A Wedge Plow at the Aizu Railway's Yunokami Onsen Station: Video Introduction This video, titled "Wedge Plow Operation in Heavy Snow! Yunokami Onsen Station on the Aizu Railway" (大雪でラッセル車稼働!会津鉄道の湯野上温泉駅), was uploaded by "YAMAnoHAMA." This video was taken at Yunokami Onsen Station on the Aizu Railway on February 15, 2015, when it snowed heavily. The wedge plows seen in the heavy snowfall areas of Japan's Tohoku region are vehicles for snow removal. It's possible you've seen them as model trains, in picture books, in toy train sets as a kid, etc. Check out the video to see how the wedge plow works in heavy snowfall areas. A Wedge Plow in Action at Yunokami Onsen Station on the Aizu Railway Source :YouTube screenshot In the video, after the Aizu Mount Express rapid train arrives at Yunokami Onsen Station, a wedge plow slowly enters the station from the other side, pushing through the snow. People who seem to be tourists are taking pictures of the wedge plow, as it's an uncommon sight. Outside of Japan's most snowy regions it's unlikely that you'll ever see one. Many people are surprised when they first see the wedge plows, as they can be smaller than you'd expect. [Video] 0:05 - The Aizu Mount Express Rapid Train Arriving [Video] 0:47 - Wedge Plow Snow Removal Wedge Plows and Their History in Japan Photo:A DE15 Wedge Plow on the Soya Main Line A wedge plow, called a "Russel-sha" (ラッセル車, Russel Car) in Japanese, is a wedge plow developed by the Russell Company in the United States. The plows have a snow removal plate (blade) at the front of the vehicle and can remove snow on both sides in the direction of travel. It's similar to a bulldozer, but for snow. In the mid-Meiji period, the Japanese government purchased a Yuki type-1 snowplow (single track, wedge plow) in Hokkaido. At that time, the vehicle was an all-wood car with a tandem axle bogie. In the Showa period, the structure was improved, and wedge plows functionality evolved. Vehicles such as the new DD13 and DD15 diesel locomotives began to be manufactured and operated in large numbers across Japan. In recent years, high-performance railroad speeders have appeared and efficiency is improving. In addition, there are various types for different applications, such as a type with a wedge plow and a rotary device, and a type with a rotary head attached to a wide wing. More About the Aizu Railway in Fukushima, Japan Photo:The Fifth Okawa Bridge, Aizu Railway in Shimogo, Fukushima The Aizu Railway is a local line that runs from Aizukogen Ozeguchi Station in Fukushima Prefecture to Nishi-Wakamatsu Station. The line is 57.4 km long, and you can enjoy rich views of nature and rural scenery from the train windows. Another feature is that you can travel to tourist attractions such as Nikko, Tochigi and Asakusa, Tokyo without changing trains, thanks to mutual access with Yagan Railway and Tobu Railway. The Aizu Railway has many unique stations. There's Yunokami Onsen Station, which has a thatched-roofed station building, and Ashinomaki Onsen Station, which gained popularity for its station master who happens to be a cat and was featured in numerous media. Yunokami Onsen Station, which appears in the video, is the closest station to Ouchi-juku, one of Aizu's most popular tourist attractions, and is therefore visited by many tourists. Also recommended is the Oza Toro Tembo, a sightseeing train where passengers can enjoy the beautiful scenery of Minami-Aizu. It's a two-car train with tatami mat seating where passengers can relax with sunken kotatsu seating, trolley seats where you can enjoy the scenery, and observation seats. There are no windows in the trolley seats, so you can enjoy the train while feeling the pleasant breeze in spring and autumn. Summary – The Wedge Plows of the Aizu Railway This time we introduced wedge plows running along the Aizu Railway in Fukushima, Japan. Wedge plows are a rare sight, even for those that live in Japan, so if you get the chance to see one, definitely take some photos. Nure-sempei (wet rice crackers) revived the management of Choshi Railway, which runs in Choshi City, Chiba Prefecture! The company overcame a management crisis with a unique idea that transcended the boundaries of a railroad company!

