How to Use Onsen: Video Introduction 温泉おんせんの入はいり方かたの動画どうが紹介しょうかい This video, titled "Japanese ONSEN Manners" (日本にほんの温泉おんせんマナー Japanese ONSEN Manners), was uploaded by "LetsJapanCh." It introduces how to use onsen in Japan. What Are Japan's Onsen? Sen (Spring)) in kanji, is the Japanese word for "hot spring." Japan is one of the world's leading hot spring countries, and there are around 28,000 onsen in Japan. It's not known exactly when Japan's onsen culture came to be, but records of onsen appear in historical texts, such as the Nihon Shoki (Chronicles of Japan), from Japan's Nara Period (710-794). Onsen Rules/Etiquette & How to Use Onsen in Japan Photo:Noren at a public bath(写真しゃしん:銭湯せんとうの暖簾のれんのイメージ) Because Japan's onsen culture dates back more than 1,000 years, there are many different rules, manners, and customs to observe when using them. Let's take a look at how to use onsen in Japan. As shown in the video, there are two entrances at an onsen- one for women and one for men. The entrances are marked by curtains called "Noren." The noren for the men's onsen generally have the kanji '男' (man), while the noren for the women's onsen have the kanji '女' (woman). If you're not used to Japan's onsen culture, this may come as a surprise, but before entering an onsen, one must get completely naked. This means no swimsuits, slippers, etc. One reason is that wearing swimsuits can dirty the water, but another reason is that the swimsuits will weaken the therapeutic effects of the onsen. [Video] 0:58 - What to Wear in a Japanese Onsen 【動画どうが】0:58~ 日本にほんの温泉おんせんでの服装ふくそうについて Before entering an onsen there are a few other things one must do. The first is to pour water over the body. This is to acclimate your body to the temperature of the onsen, and also to wash the body of dirt and cleanse it of impurities/evil spirits. [Video] 1:22 - Pouring Water Over Oneself Before Entering the Onsen 【動画どうが】1:22~ 温泉おんせんに入はいる前まえにかけ湯ゆ After cleansing your body, it's time for a shower. Unlike normal showers where you would shower standing up, it's proper manners to sit down when showering at an onsen. This is to prevent the water from splashing on others who may also be showering. Onsen are shared spaces, and so it's important to be mindful of others. [Video] 2:13 - Showering Before Entering the Onsen 【動画どうが】2:13~ 温泉おんせんに入はいる前まえにシャワー Many people may think it's common sense to not bring stools into the baths, but it's still a important. Actually, bringing any outside objects into the onsen is generally considered bad manners. Things like squirt guns, pool noodles, etc., are not allowed in onsen. [Video] 1:58 - Wiping Down Before Entering the Dressing Room 【動画どうが】3:40~ 体からだを拭ふいてから脱衣室だついしつに戻もどる Bathing in an onsen expends energy and the heat causes you to sweat, reducing the amount of water in the body. Because of this, it's important to relax for a while after bathing in the onsen, and grab some water or a sports drink to rehydrate. Many onsen in Japan provide yukata that guests can wear after bathing, and a lounge where they can relax. Can You Enter Onsen in Japan With Tattoos? One of the most frequently asked questions foreign travelers to Japan have when wanting to visit an onsen is whether or not it's okay to enter onsen with tattoos. Unfortunately, the answer to this is generally no. The reason for this is tattoos in Japan have long been associated with criminal organizations. In the past, criminals in Japan were even marked with a tattoo so that they could be easily identified. That being said, there are some onsen in Japan where you can enter with tattoos. Furthermore, there are places that allow you to enter as long as you cover up your tattoos. This can be done with special bandages and sprays sold in Japan. Unfortunately, some places won't let you enter even if you offer to cover up tattoos. In this case, there's not much you can do, and you're better off just finding a new place. It shouldn't be hard though with how many onsen there are in Japan. The Different Types of Onsen in Japan Photo:A bulletin board with health benefits written on it at Kinosaki Onsen(写真しゃしん:城崎温泉きのさきおんせん・効能こうのうが書かかれた掲示板けいじばん) Japan's onsen are said to be good for one's health, but there are many different types of onsen in Japan, and they all have slightly different