Uenohara Tourism Promotional Video This video is a promotional video on Uenohara, titled "Uenohara - It's Closer Than You Think! 男たちのアクティビティー編), produced by the Uenohara Tourism Board, in which the destination is explored by three young male travelers. Located on the extreme eastern edge of Yamanashi Prefecture, Uenohara has an estimated population of 23,160 (July 2019). It is also known as the location for the Teikyo University of Science. The video portrays the three young men enjoying the diverse tourist experiences in Uenohara while highlighting the beautiful natural environment. The natural beauty of Uenohara is sure to get you fired up for a journey into the wilderness. And why not go? It's only an hour from Tokyo. Uenohara Is a Great Place to Visit! Does Uenohara sound familiar to you? Probably not unfortunately... Too bad... because Uenohara is such a great destination! The three travelers in the video seem to be having a really great time in Uenohara. This article is to give more detailed information about the places in Uenohara that appear in the video, so be sure to follow along. Source :YouTube screenshot First up, we have Mt. Yaeyama which can be seen at 0:12 in the video. Mt. Yaeyama is easily accessible by car (15mins from Chu-o Ko-soku National Highway, Uenohara IC) and there are parking lots at the foot of the mountain. The recommended activity in Yaeyama is hiking. A 20-minute hiking trail leads to an observation deck where you can even see Mt. Fuji, when the weather is nice. Then they visit Fudo no Taki (a waterfall) from 0:44. Being showered with negative ions, you may get the chance to encounter wild animals. After being immersed in Mother Nature, the travelers go to have lunch at the local market, Yuzurihara Furusato Cho-jukan. "Cho-ju" means longevity in Japanese, and Yuzurihara is known as a village whose residents have a long lifespan. You can try their "healthy diets" in the restaurant that supports their longevity, with meals such as homemade Tofu, Miso, Yuba, etc. Liked Even by Hollywood Stars?! "Seida no Tamaji," a traditional local dish with small potatoes boiled in Miso, is introduced from 1:16. Uenohara's Mascot character "Tamaji-maru" represents this popular local dish. Source :YouTube screenshot Satisfied With Lunch? Time for a Swim! The travelers try fishing at local campground at 1:27 (The campsites in Japan are often more like a forest park offering outdoor activities). Surrounded by vast landscapes, Uenohara features many campsites. Catching and cooking fresh trout on the grill is a great way to spend the day and enjoy the fruits of your labor. After a good time fishing, they head to "Nagai Saka Manju store" from 1:57, which sells a famous speciality of Uenohara- Saka Manju (Manju is a bun filled with sweet bean paste). Saka Manju, although pronounced Saka, actually comes from the word "Sake" a type of Japanese alcohol. It is a type of Manju where "Koji" is used to produce fermentation in the dough, which gives it a unique taste and smell. There are a variety of flavor filled options you can choose from, such as miso, salt, or takana (pickled mustard leaf). After getting their fill of outdoor activities, the travelers bathe in the hot springs to relieve the wearies of their travels. The sauna at the day visit spa, Akiyama Onsen, appearing from 2:17, is a steam sauna where you can work up a nice sweat. It also has a swimming pool to cool down afterwards. The quality of the hot spring is high carbon dioxide gas alkaline. Akiyama Onsen is easily accessible from the JR Uenohara Station. A pickup shuttle bus is also available. You can stay overnight in Akiyama Onsen as well, as there are plenty of hotels in the area. It's time to wrap up the trip -- The three travelers enjoy taking a nice open-air bath. Photo:People with smartphones(写真しゃしん:スマホを持もつ人ひとたち) Now that we've gone over the 3 main ways to get Wi-Fi in Japan, let's talk about how you choose what's best for you. There are a number of things to keep in mind when choosing what kind of Wi-Fi to use: Wi-Fiわぃふぁいを選えらぶときには、いくつかの注意点ちゅういてんがあります。 [SIM Unlocked] 【SIMフリー】 If you're thinking about getting a SIM card, the first thing to do is make sure that your phone is SIM unlocked. If you purchase a SIM card without doing this, you run the risk of paying for something you can't use. Furthermore, if it takes a while to purchase Wi-Fi, you'll have less time to enjoy traveling. [Number of people] 【人数にんずう】 The next thing to keep in mind is how many people you're traveling with. Most pocket Wi-Fi devices allow upwards of 10 people to connect to them at a time. If you're traveling with a group of people, we recommend pocket Wi-Fi, as it will help save money. Another thing to consider is how long you'll be staying in Japan. If you're only going to be staying in Japan for a week or two, then carrying around a pocket Wi-Fi device probably won't be too much of a hassle. That being said, if you're going to be staying any longer than that, you might be better off getting a SIM card so you don't have to keep a pocket Wi-Fi device with you at all times. This also removes the risk of accidentally losing your pocket Wi-Fi device, giving you peace of mind. The last thing to keep in mind obviously is budget. SIM cards tend to be a bit more expensive than pocket Wi-Fi because of their ease-of-use. If you value ease-of-use and don't want to worry about the potential costs of having to pay for a lose pocket Wi-Fi device, then a SIM card could be your best option. Summary of Wi-Fi for Traveling in Japan 日本旅行にほんりょこうで使つかえるWi-Fiわぃふぁいまとめ nd that was our introduction to pocket Wi-Fi, SIM cards, and Wi-Fi apps, the 3 main ways of getting Wi-Fi in Japan. Our recommendation is to use a combination of both apps and pocket Wi-Fi or SIM cards. If you know you're going to be in one place for a while, you can use the apps to connect to a publicly available Wi-Fi network to save data on your pocket Wi-Fi or SIM card. Also, be sure to disconnect from your pocket Wi-Fi when you reach your hotel or whatever accommodation you may be staying at, and make sure to connect to the Wi-Fi network that they provide. That concludes our guide to Wi-Fi in Japan in 2023. We hope this guide can come in handy if you're considering traveling in Japan! h2 ruby { font-weight: bold; } .mod-article-caption .caption-heading { font-size: 2.4rem !important; } .caption-text { font-size: 2rem !important; } -

The Beautiful Snowscapes of Japan This video, titled "4K Beautiful snow scene in Japan 日本の雪景色 TOP14名所 winter scenery snowscapes snow light tourism trip," was produced by Discover Nippon. Japan is a country where you can enjoy the nature of all four seasons. The Japanese archipelago has a unique vertical topography, which means that in winter, the temperature in Hokkaido, located in the north of the country, can drop below 10 degrees Celsius, while in the subtropical region of Okinawa, it's possible to wear a t-shirt year round. In this article, we'll introduce you to some of the most beautiful snowscapes of winter in Japan alongside a beautiful 4K video! Sightseeing in Tokyo on a Snowy Day When people think of snow in Japan, they generally think of the snowy landscapes of Tohoku and Hokkaido; however, several times a year, snow falls in the capital city of Tokyo as well. The snow brings the city to a halt, making the Imperial Palace and Sensoji Temple, with its low traffic (both human and vehicle), a tasteful, hidden tourist destination. Tokyo's snowy scenery, which can only be seen once or twice a year, is a rare sight. However, transportation is tremendously impeded, so please be cautious when collecting information on traffic and weather forecasts. Places to See Japan's Representative Snowscapes If you're looking for beautiful snowscapes in Japan, then we've got just the list for you: ・Akita Prefecture:Igloos ・Gifu Prefecture:Shirakawa, The Northern Alps ・Hokkaido:Otaru Canal, Sapporo Snow Festival ・Yamagata Prefecture:Ginzan Onsen, The Ice Trees of Zao ・Ishikawa Prefecture:Kenroku-en covered in snow Even if you're not in the Tohoku region, you can still enjoy the spectacular snowscapes of the mountains, and even in the Tohoku region, there's not so much snow on the Pacific side. We recommend the hot springs in the mountains and onsen areas on the Sea of Japan side. Active Snowfall Scenery and Sights to Enjoy There are also plenty of places to enjoy winter sports in Japan. Japan is a popular destination for winter sports, having hosted two Winter Olympics to date. Many of the ski resorts where you can snowboard are located near hot spring resorts, so you can relax after a long day of skiing/snowboarding with delicious food and hot springs. If You're Traveling the Snowscapes of Japan, Hot Spring Tourism Is the Way to Go! Here's a list of hot spring resorts with snowy landscapes and winter sports: ・Nagano Prefecture has a great view of the Northern Alps and