Video introduction of the rakugan (wild geese) offered at the puja at Senshuji Temple in Tsu City, Mie Prefecture, Japan. In this 4K video, you can see the traditional Japanese sweet rakugan, made by Okadaya and offered at Senjuji Temple, as if you were actually seeing it with your own eyes. [Video] 0:28 - Rakugan [Video] 1:50 - A Buddhist Service at Senjuji Temple Senjuji Temple is the head temple of the Takata sect of Shinshu Buddhism, which has more than 600 temples throughout Japan. Located in Tsu, Mie, in Japan's Tokai region, the temple houses Nyoraido and Mieido, the first buildings in Mie Prefecture to be designated as national treasures, as well as many other national treasures related Buddhism and Important Cultural Properties designated by the government of Japan. Every year from January 9 to 16, Shinshu's largest Buddhist memorial service, Hoonko, is held here. The signature traditional Japanese sweet offered at the altar of such an important Buddhist service at Senshuji Temple is rakugan. Okadaya is the sweets shop that supplies these rakugan to Senjuji Temple. Okadaya was founded in 1868 and is a long-established confectionary in Tsu, Mie, the same city as Senjuji Temple. Currently, in addition to Japanese sweets such as rakugan, sakura okoshi, and otafuku manju, Okadaya also sells fresh and colorful birthday cakes, wedding cakes, and cakes with illustrations, made with seasonal ingredients. What Is Rakugan? Origin, Characteristics, and How It's Made Photo:Rakugan Rakugan is a traditional Japanese sweet commonly used in tea ceremony or as an offering. It's made by kneading grain-derived flour with sugar or syrup, pressing it into a mold, forming it, and drying it. Rakugan is also a type of higashi. Higashi refers to dried wagashi with less than 20% water content. Major types of higashi include rakugan, konpeito, senbei, and yatsuhashi. Wagashi can be classified into three categories: fresh confectioneries, semi-perishable confectioneries, and dried confectioneries. Rakugan, wasanbon, and yatsuhashi belong to the dried confectionery category. Rakugan, which are very hard, are mostly made of sugar, meaning that the flavor of the ingredients can be enjoyed as is, and because they contain little water, they are resistant to mold and last a long time. Because of its unique hardness, it's easy to form patterns on the surface, and it's possible to make patterns in the shape of flowers, family crests, cranes and turtles, and other auspicious symbols, and it can also be colored in various colors with food coloring. These characteristics are what make rakugan suitable as an offering, and thus they are frequently used as such. There are two popular theories about the origin of the name rakugan (落雁): the first is that the name comes from the Chinese sweet nanrakukan (軟落甘) and that the name changed over time, and the second is that it was named after Katata no Rakugan (堅田落雁, Wild Geese Returning Home at Katata) one of the Eight Views of Omi. Rakugan are said to have originated when a disciple of the Buddha served rakugan to monks during the Bon Festival. The word "rakugan" (落雁) means "geese flying down from the sky," and is a well-known seasonal word used in Japanese poetry to represent autumn. Rakugan, Wasanbon, and Hakusetsuko – Three Types of Japanese Sweets Photo:Wasanbon Hakusetsuko and wasanbon are two other types of higashi and are difficult to distinguish from rakugan. Here, we'll explain the differences and uses of rakugan, hakusetsuko and wasanbon. Both rakugan and hakusetsuko can be colored red and white and decorated with patterns, and are typical traditional Japanese sweets used as offerings for the Bon Festival. Rakugan are made from steamed and dried rice powder, while hakusetsuko are made from raw rice powder. Wasanbon is made by molding only wasanbon, a type of sugar, and therefore differs from rakugan and hakusetsu-kan in both ingredients and how it's made. Wasanbon is a specialty of Kagawa and Tokushima prefectures, and is made by refining sugarcane juice. Today, it's considered a high-end sugar due to its scarcity and the decrease in the number of producers. It's mainly used as sugar for Japanese sweets, and is especially famous for its use in higashi sweets. How to Store Rakugan and How Long It Can Be Kept Photo:Bon Festival offerings The reason why rakugan is used as an offering is because its ability to last for a long time. So, by when should rakugan be eaten? If stored properly, rakugan can be kept for more than a month and eaten without any problems. On the other hand, if they are not stored properly, their quality may deteriorate quickly. The key to preserving the quality of rakugan is to avoid humidity and sunlight. Because of its high sugar content, rakugan easily absorbs moisture, especially during Japan's rainy season, and when it absorbs moisture, it spoils