Video introduction of Katsunori Takemoto, president of Choshi Railway, which protects Choshi City, Chiba Prefecture, Japan. The video "Local Line Protected by Creativity: The Struggle of the President of Choshi Dentetsu" (発想力で守るローカル線 銚子電鉄社長の奮闘) was uploaded by "Nikkei." The Choshi Electric Railway, which is only 6.4 kilometers long, runs on the east side of the Kanto region and is famous for its unique events, such as the "Ghost Train" and its moist rice crackers. President Katsunori Takemoto, a former tax accountant, utilized his ingenuity to protect the Choshi Railway, which serves as the main form of transportation in the area. What is the Choshi Railway? Photo:Choshi Railway・Tokawa Station Choshi Railway (Choshi Dentetsu), Choden for short, is a train that connects Choshi Station and Tokawa Station in Chiba. The entire line is in Choshi City, and it passes through the easternmost part of the city, near Cape Inubō (犬吠埼, Inubōsaki). Including its predecessor, Choshi Yuran Railway, the railway has a history of more than 100 years. The trains were acquired from major private railroads, and some of them are more than 50 years old. The railway has been in danger of being abandoned many times due to poor performance. Although it is difficult to run the train due to the decreasing population, the management is partly supported by the sale of snacks such as "mazui bo" and wet rice crackers. These wet crackers have generated more than twice the profit of the Choshi Railway, and President Katsunori Takemoto says "the Choshi Railway is a cracker shop" at an interview at 0:56 in the video. You can see crackers being baked at 1:09 in the video. The Brilliant Idea of President Takemoto Katsunori Source :YouTube screenshot President Katsunori Takemoto became the electric railway's tax advisor while also performing conductor duties. His innovations, such as naming rights for event trains and stations, were also successful. The selling of naming rights wasn’t limited to short sighted planning either; it was also to attract companies that were committed to rebuilding the Choshi Railway's management and contributing to the community as owners. Examples include "Never Give Up" Choshi Station (絶対にあきらめない銚子駅), "Roswell" Kimigahama Station (ロズウェル君ヶ浜駅) and "Thank you" Tokawa Station (ありがとう外川駅). In this way, the Choshi Railway has been contributing to society and the region as a hub of the local economy. In recent years, they have released various characters under the anthropomorphic railcar project "Loco MOTION," and a superhero named "Chodenjin Go Gusher" was also created. The Rice Crackers That Saved Choshi Railway Source :YouTube screenshot In 1989, the Choshi Railway was threatened with closure due to a decline in population. In 1998, they started selling moist rice crackers, surpassing earnings from the railway's main business. This was picked up by many media outlets and was the talk of the town at the time. Unfortunately, in 2004, the company took on the debt of the president at that time and began to decline once again. However, rice crackers came to the rescue once again, pulling the railway out of a crisis. The online sales of rice crackers, which were not doing well at the moment, were replaced with crackers that said "Please buy me, I have to earn money to repair the trains." Fans responded to the cry for help, and the railway was able to dodge yet another bullet. Incidentally, the rice crackers, popular survival masks, scarves, and other original Choshi Dentetsu goods are also available by mail order, so please visit the online shop on their website if you're interested. Summary of Choshi Dentetsu's Rice Crackers Photo:Choshi Railway Did you enjoy reading about the innovation of Choshi Dentetsu and their rice crackers? Taking a ride on the quaint railway may make you feel like you're on a sightseeing trip to a far-away land. A movie depicting the history of the Choshi Railway was released in winter 2019 as well. The Sagano Romantic Train Running Between Sagano, Kyoto and Kameoka This video, titled "Sagano Romantic Train [4K] Feel the Pale Pink of Spring on the Sagano Romantic Train" (嵯峨野観光鉄道【4K】薄桃色の春を散らしながら走るトロッコ列車), was created by "eo official." It introduces the Sagano Romantic Train that runs through the beautiful cherry blossom of Hozukyo, Kyoto. The Sagano