popular hot springs and ski resorts such as Hakuba. ・Niigata Prefecture is famous for its snow, hot springs and delicious seafood. ・Hokkaido is a paradise of hot springs, where many foreign tourists come to enjoy the large scale resort hotels with ski slopes. After skiing and snowboarding, you can replenish your stamina with Ghengis Khan (Jingisukan), a Japanese lamb dish. ・After skiing, you can enjoy playing in the snow in an igloo and relaxing in hot springs in Akita Prefecture. Kiritanpo hot pot is the specialty in this area! All of these are great places to visit, so find which one suits you best! Hokkaido and Nagano Prefecture are the host cities of the Winter Olympics, so it's safe to say that they're the Meccas of winter sports in Japan. Sightseeing at Temples and Shrines Where You Can Enjoy the Majestic Snowy Scenery Here are some temples and shrines we recommend checking out: ・Yamadera (Yamagata Prefecture): Yamadera, also known in children's songs, is a famous temple located in Yamagata Prefecture. ・Chuson-ji Temple (Iwate Prefecture): Chuson-ji is a World Heritage Site! The beauty of Konjikido with a snowy landscape is unbeatable. ・Iwakiyama Shrine (Aomori Prefecture): Iwakiyama Shrine, located on Mt. Iwaki, which is often mentioned in songs, is an Important Cultural Property of Japan and is the setting for Sansho the Bailiff. ・Towada Shrine (Aomori, Japan): A historical shrine with a lake with a beautiful emerald green surface. The contrast between the snowy winter landscape and the lake is like a beautiful painting. Summary of the Snowscapes of Japan Winters in snowy countries can be hard in terms of climate, but the beautiful, ink-painting-like world created by the snow that covers Japan's beautiful natural landscape is well worth seeing. Enjoy Japan's snowy landscape in the beautiful 4K video. -

How to Use Onsen: Video Introduction 温泉おんせんの入はいり方かたの動画どうが紹介しょうかい This video, titled "Japanese ONSEN Manners" (日本にほんの温泉おんせんマナー Japanese ONSEN Manners), was uploaded by "LetsJapanCh." It introduces how to use onsen in Japan. What Are Japan's Onsen? Sen (Spring)) in kanji, is the Japanese word for "hot spring." Japan is one of the world's leading hot spring countries, and there are around 28,000 onsen in Japan. It's not known exactly when Japan's onsen culture came to be, but records of onsen appear in historical texts, such as the Nihon Shoki (Chronicles of Japan), from Japan's Nara Period (710-794). Onsen Rules/Etiquette & How to Use Onsen in Japan Photo:Noren at a public bath(写真しゃしん:銭湯せんとうの暖簾のれんのイメージ) Because Japan's onsen culture dates back more than 1,000 years, there are many different rules, manners, and customs to observe when using them. Let's take a look at how to use onsen in Japan. As shown in the video, there are two entrances at an onsen- one for women and one for men. The entrances are marked by curtains called "Noren." The noren for the men's onsen generally have the kanji '男' (man), while the noren for the women's onsen have the kanji '女' (woman). If you're not used to Japan's onsen culture, this may come as a surprise, but before entering an onsen, one must get completely naked. This means no swimsuits, slippers, etc. One reason is that wearing swimsuits can dirty the water, but another reason is that the swimsuits will weaken the therapeutic effects of the onsen. [Video] 0:58 - What to Wear in a Japanese Onsen 【動画どうが】0:58~ 日本にほんの温泉おんせんでの服装ふくそうについて Before entering an onsen there are a few other things one must do. The first is to pour water over the body. This is to acclimate your body to the temperature of the onsen, and also to wash the body of dirt and cleanse it of impurities/evil spirits. [Video] 1:22 - Pouring Water Over Oneself Before Entering the Onsen 【動画どうが】1:22~ 温泉おんせんに入はいる前まえにかけ湯ゆ After cleansing your body, it's time for a shower. Unlike normal showers where you would shower standing up, it's proper manners to sit down when showering at an onsen. This is to prevent the water from splashing on others who may also be showering. Onsen are shared spaces, and so it's important to be mindful of others. [Video] 2:13 - Showering Before Entering the Onsen 【動画どうが】2:13~ 温泉おんせんに入はいる前まえにシャワー Many people may think it's common sense to not bring stools into the baths, but it's still a important. Actually, bringing any outside objects into the onsen is generally considered bad manners. Things like squirt guns, pool noodles, etc., are not allowed in onsen. While onsen are a