much quicker. In addition, colored rakugan will lose their color when exposed to sunlight. If they are to be served after being dedicated as an offering, it's important to pay attention to humidity, sunlight, and the time of year they are offered. To prevent spoiling from humidity, we recommend wrapping the rakugan in film. As tea sweets, rakugan can be stored in an airtight container without losing quality if kept out of direct sunlight. How to Enjoy Rakugan and Recipes They Can Be Used In Photo:Rakugan sugar The following is a list of delicious ways to eat rakugan as well as recipes they can be used in. Since the main ingredient of rakugan is sugar, it can be processed into a powder using a grater, food processor, or mill, and used as a substitute for sugar in a wide variety of applications. For example, we recommend using it in coffee, tea, or other beverages, or in yogurt or pancakes, as it's particularly easy to utilize. By using it in these ways, you can enjoy the taste of rakugan that have hardened over time, as opposed to eating them as they are. Summary of Rakugan, a Traditional Japanese Sweet In this article, we introduced rakugan, a higashi (dried confectionery) that's also offered at the Buddhist memorial service at Senjuji Temple. With a long history, rakugan has been loved throughout Japan to the extent that it has been selected as one of the three most famous confectioneries in the country. If you have the chance to try this traditional Japanese sweet, definitely give it a go! -

You don't have to know what they're saying, just give a simple "Okay," and you should have no problems ordering. Another tip to keep in mind when ordering, is to point at the pictures on the menu. This will make it much easier to order. If there aren't any pictures, the Google Translate app's real time translation feature is super useful, so definitely give it a try! [Video] 3:40 - Asking the Staff for a Recommendation 【動画どうが】3:40~ 店員てんいんさんにおすすめを聞きく様子ようす Izakaya Food – Menu Items, Courses, and Prices at Izakaya in Japan 日本にほんの居酒屋いざかやでの注文ちゅうもん方法ほうほう Photo:An izakaya party menu(写真しゃしん:居酒屋いざかやの宴会メニューえんかいめにゅー) Japan's izakaya often serve a wide variety of dishes. You can often find small dishes using a variety of vegetables, sashimi platters, and things like karaage (Japanese fried chicken), yakitori (chicken skewers), takoyaki (fried balls of batter with octopus), and gyoza (pot stickers), as well as larger dishes like seafood bowls and even ramen. Besides the individual dishes and drinks, most izakaya in Japan offer a "tabehoudai" (食べ放題, all you can eat) or "nomihoudai" (飲み放題, all you can drink) course as well. Both courses are structured roughly the same. They usually last 90-120 minutes and allow you to choose most things on the menu. If you order something that isn't included in the course, it will be added onto your bill. The server will generally explain what you can and cannot order with the courses. The prices for these courses vary by izakaya, but both tabehoudai and nomihoudai generally cost somewhere around ¥2,000-¥3,000+. Some izakaya even offer a "tabe-nomihoudai" (食べ飲み放題) course which combines them into an "all-you-can-eat-and-drink" course. You can expect this to cost around ¥4,000-¥5,000+. Something to keep in mind when ordering these courses is that, in general, if one person orders it, everyone has to order it. This is to prevent one person from getting the course and sharing their food or drinks with everybody else. There are some places that don't require everyone to order the course, but these restaurants are not common. Paying the Bill at an Izakaya in Japan Photo:Staff taking payment at a table(写真しゃしん:席せきで会計かいけいをする居酒屋店員いざかやてんいん) When paying your bill at an izakaya in Japan, just like when ordering, it's commonplace to call the staff over with "sumimasen!" The easiest phrase for telling the server you want to pay your bill is "okaikei onegaishimasu" (お会計お願いします, Check, please). If you say this, they'll have the bill at your table in no time. You'll either pay the bill at your table and the staff will bring you your change, or you bring the bill to the register to pay. Every izakaya is different. Another important thing to note when paying at izakaya is that most places will not allow you to split the bill. This is because it's not clear who ate what sometimes, and if there's a large group of people it can take a lot of time to pay. To avoid these problems, most izakaya require that groups pay together. Tokyo? Some of the most popular izakaya in Japan are oden, hot pot, and yakitori. Oden izakaya serve mainly oden, a type of a type of hot pot dish that often uses ingredients like chikuwa, konjac, daikon, eggs, etc. Hot pot izakaya serve mostly boiled dishes that you cook at your own pace while eating. Yakitori izakaya focus on grilled chicken skewers that the chef usually cooks over