health benefits. Below we'll introduce some of the different types of onsen in Japan. Standard, transparent hot springs with a small amount of minerals. Hot springs that contain salt and are good for muscle and joint pain. Hot springs that contain sulfates. YouTube The Best Time to Visit Onsen in Japan Photo:Winter at Nyuto Onsen's Tsuru no Yu(写真しゃしん:乳頭温泉郷にゅうとうおんせん・冬ふゆの鶴つるの湯温泉ゆおんせん) When it comes to the best season/time of year to visit onsen, this can vary depending on your personal preferences. That being said, here are some things to consider for each season. During spring, the weather is fair, making it easy to relax in onsen. Depending on where you are, you may even be able to enjoy cherry blossoms while bathing. Summer in Japan is quite hot, so it might seem strange to want to bathe in hot water, but there are some reasons for visiting hot spring during the summer. One would be that many of Japan's hot springs are located deep in mountainous areas and are difficult to reach during winter. Summer is the best time to visit any hidden gems you want to go to. Autumn, similar to spring, has mild weather and is great for enjoying outdoor springs. Furthermore, autumn is one of the most beautiful seasons in Japan and there are many places in Japan that are famous for their autumn foliage. Bathing in Japan's relaxing hot springs while enjoying the autumn leaves is a great way to kill two birds with one stone. Winter in Japan can be quite cold, especially northern Japan. Onsen are a great way to warm up during the harsh winter months. Depending on where you go, you can also enjoy beautiful snowy landscapes around the onsen. How Much Do Onsen in Japan Cost to Use? Japan's onsen are relatively cheap to use. Most onsen cost only a couple hundred yen (a few bucks). If you're on a budget and looking to save money while still enjoying some of the authentic culture of Japan, onsen are a great experience. If you're visiting a hot spring town in Japan and planning to stay the night to enjoy sightseeing around the area, then you're going to have to book some accommodations as well. With that in mind, rather than staying at a hotel, we recommend staying at a ryokan. A ryokan is a traditional Japanese inn that serves traditional Japanese-style meals, generally has traditional Japanese rooms (tatami mats, sliding doors, etc.), and allows guests to relax in yukata, traditional Japanese clothing. This allows visitors to really experience Japanese culture and for roughly the same price as a hotel. Onsen ryokan are traditional Japanese inns with a focus on hot springs, and can be found in many hot spring resorts in Japan. Summary of How to Use Onsen in Japan There are many different rules and manners to observe when enjoying onsen in Japan, but even if you make a mistake, as long as you're careful there's nothing to worry about. Whether you're going to a famous hot spring resort or an onsen hidden in the mountains of Japan, you're sure to find some relaxing hot springs, regardless of the season. Just remember, if you have tattoos, it's best to do some research and find which hot springs you can enter to avoid any troubles during your trip. h2 ruby { font-weight: bold; } .mod-article-caption .caption-heading { font-size: 2.4rem !important; } .caption-text { font-size: 2rem !important; } -

Glasswort, the Bright Red Plant Covering Lake Saroma in Hokkaido This video, titled " JG 4K Hokkaido|Glasswort Around Lake Saroma|Hokkaido Sea Asparagus" (JG 4K 北海道 サロマ湖周辺のアッケシソウ(サンゴソウ) Hokkaido Sea Asparagus), was uploaded by " JAPAN GEOGRAPHIC." Hokkaido is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Japan, attracting many foreign tourists every year thanks to its natural beauty. "In this 4K video, you can see the rare carpet of sea asparagus at Lake Saroma in Hokkaido, which is known as "Japan's best red carpet." Glasswort is a saltwater plant that grows in salt marshes that are subject to the ebb and flow of the tides. It is a salt-tolerant, edible plant that grows into a cylindrical shape 10 to 35 cm tall. As glasswort, an annual plant, grows, its flesh stores a large amount of salt, giving it a firm texture and salty taste. The leaves and stems are edible, and it is called sea asparagus because of its resemblance to asparagus, and is