place for relaxing, sleeping inside or near the baths is bad manners. Sleeping inside the baths is also dangerous as well, so definitely avoid doing this. As mentioned above, onsen are a shared space for relaxation. It's good manners to keep your voice down when enjoying the onsen. If you're with a friend and want to talk, be sure to talk quietly. Naturally, singing, yelling, etc., is bad manners. These manners also apply to saunas in Japan as well. [Video] 3:02 - Staying Quiet When Using Onsen 【動画どうが】3:02~ 温泉おんせんを利用りようするときは静しずかに After you've finished relaxing in the onsen and are ready to return to the dressing room, it's important to wipe your body off first. This is so that the floors of the dressing room don't get wet. [Video] 3:40 - Wiping Down Before Entering the Dressing Room 【動画どうが】3:40~ 体からだを拭ふいてから脱衣室だついしつに戻もどる Bathing in an onsen expends energy and the heat causes you to sweat, reducing the amount of water in the body. Because of this, it's important to relax for a while after bathing in the onsen, and grab some water or a sports drink to rehydrate. Many onsen in Japan provide yukata that guests can wear after bathing, and a lounge where they can relax. Can You Enter Onsen in Japan With Tattoos? One of the most frequently asked questions foreign travelers to Japan have when wanting to visit an onsen is whether or not it's okay to enter onsen with tattoos. Unfortunately, the answer to this is generally no. The reason for this is tattoos in Japan have long been associated with criminal organizations. In the past, criminals in Japan were even marked with a tattoo so that they could be easily identified. That being said, there are some onsen in Japan where you can enter with tattoos. Furthermore, there are places that allow you to enter as long as you cover up your tattoos. This can be done with special bandages and sprays sold in Japan. Unfortunately, some places won't let you enter even if you offer to cover up tattoos. In this case, there's not much you can do, and you're better off just finding a new place. It shouldn't be hard though with how many onsen there are in Japan. The Different Types of Onsen in Japan Photo:A bulletin board with health benefits written on it at Kinosaki Onsen(写真しゃしん:城崎温泉きのさきおんせん・効能こうのうが書かかれた掲示板けいじばん) Japan's onsen are said to be good for one's health, but there are many different types of onsen in Japan, and they all have slightly different health benefits. Below we'll introduce some of the different types of onsen in Japan. Standard, transparent hot springs with a small amount of minerals. Hot springs that contain salt and are good for muscle and joint pain. Hot springs that contain sulfates. Japan's onsen are relatively cheap to use. Most onsen cost only a couple hundred yen (a few bucks). If you're on a budget and looking to save money while still enjoying some of the authentic culture of Japan, onsen are a great experience. If you're visiting a hot spring town in Japan and planning to stay the night to enjoy sightseeing around the area, then you're going to have to book some accommodations as well. With that in mind, rather than staying at a hotel, we recommend staying at a ryokan. A ryokan is a traditional Japanese inn that serves traditional Japanese-style meals, generally has traditional Japanese rooms (tatami mats, sliding doors, etc.), and allows guests to relax in yukata, traditional Japanese clothing. This allows visitors to really experience Japanese culture and for roughly the same price as a hotel. Onsen ryokan are traditional Japanese inns with a focus on hot springs, and can be found in many hot spring resorts in Japan. Summary of How to Use Onsen in Japan There are many different rules and manners to observe when enjoying onsen in Japan, but even if you make a mistake, as long as you're careful there's nothing to worry about. Whether you're going to a famous hot spring resort or an onsen hidden in the mountains of Japan, you're sure to find some relaxing hot springs, regardless of the season. Just remember, if you have tattoos, it's best to do some research and find which hot springs you can enter to avoid any troubles during your trip. h2 ruby { font-weight: bold; } .mod-article-caption .caption-heading { font-size: 2.4rem !important; } .caption-text { font-size: 2rem !important; } -

Okunoshima AKA "Rabbit Island," Is a Paradise for Rabbits in Hiroshima Prefecture! Soothe Your Spirit With the More Than 900 Rabbits That Inhabit the Island!