Romantic Train is a small, simple, red and black sightseeing train that runs at a speed of about 25 km/h. Because it moves slow, you can enjoy the seasonal views along the Hozu River (保津川, Hozugawa) making it one of the most popular tourist spots in Kyoto. In this article, we'll introduce the history of the Sagano Romantic Train, as well as tourist information, alongside the video. Before reading on, we recommend taking a look at the beautiful, windowless, open carriage Sagano Romantic Train "Sagano Rich" that runs through Hozukyo Gorge in spring. What is the Sagano Romantic Train? Photo:The Sagano Romantic Train, Arashiyama, Kyoto The Sagano Romantic Train was opened in 1991 after the JR Sanin Line, which was no longer in use, was converted to a double track. Since then, it has been a popular sightseeing train in Kyoto, where you can enjoy the magnificent views of the Hozu River valley in all four seasons, including cherry blossoms, fresh greenery, autumn leaves, and winter scenery, as well as the unusual rocks of the Hozu River, such as Magoroku Rock, Lion Rock and Frog Rock. Sagano Romantic Train "Sagano Rich," an open carriage with no windows, is especially popular because the seats are made of wooden chairs, and you can enjoy the nostalgic atmosphere of the train car and the surrounding scenery while feeling the breeze. You can see the inside of the train at 1:00 in the video. Recommended sightseeing course of Sagano Torokko train Photo:Togetsukyo Bridge, Arashiyama, Kyoto The Sagano Romantic Train runs from Saga Torokko Station to Kameoka Torokko Station, with Hozukyo Torokko Station and Arashiyama Torokko Station along the way. JR Sugano Station and Saga Torokko Station are next to one other, so we recommend getting on a train to Kameoka Torokko Station and going back on the Hozu River boat ride and enjoying the beautiful scenery of the Oi River, Togetsukyo Bridge, and Arashiyama. The standard fare for the Sagano Romantic Train is ¥630 for adults, regardless of route. The trains are closed during the winter season from December 30 to the end of February and on Wednesdays. You can book a ticket online, at stations, and at travel agencies. Reservations can be checked online, and same-day tickets are also available. For the latest information and timetables, please check the official website. A railway diorama and steam locomotive D51 are exhibited at SL square at Saga Torokko Station. In addition, original goods of the trains, etc. are sold at the station shop. These make the perfect souvenirs. What is the best time to see and see cherry blossoms in Hozukyo from Sagano Torokko train? "There are about 700 cherry blossoms along the Sagano Torokko train line, and you can enjoy fireworks for about 25 minutes along with the view of Hozugawa River from the train." I recommend Sakura Tunnel from the first car, and you can also feel like a driver.Especially, you must see the Sakura Tunnel in front of Torokko Kameoka Station. The best time to see cherry blossoms in Hozukyo from the Sagano Torokko train is usually from late March to early April. It seems that it was in full bloom around March 25th in 2023. On the official website of Sagano Torokko train, there is also a "Sakura Map" with highlights written on it, and on SNS, there are announcements such as blooming conditions and special trains running through the illuminated Sakura Tunnel." The 0 Series Shinkansen Returns as the World’s Slowest Bullet Train/Railway Hobby Train! The video "[Railway Hobby Train] Debut|Ehime Newspaper," (「鉄道ホビートレイン」デビュー・愛媛新聞), released by "ehimenp," is about the 0 series Shinkansen (The world’s slowest bullet train) running on the JR Shikoku Yodo Line, which stops at Uwajima station and Chikanaga station. This line runs along the Shimanto River. The Shinkansen is Japan's high-speed railway, celebrating its 50th anniversary. The first Shinkansen train to celebrate this anniversary is the 0 series, a car with a cute round nose that everyone has seen at one time or another. The 0 series Shinkansen can be seen at 1:10 in the video. Although the 0 series Shinkansen was retired in 2008, a diesel train car was converted to a 0 series Shinkansen-style train in 2014 to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Yodo Line, which runs from