Kamagaya Daibutsu
The Kamagaya Daibutsu is a bronze seated statue of Shakyamuni Buddha, created in 1776 by Bun'emon Okuniya (Fukuda) in Kamagaya-juku for the purpose of ancestor worship, commissioned from the metalworker Takagawa Shūzen in Kanda, Edo.
During the opening ceremony of the Buddha's eyes, the road from his home to the Daibutsu, about three towns (approximately 327 meters), was covered with Ryukyu fabric, and more than fifty monks were invited to perform a ceremonial procession accompanied by music. It is said that the food served at that time was extravagant, prepared for 300 people by a high-end restaurant in Edo, with gold and silver decorations on the second course, and local folk songs of the time sang, "Silver in the bowl, gold in the dish, and for the grand finale, golden coins on the plate."
The Kamagaya Daibutsu was located along the Kioroshi Kaidō, connecting Edo to Chōshi, making it a landmark for travelers. In the illustrations of the "Kisoji Meisho Zue" depicting famous places along the Tokaido Road, the Kamagaya Daibutsu is shown alongside people traveling the road, with horses running in the grasslands. The Daibutsu at the entrance of Kamagaya-juku was likely well-known among the people of Edo.
The Kamagaya Daibutsu has been cherished by the local community, surviving the anti-Buddhist movements of the Meiji Era and metal requisitions during the Asia-Pacific War. Today, it is loved by the local people across generations, becoming a station name and inspiring products that bear its name.

The former Satsuma Village chief's house – Shibuya Family Residence, a nationally registered tangible cultural property –
Located in Nakazatsuma 1-chome, Kamagaya City, the Shibuya Family Residence is the birthplace of Shibuya Sōji, an important figure of the Akahōtai during the late Edo period. The Shibuya family has served as village chiefs for generations since the mid-Edo period, and their residence is a grand building befitting of a chief.
The main house, built exactly 200 years ago in 1826 (Bunsei 9), is the oldest existing building in the city. Its large floor plan and tall roof make it a standout in the Satsuma District.
The roof features thatched roofing covered with iron plates shaped like tiles, and upon entering and looking up at the ceiling, one can still see the thatch from the Edo period.
A notable feature of the Shibuya Family Residence is that the main layout has remained unchanged since its construction.
The entrance hall for welcoming guests, along with the inner rooms known as Nakano-ma and Oku-no-ma, have hardly been altered and retain their original appearance.
The Tokonoma (alcove), display shelves, and attached writing alcove in Oku-no-ma have also not been remodeled, creating a space of high formality. The sturdy pillars, beams, and the kamidana (household shrine) in the living room still reflect the original construction, showcasing the traditional farmhouse layout that has continued since the Edo period.
The Shibuya family possesses a "house layout diagram" drawn in 1848 (Kaei 1).
This valuable document not only depicts the layout of the house but also includes images of the storehouse, shed, and household deity, conveying the conditions of the late Edo period. The fact that both the building and the diagram have been preserved together is extremely valuable.
Comparing the diagram with the current state reveals that the land divisions are accurately depicted, and the layout of the buildings remarkably matches the current floor plan.
The building has remained largely unchanged since its construction and has been continuously inhabited, evidencing the Shibuya family's dedication to preserving this home.
Furthermore, it retains the traditional landscape of a settlement built along the base of a plateau facing the highway. The depiction of the plateau in the diagram reflects the original scenery of the Satsuma settlement that still exists today.
Over the years, the Shibuya Family Residence has suffered some damage. Future plans include preservation and repair work, seismic reinforcement, and renovations for community use, aiming to develop it into a place of relaxation for the region.

National Historic Site Shimousa Kogane Nakano Ranch Ruins (Tokkome)
---
The Shimousa Kogane Nakano Ranch Ruins are one of the pastures the Tokugawa shogunate established in the Edo period to secure a steady supply of military horses. In the northwest of Chiba Prefecture stood Kogane Pasture, to the north Sakura Pasture, and to the south Mineoka Bokujo. Each pasture was further divided; Kogane Pasture comprised five ranches: Ueno-maki, Nakano-maki, Shimonomaki, Takadadai Pasture, and Inzai Pasture.
Horses inside the ranches were allowed to roam freely and lived almost as wild animals, so they were called wild horses. Once a year, these wild horses were rounded up, captured, and sorted in an event called a noma-tori. The best horses were offered to the shogunate. The facility used for this roundup is called a tokkome, and one still survives in Higashinakazawa 2-chome, Kamagaya City. The tokkome consisted of three enclosures: the capture enclosure (tokkome) for driving and catching the wild horses, the holding enclosure (tamekome) for keeping three-year-old horses, and the release enclosure (haraikome) for returning horses other than three-year-olds to the pasture. The release enclosure remains largely in its original form.
As the surrounding area urbanized, this site proved a valuable ruin for understanding the shogunate’s production of military horses. In February 2007 it became the first pasture site in the country to be designated a National Historic Site.
To promote the name tokkome to a wider audience, the annual Spring Maki Horse Festival is held from April through June. The first event, the Tokkome Cherry Blossom Festival, takes place on Saturday, April 4, during the cherry blossom season at Kaigara-yama Park. On that day we offer guided on-site tours of the tokkome, which are not usually open to the public, along with a small exhibition about the ranch. You can also enjoy pony rides, a stamp rally, a quiz rally, food stalls, and many other booths. Please come and join us. We look forward to welcoming many visitors.