a charcoal grill over the counter. Thus, there are many izakaya that focus on a specific dish. Summary of Izakaya in Japan This was our introduction to Japan's izakaya culture. Be sure to reference it when you visit an izakaya in Japan. Besides standard izakaya, there are many different types that specialize in a specific menu item. Trying different izakaya and ordering all sorts of different foods and drinks is one of the best things about them. Izakaya can be found all across Japan and are best enjoyed with friends, but you can also enjoy them alone as well! You can also get the ¥500 deposit back if you return the IC card when you no longer need it (there will likely be a small fee deducted when returning the card). The Different Types of IC Cards Used in Japan 日本にほんで使つかわれているICカードの種類しゅるい Photo:suica(写真しゃしん:suica) There are many different IC cards used across Japan. Unfortunately, they cannot be used for continuous travel between different regions. Here is a list of the different IC cards and where the areas they can be purchased. IC cards can be used in different areas in Japan as well, although some may have limited uses. Another thing of note is that IC cards can be used for shopping at many places as well. Coolers, a Necessity for Summer Camping in Japan Summer in Japan is characterized by strong sunlight, high temperatures, and excessive humidity. Compared to spring and fall, which are quite pleasant, it's important to be careful of heat stroke and food poisoning during summer. Therefore, we'd like to introduce a video on coolers, a necessity for enjoying outdoor activities and camping during summer in Japan. Video Comparing Coolers This video, titled "My Recommended Coolers [Comparing 4 Types] (For Camping BBQ Outdoor Use) Coleman, Logos, Daiwa, and AO, Four Popular Brands" (おすすめクーラーボックス【4種比較】(キャンプ BBQ アウトドア用)コールマン・ロゴス・ダイワ・AOクーラー人気ブランドを一挙に紹介します!), was uploaded by "solo camp & camp cooking in Japan TANA channe." What Should You Look for When Buying a Cooler? Material? Cooling Ability? Style? Photo:A cooling bag Outdoor activities, such as BBQ and camping, are very popular in Japan as of late. Many people are in the process of planning outdoor leisure activities for the hot summer ahead. You might be one of them and are even considering buying a cooler. What are the most important things to consider when purchasing a cooler? Size, cooling ability, whether it's hard or soft, design... these are all important factors to think about. You should first decide on what it is that you want your cooler to accomplish. In this article, Tana, a solo camper in Japan, compares the usages, features, and storage capacity of four different coolers for campers having trouble choosing the right cooler. In addition, the cooling ability of three coolers of different sizes, designs, and materials are evaluated based on hourly temperatures and ice retention. This article is especially for those looking for a cooler for camping, festivals, picnics, etc., but aren't sure which one is best. We think this will help you choose the one that's right for you! AO Coolers 12L Canvas Soft Cooler Source :YouTube screenshot The first cooler on the list is the AO Coolers 12L Canvas Soft Cooler. As its name suggests it's a soft cooler. At first glance, the bag is so well designed that it doesn't look like a cooler. The outdoor pattern is quite stylish. The bag, which looks like a bucket, can be made into a square shape by buckling the clips on the sides. In this shape, it is almost as large as the DAIWA Cool Line 800 8L Cooler introduced next. The capacity is 11.35 L, and it can hold 12 350 ml cans plus 2.2 kg of ice. The video shows how different sized bottles fit in the cooler. [Video] 0:26 - Features of the AO Cooler DAIWA Cool Line 800 8L Cooler Source :YouTube screenshot The DAIWA Cool Line 800 8L Cooler comes from a fishing equipment manufacturer. Check it out if you're looking for a compact cooler for solo camping, fishing, or other outdoor leisure activities. It comes with a carrying strap and can be carried over the shoulder. The compartment is large enough to just barely hold a 1.5-liter bottle. It's a great cooler if you're only planning on bringing a few items. [Video] 6:10 - Daiwa Cooler Features LOGOS Hyper Subzero Cooler M 12L Source :YouTube screenshot The LOGOS Hyper Subzero Cooler M 12L is another soft cooler. This cooler has a cool silver design and can hold a 2L plastic bottle horizontally. The long sides are made of a hard material, so it can't be broken down into a smaller size, but it is designed to be thinner. It can be used for a variety of activities, including camping and festivals, making it quite attractive. Because of its stylish appearance, this product is also recommended for those who are particular about the appearance of their camping equipment. [Video] 8:04 - Features of the LOGOS Cooler