used in cooking in parts of Europe. Lake Saroma is the largest brackish lake in Japan and faces the sea, making it ideal the ideal environment for sea asparagus to grow. The Sea Asparagus at Lake Saroma in Hokkaido Photo:Sea asparagus Salicornia Europaea, this variety of sea asparagus, has been registered as an endangered species. Lake Noto in Abashiri, Hokkaido, is home to one of the largest colonies of sea asparagus in Japan, which is artificially cultivated with a tractor to suppress the growth of other halophytes (salt-tolerant plants). Lake Saroma, shown in the video, is one of the few areas where sea asparagus is cultivated. In Japanese the plant is often called "Sango-so" (サンゴ草: lit. "Coral grass") because its tips are red and resemble coral. You can see a close-up shot of the coral-like glasswort at 3:13 in the video. Tasting the Sea Asparagus Grown in Hokkaido's Lake Saroma Photo:Sea asparagus Sea asparagus is a plant that tastes salty when eaten raw, so it is commonly boiled and eaten as is. It is also delicious when added to pasta, stews, and other boiled dishes. In recent years, it has been distributed in supermarkets across Japan, so be sure to try it if you have the chance. It is rich in minerals and amino acids such as magnesium, which Japanese people tend to deficient in, and the extract of sea asparagus is so nutritious that it is used as an ingredient in many supplements. Summary of Sea Asparagus at Lake Saroma in Hokkaido Source :YouTube screenshot Lake Saroma in Hokkaido is part of the Abashiri Quasi-National Park, and is famous as an area that cranes fly over every year in early September when the autumn leaves begin to change color. You can see one of these cranes at 3:17 in the video. Sango-so Matsuri (能取湖さんご草祭り) a sea asparagus festival at Lake Saroma is held from early to mid-September, and a sightseeing bus called "Dollymint Okhotsk-go" (ドリーミントオホーツク号) operates there. As it is not a place with convenient access, many tourists visit by rental car, so be sure to research details on parking and other events in the area. 【TripAdvisor】Lake Saroma https://www.tripadvisor.com/Attraction_Review-g1120894-d1384194-Reviews-Lake_Saroma-Saroma_cho_Tokoro_gun_Hokkaido.html -

Fujiya Ryokan" in Yugawara, Ashigarakami-gun, Kanagawa Prefecture is a famous inn that you should visit at least once. How about a classical yet modern long-established onsen ryokan for a weekend stay?

Video Introduction of "Fujiya Ryokan" in Yugawara, Ashigarakami-gun, Kanagawa Prefecture This video, titled " Fujiya Ryokan [Selected Lodgings to Visit on Weekends]" (富士屋旅館【週末に訪れたくなる厳選宿】), was uploaded by "Relux Lodging Diary" (Relux宿日記). Fujiya Ryokan, featured in the video, is a popular long-established hot spring inn located in Yugawara, Kanagawa, in Japan's Kanto region, near Hakone. The hot springs and scenic beauty of the area between Yugawara and Hakone have a long history that is mentioned in ancient texts, such as the Manyoshu. Fujiya Ryokan already had a predecessor building in the late Edo period (around 1750-1860 AD), and the oldest building today, the Old Building, was built in 1923. The oldest building, the "Old Building" (旧館, Kyuu-kan) was built in 1923, making it a building with nearly 100 years of history. The New Building, the Old Building, and Rakumiso, all of which have equally elegant guest rooms, are connected by a long corridor that leads to the large bathhouse, allowing visitors to enjoy a stroll through the Japanese garden before a relaxing bath. The Old Building, the (as its name implies) oldest building at the inn, provides guests with a stylish and tranquil space with a Taisho-modern taste of the time inherited through the use of fine 13.68-centimeter square pillars made of Japanese cypress and glass doors with kumiko panels. The New Building is a high-quality guest room that provides a conscious blend of Japanese and Western styles while maintaining the retro feel of the Showa period. The guest rooms can be viewed at 0:43 in the video. The History of Fujiya Ryokan in Yugawara, Kanagawa Source :YouTube screenshot According to "Guide to Yugawara" (湯河原案内, yugawara an'nai) published in 1918, Fujiya Ryokan started its business as a hot spring inn in 1920, and was called "Juhoen" at the time. After crossing the