Kochi Prefecture to Ehime Prefecture in the Shikoku region. That happens to be the "Railway Hobby Train" introduced in the video. The nicknames of the 0 series shinkansen are Hikari and Kodama. At the time, it attracted a lot of attention in Japan and around the world as a high-speed train that ran at the world's highest speed of 210km/h. Of course, the Railway Hobby Train is a sightseeing train, and since it is a slow-moving diesel train, it cannot achieve such high speeds, but you can enjoy a scenic tour of Shikoku while being gently rocked by the lovely dumpling-nosed cars of the nostalgic 0 series Shinkansen, which look just like the original. The cute Railway Hobby Train can be seen at 0:55 in the video. The Charm of the 0 Series Shinkansen Photo:Railway Hobby Train The Railway Hobby Train is a set of three cars that run on the Yodo Line. In addition to the 0 series Shinkansen train introduced in the video, there is the Shiman Trolley, which can be seen from 6:04 and the Kaiyodo Hobby Train, which can be seen at 6:09. Together with these trains, the three brothers of the Yodo Line are the centerpiece of the regional development. The 0 series Shinkansen was also featured in the popular children's anime "Shinkansen Transforming Robot Shinkarion," so the 0 series Shinkansen is not only for old fans, but a dream come true for children as well. We recommend checking the operation status of the train on the official JR Shikoku website in advance, as it is expected to be very crowded on the days when the train is running. Summary of the Railway Hobby Train Source :YouTube screenshot There is a museum called Shikoku Railway Cultural Center in Saijo City, Ehime Prefecture. Here, there are 0 series train cars, that actually were once active as shinkansen, on display. In other words, Shikoku is a holy land for railway enthusiasts. ICカードは、切符きっぷを買かったり料金りょうきんを計算けいさんしたりする時間じかんをなくして、時間じかんの節約せつやくになりますので、ぜひ使つかってみてください。 You can also get the ¥500 deposit back if you return the IC card when you no longer need it (there will likely be a small fee deducted when returning the card). また、ICカードが不要ふようになったら返却へんきゃくすれば、500円ごひゃくえんのデポジットを返かえしてもらえます(返却へんきゃくの時ときにちょっとした手数料てすうりょうがかかることがあります)。 The Different Types of IC Cards Used in Japan 日本にほんで使つかわれているICカードの種類しゅるい Photo:suica(写真しゃしん:suica) There are many different IC cards used across Japan. 日本全国にっぽんぜんこくで使つかわれているICカードは様々さまざまな種類しゅるいがあります。 Unfortunately, they cannot be used for continuous travel between different regions. しかし、残念ざんねんながら、各かくエリア間かんをまたがってご利用りよういただくことはできません。 Here is a list of the different IC cards and where the areas they can be purchased. ここでは、ICカードの種類しゅるいと買かえる地域ちいきを紹介しょうかいします。 IC cards can be used in different areas in Japan as well, although some may have limited uses. Another thing of note is that IC cards can be used for shopping at many places as well. No Talking on the Phone 1. 通話つうわは禁止きんし Talking on the other phone is definitely something to avoid, as it can be noisy and can cause trouble for other passengers. 通話つうわはうるさくて、他たの乗客じょうきゃくに迷惑めいわくをかけてしまいますので、絶対ぜったいにやめましょう。 It's also good manners to keep your phone on silent or some setting with which it won't ring. また、携帯電話けいたいでんわはマナーモードなど、音おとが鳴ならない設定せっていにするのがマナーです。 2. Talk Quietly When Riding the Train 2. 電車でんしゃに乗のるときは静しずかに話はなす Talking loudly with friends can be tempting when you're having fun, but it's important to be mindful of others. 友達ともだちと遊あそんでいるときは、大おおきな声こえで話はなしていても気きづかないかもしれませんが、他たの人ひとを気きづかうことが大切たいせつです。 It's also good manners to avoid listening to loud music. また、音楽おんがくを静しずかに聴きくのもマナーです。 3. Don't Eat When Riding the Train 3. 電車でんしゃで食たべてはいけない Eating on the train should always be avoided unless you're riding a shinkansen or in a green car, as these generally have tables and cup holders for eating and drinking. 新幹線しんかんせんやグリーン車しゃでは、よくテーブルやカップホルダーがありますので食たべても大丈夫だいじょうぶですが、それ以外いがいの電車でんしゃでの食事しょくじはマナー違反いはんです。 4. Be Careful of Priority Seating 4. 優先席ゆうせんせきに注意ちゅうい Trains in Japan have priority seating that is to be used be by senior citizens, people with disabilities, people with injuries, pregnant women, and people with children. 日本にほんの電車でんしゃには、高齢者こうれいしゃ、障害者しょうがいしゃ、傷病しょうびょう者しゃ、妊婦にんぷ、乳幼児にゅうようじがいる人ひとの優先ゆうせん座席ざせきがあります。 Be careful not to sit in them if you don't fit into any of the above categories. 上記じょうきに当あてはまらない人ひとは、座すわらないように気きをつけましょう。 5.