Coleman Extreme Ice Cooler 25L Source :YouTube screenshot The Coleman Extreme Ice Cooler 25L is the largest cooler shown in the video, but it's a soft cooler and can be folded. It's a bit large for a solo camping cooler. Tana, the solo camper in the video, utilizes it to hold other items as well. The metal fittings on the side are plastic, so you need to be a little careful when carrying heavy items inside it. [Video] 9:06 - Features of the Coleman Cooler Comparing Cooling Ability - AO, Daiwa, and Coleman The cooling ability of coolers is important when camping in the summer. But do size and shape determine a cooler's cooling ability? Check out the video for a comparison of the cooling ability of different coolers from AO, Daiwa, and Coleman. The indoor temperature is 26.6 degrees Celsius, and one bag of ice is put in each cooler to test the temperature and ice retention over time. ・After approx. 1 hour Coleman: 14.5°C, 20% of ice melted AO: 9.4°C, 10% of ice melted Daiwa: 13.6°C, 15% of ice melted At this point, we can say that the ice retention is AO > Daiwa > Coleman. ・After approx. 4 hrs. Coleman: 13.5°C, 40% of ice melted AO: 14.9°C, 20% of ice melted Daiwa: 15.7°C, 30% of ice melted At this point, the ice retention is still the same - AO > Daiwa > Coleman. ・After approx. 6 hours Coleman: 13.5°C, 80% of ice melted AO: 14.1°C, 70% of ice melted Daiwa: 15.4°C, 70% of ice melted At this point, AO and Daiwa are about equal. ・After approx. 8 hours Coleman: 19.3°C, 90% of ice melted AO: 14.2°C, 80% of ice melted Daiwa: 13.9°C, 80% of ice melted After more than 8 hours, the Daiwa cooler maintained the coolest temperatures. [Video] 10:16 - Comparing three different coolers [Video] 17:11 - Results after 4 hours [Video] 22:09 - Results after 8 hours The Coleman is the largest of these coolers, so it's not possible to make a blanket judgment, but as an example, this test may be useful for those considering replacing or buying a new cooler in the future. Tips for Keeping Your Cooler Cool Photo:A cooler Here are some tips for keeping your cooler cool that aren't related to the characteristics of the cooler. ・Make sure that the items to be placed in the cooler are cooled in advance. If possible, cool the inside of the cooler box as well. ・Place refrigerants on the top and bottom of the cooler. ・Use a combination of large and small ice cubes. ・Don't drain the water after the ice has melted. ・Minimize opening and closing of the cooler. ・Avoid hot ground and place in a cool place out of direct sunlight, such as in the shade. Find the Cooler That Works Best for You and Enjoy Your Time Camping! Coolers are useful outdoor equipment for storing food for camping and BBQs and drinks for picnics. In summer, use coolers to prevent heat stroke and food poisoning, but be careful when handling drinks and food. There are many beautiful campgrounds in Japan. To enjoy the summer outdoors to the fullest, choose a cooler that suits your individual style and that will keep your food and other items cold. -

The main ingredient used to make dragon beard's candy is maltose syrup, known as "mugi mizuame" in Japanese. Cornstarch is also an essential ingredient. It's made by stretching a hard piece of candy over and over again to create a candy with a light and crunchy texture. The mildly sweet Dragon's beard candy is often given as a gift (lucky charm) in Seoul, Korea. Watch the Amazing Skills of This Professional Dragon Beard's Candy Maker in Shin-Okubo! Source :YouTube screenshot Each piece of dragon's beard candy is carefully handmade by craftsmen. As can be seen in the video, the street vendor first prepares the maltose syrup candy. He creates a hole in the hard candy and proceeds to stretch the candy using this hole. You can take a look at the stretching process throughout the video. The vendor then stretches the candy over and over while continually covering it in cornstarch until the threads of the candy reach the thickness of what is thought to resemble a dragon's beard. Only highly skilled professionals can make the candy incredibly thin without it breaking or snapping. A single piece of candy is stretched into an amazing 16,384 strands. From 4:26 in the video, the street vendor explains that this is the perfect number of strands to create the most pleasant melt-in-your-mouth texture. At 2:20 in the video, he begins to fold the candy to create the 16,384 strands, which he completes in roughly 35-40 seconds. The highlight of the video has to be when the professional dragon's beard maker shows off the finished product to the customers, at which point it looks beautifully smooth like threads of silk. Many customers are amazed by the look of the finished product! You can take a look at this in the video at 4:18. If you get a chance to see it up close, be sure to take a video of your own and share it with your friends!