long bridge over the Fujiki River, you'll see a vast site lined with towers and annexes, and it is introduced as a famous ryokan where you can enjoy nature and flowers in every season. The large bath is a hot spring cypress bath with a weak saline solution (weak alkalinity), and is considered a beauty spring because its pH is close to that of human skin. You can see the large bath at 2:39 of the video. Of course, visitors can also enjoy the hot spring water in the indoor baths of their guest room. Fujiya Ryokan has been loved by many Japanese literary figures, including Doppo Kunikida, Natsume Soseki, Yosano Akiko, and Junichiro Tanizaki. Gourmet Dining at Fujiya Ryokan in Yugawara, Kanagawa Source :YouTube screenshot When you think of hot spring inns, besides the hot springs and luxurious rooms, if there's anything you don't want to miss out on, it's the delicious cuisine they serve. Fujiya Ryokan's restaurant, Hyorokutei, offers dishes that will make even the most seasoned gourmet's taste buds sing. The name "Hyorokutei" comes from the traditional good omen for good health - Gourds (Hyotan in Japanese). It combines the words "gourd" (Hyo)tan, six (roku), and "restaurant" (tei). (※Gourds have long been a good luck charm for good health in Japan) Savor the mouthwatering fish dishes made with a wide variety of Higashi-Izu seafood from Sagami Bay, as well as premium ingredients, such as Japanese black beef, locally harvested game dishes, and domestic eel. We also recommend the "dancing icefish," which you can see in the video at 2:18, served with ginger vinegar, a specialty of Yugawara. If you're too busy for an overnight stay, Fujiya Ryokan's one-day hot spring and gourmet plan is a great option. At Hyorokutei, even on a day trip, you can enjoy sumptuous kaiseki cuisine, shabu-shabu made with local sea bream, charcoal-grilled meat, and other delectable dishes. Summary of Fujiya Ryokan in Yugawara, Kanagawa Source :YouTube screenshot What did you think? Fujiya Ryokan, introduced in the video, has been chosen by foreign tourists as one of the best inns in Japan. Once you stay there, it's almost inevitable that you'll become a repeat guest! Enjoy hospitality and luxury that you can only find in Japan. -

"Higan Flowers") because they bloom around the time of Higan, a Buddhist holiday exclusively observed in Japan, but they are also called "manjushage," which in Sanskrit means "The flower that blooms in the heavens." Kikuchi Valley - One of the Most Beautiful Valleys in Kumamoto Photo:Aso-Kuju National Park Kikuchi Valley is known as a "forest of relaxation" stretching from Kikuchi to Aso in Kumamoto Prefecture. The Kikuchi Valley area is covered with primeval forests of firs and zelkova trees, and has been designated as a special recreation area in Aso-Kuju National Park. In addition, Kikuchi Valley is so rich in nature that it has been selected as one of the Top 100 Forests for Forest Bathing and the Top 100 Nature Spots in Kumamoto because of the natural environment. Therefore, visitors are required to pay a maintenance fee to preserve the environment. From Cherry Blossoms to Autumn Leaves – Seasonal Highlights of Kikuchi Valley Photo:Autumn leaves in Kikuchi Valley Kikuchi Valley is known as a summer resort and is a place to cool off naturally. One of the highlights of the valley is that it is comfortable even in the hot Japanese summer, and visitors can enjoy a pleasant stroll in the great outdoors. There are two walking courses: a 1-km round-trip "Healing Course" and a 2-km round-trip "Negative Ion Enjoyment Course." The courses allow visitors to naturally detox their minds while enjoying the surrounding scenery. In spring, visitors can enjoy cherry blossoms at the Kikuchi Valley Rest Plaza, in fall, the autumn leaves begin to change color around the end of October, and in winter, the misty ice flowers bloom. Kikuchi Valley, with its beautiful and spectacular scenery throughout Japan's four seasons, offers plenty to see! The photogenic scenery is popular among photographers, instagrammers, and young people alike. Mizunoeki Pleasure Park - An Exciting Park for Families You might be worried that small children won't be able to have fun in a place with so much nature. For families, we recommend Mizunoeki Pleasure