"The Sotomo Strait and Monji-gasaki illuminated by the morning sun, with the silhouette of the Kanmon Bridge"
Photographed: July 22, 2024
Monji-gasaki is located on the Kyushu side of the Sotomo Strait, the narrowest part of the Kanmon Strait, where Kyushu, as an island, is closest to Honshu.
At the tip, there is the Hesaki Lighthouse, which combines the morning sun, the tidal currents at your feet, and passing ships, making it one of the photo spots in the Kanmon Strait.
This favorite shot taken from the Karato side of Shimonoseki City, capturing the morning at the gateway to Kyushu, was submitted to the 22nd NEXCO West Japan Photo Contest and was awarded the Grand Prize in the Best Shot category for highways.
(It was also used in the calendar distributed by NEXCO West Japan, made from award-winning works, for September of last year (2025).

Kokura Komoji Memorial Cross (3 pieces)
Photographed: May 6, 2026
Equipment: SONY α7II, + Sigma 20–200mm
The Memorial Cross stands 20 meters tall on the hillside of Komoji-yama, overlooking the city of Kokura, featuring a large "cross"
It was established in Showa 25 (1951 - Japan's recovery of independence was on April 28, 1952)
This cross was erected by the U.S. military commanders stationed in Kokura at the time to honor the fallen compatriots who fought to protect world peace alongside South Korea as UN forces
Later, due to the expansion of residential areas that posed a risk of collapse, it has been moved 50 meters back from its original position
As a result, it no longer overlooks the city, but it still stands quietly towards the distant Korean Peninsula where they fell
Behind this cross, the Komoji burning ceremony, which welcomes the spirits during the Obon festival, has been held since Showa 24, and at the foot of this cross, there is a temple and burial site of the Ogasawara family, who ruled Kokura for a long time, along with a large municipal cemetery
Similar to the pagoda in Moji Port, the former Kiku District is a place where the sun sets across the sea in front, making it a very conscious location of the Western Pure Land when standing on the mountain.

Mojiko Sunset
People capturing the sunset illuminating the Retro Lighthouse at the West Coast Breakwater
Photo taken on March 21, 2026
While I was taking a close-up of the lighthouse lit by the sunset, someone noticed what I was photographing. Just as I thought, "Alright, I've got it," and looked away from the viewfinder, I was spoken to, so I stepped aside to let them have the spot and instinctively took another shot
I don't know who they are, but I hope I captured a favorite shot that reminds me of Mojiko.

Shimonoseki Karato's Lover's Lighthouse in the morning
At the tip of the Honshu side of the Kanmon Strait, Karado in Shimonoseki City
The lighthouse that stands in pairs at the exit of the port where the ferry to Moji Port on the Kyushu side departs is called the "lover lighthouse", and it is said that if you pledge your love here, you will be united
Beyond the silhouette of the lighthouse in the photo is the tip of Kyushu, where the Mojisai Lighthouse stands
The narrowest part of this strait is called Hayatoseto, and currents of up to 8 knots wash ships and wash both shores
The Kanmon Humanitarian Tunnel passes under this Seto, and the Kanmon Bridge connects the two banks in the sky

Mekari Shrine
The Mekari Shrine, which stands on the Kyushu side of the Kanmon Strait, is said to have been built around 200 AD, and has been revered by many people to this day as a festival to celebrate the god who controls the tides
The current Shrine was rebuilt in 1767 (Meiwa 4) by Ogasawara Tadaso, the lord of the Ogura Domain
The midnight Mekari Shinto ritual on Lunar New Year's Day, in which wakame seaweed from Hayatose is harvested and offered to the gods, has been held annually since Empress Shen Gong first Implementation to pray for safe navigation and good fishing

In the city of Kokura, the castle tower of Kokura Castle seen from the bridge inside
The castle tower of Kokura Castle, built in 1602, was destroyed by fire in 1837, and the castle itself was reduced to ashes in the civil war of the Four Borders War (a defensive war against the Second Conquest of Choshu)
However, with the strong enthusiasm of Local residents, it was rebuilt in its current form in 1959 and has become a symbol of the city
