impression.
The outbound victory trophies are crafted in Hakone yosegi marquetry, a traditional Hakone craft. Artisans combine woods of different colors to create patterns, so no two pieces are identical. Each trophy is therefore a one-of-a-kind championship cup in the world.
Please come and see up close the valuable Hakone yosegi trophies provided for this special exhibition by three schools: Kanagawa University, Toyo University, and Soka University, each representing the races they won.
Location: Hakone Ekiden Museum (special exhibition space)
Exhibition period: Until Sunday, March 31, 2024
*Please note that the period and contents of the exhibition may change due to circumstances.*
Opening hours: Weekdays 10:00–16:30 / Weekends and holidays 9:30–17:00
*Last admission is 30 minutes before closing.*
Admission: Adults 650 yen / Elementary and junior high school students 450 yen (admission fee covers the exhibition)
Exhibits:
■ Eleven outbound victory trophies from the 1997 73rd race onward
・Outbound winners for the 73rd, 74th, and 78th races: Kanagawa University
・Outbound winners for the 85th, 86th, 87th, 88th, 90th, 94th, and 95th races: Toyo University