Park, located near the Kikuchi River flowing from Kikuchi Valley. Here, visitors can enjoy a variety of athletic activities, including BMX, and bouldering, and even go fishing in the fishing pond. After playing at Mizunoeki Pleasure Park, don't forget to take in the beautiful nature of Kikuchi Valley. Summary of Kikuchi Valley in Kumamoto, Japan Did you watch the video of Kikuchi Valley in summer, with its beautiful scenery and the soothing sound of flowing water? Camping and barbecues are prohibited in Kikuchi Valley in order to preserve the natural environment. The Transparent Waters of Sunayama Beach on Miyakojima + Sightseeing Spots and Attractions on the Island in Okinawa

Aerial Footage of Sunayama Beach on Miyakojima: Video Introduction This video, titled "[Drone Aerial Photography] Sunayama Beach, Miyakojima|Healing Drone Okinawa" (【ドローン空撮】宮古島 砂山ビーチ Healing Drone Okinawa), was uploaded by "Umi Note." It introduces the beautiful blue skies, sandy white beach, and clear waters of Miyakojima. Highlights of Sunayama Beach – Spectacular Views at Every Turn! Photo:Sunayama Beach, Miyakojima, Okinawa Sunayama Beach is located approximately 4 km from the center of Hirara, a city in Miyakojima, Okinawa Prefecture, in Japan's Kyushu Region. Despite its easy accessibility, the beach is surrounded by unexplored nature and beautiful, clear waters. The video shows the spectacular views of Sunayama Beach from beginning to end. The drone offers a unique view that you wouldn't normally be able to see, and the beach seen from the ocean side is so beautiful that it will leave you speechless. [Video] 0:35 - View From the Beach As the name of the beach suggests (砂山, Sunayama; lit. "Sand Mountain"), it's located over a small sand hill. From the parking lot near Sunayama Beach, there is a narrow path leading uphill. It's a bit difficult to climb while carrying luggage, but the view after reaching the top makes it totally worth the effort. You can't help but stop to take in the view. The Rock Arch at Sunayama Beach – A Popular Instagram Spot! The rock arch is a popular spot at Sunayama Beach. You can see the blue ocean through the rock and take photogenic pictures as well. It's also known as a sunset spot, where you can even see the sunset over the ocean inside the rock arch. We recommend relaxing on the beach and watching the sun set inside the rock arch. Things to Be Careful of at Sunayama Beach Photo:Sunayama Beach, Miyakojima, Okinawa The fact that Sunayama Beach is mostly unspoiled by human hands, means that it's full of natural beauty, but this also means there are a few precautions you should take when visiting the beach. The rock arch is currently closed off due to the danger of falling rocks and collapse. Visitors are advised to only go close to the rocks to take pictures. You can also swim at Sunayama Beach, but the waves are surprisingly tall and accidents have been known to occur. Be careful when snorkeling in areas where the water is even a little deep. Swim rings and life jackets may be necessary. There are also signs warning of sharks. We recommend staying in the shallow areas at Sunayama Beach, as there are no lifeguards on duty. Stay away from the beach when there is a surf advisory in effect. It's important to remember that you're dealing with nature, so please keep this in mind while enjoying your time on the beach. Restrooms and shower rooms are located in the parking lot. Toilets should be used before heading to the beach. The path to the beach is hilly and a bit long, so flip-flops or comfortable walking shoes are recommended. If you're with children, be sure to hold their hands when walking. There are no beach houses or restaurants on Sunayama Beach, so be sure to bring your own food or have lunch in the area. We recommend Sunayama Cafe in front of the beach. How to Get to Sunayama Beach Photo:An aerial view of Sunayama Beach, Miyakojima, Okinawa Compared to the main island of Okinawa, Miyakojima is relatively small. By car, it takes only 20 minutes to reach the beach from Miyako Airport and 10 minutes to reach from Hirara Port. Free parking is available as well. The video shows an aerial view of the entirety Miyakojima. [Video] 3:20 - Miyakojima From the Sky If you don't have a car, you can also rent a bicycle.