Introducing this video of Okunoshima This video, titled "Okunoshima, AKA 'Rabbit Island,' in the Seto Inland Sea" (瀬戸内海の「うさぎ島」大久野島), was created by "AQUA Geo Graphic." The video shows scenes of Okunoshima, an island in Takehara City, Hiroshima, in Japan's Chugoku region. Adorable rabbits fill the screen, hopping around freely and you can enjoy their cuteness to your heart's content. More than 900 rabbits currently inhabit Okunoshima, and in recent years, the island has been attracting attention as a tourist area, with many visitors from both Japan and abroad. Why is Okunoshima known as "Rabbit Island"? Photo:Rabbits on Ohkuno Island, Takehara, Hiroshima You're probably wondering, "Are there really that many rabbits on the island"? Originally there were only 8 rabbits on the island. They were raised at a local elementary school in 1971. Over time, the island was deserted, and the rabbits were released to live in the wild. The rabbits belong to the European rabbit species, and are so fertile that they have actually been designated one of the 100 worst invasive alien species in the world. After being released into the wild, they multiplied rapidly, leading to a massive rabbit population in just a short amount of time. The trading of European rabbits is currently strictly regulated and Okunoshima is one of the few places in Japan where these wild rabbits can be seen. In fact, Okunoshima became a hot topic overseas before it gained attention in Japan. A foreign tourist who visited the island for sightseeing posted a video playing with the rabbits, and the video gained a lot of attention online. In addition, it just so happens that in 2011, it was the zodiac year of the rabbit and Japanese media introduced the island as "Rabbit Island" and that became the reason for the island's rise in popularity. A Look at Okunoshima Photo:Okunoshima, Takehara, Hiroshima Okunoshima is a small island with a circumference of about 4 km. You can make a full trip around the entire island on foot or on bicycle, and driving is prohibited. Additionally, be sure to follow the island's rules when interacting with the rabbits. Rabbits are anxious animals and are very sensitive to sound. Although the rabbits living on the island are wild, they are very friendly towards humans due to having become used to being fed by hand. This can be seen from 0:44 in the video. Unfortunately, the sounds of engines, braking, and honking are frightening and confusing to the rabbits. Furthermore, if you attempt to forcibly pick up or touch the rabbits, they may bite in self-defense, causing injury. Their bites are quite strong, so be careful! There are devices installed along the coastline which visitors can use to find out what the world sounds like to rabbits. This will show you why it's important to be careful around the rabbits. Okunoshima was temporarily uninhabited during World War II, but now almost the entire island has been designated a tourist destination. The land is owned by the Ministry of the Environment, with the Kyukamura Association being in charge of the daily operations of "Kyukamura Okunoshima Hotel". In other words, most of the current inhabitants of the island are the employees of the hotel and their families. The History of Okunoshima Photo:Ruins on Okunoshima, Takehara, Hiroshima Okunoshima Island is now a place visited by many tourists who come to play with the adorable rabbits. However, during the early Showa Period, it was actually home to Japan's only poison gas factory, built by the Imperial Japanese Army. Additionally, it was originally meant to host a factory for building warships. This dark history led to the island being erased from maps for many years. There were a few private houses on the island, but the original islanders were forced out of their homes in order to build the poison gas factory. The history of that time is recorded in the Poison Gas Museum Summary of Okunoshima Island Photo:Okunoshima Wharf, Takehara, Hiroshima The island can be accessed via the ferry that departs from the Mihara area There is no plane access to the island. A trip by ferry takes only about 15 minutes, which means you can enjoy taking a day trip to see the rabbits on the island. The main facilities of the Kyukamura Hotel are as follows: ・ Tennis field ・ Fishing area ・ Beach ・ Outdoor pool ・ Camping site and more! You can also enjoy lunch at the restaurant. Detailed information can be found on the official website of the Okunoshima Visitor Center. 【Official Website】Okunoshima|Tourist Area|Takehara City Official Tourism Site Hiroshima Takehara Tourism Navigation https://www.takeharakankou.jp/en/ 【Tripadvisor】Okunoshima https://www.tripadvisor.com/Attraction_Review-g1022436-d3243254-Reviews-Okunoshima_Island-Takehara_Hiroshima_Prefecture_Chugoku.html -

Makomanai Takino Cemetery’s "Hill of the Buddha" in Sapporo, Hokkaido "Introduction to the Hill of the Buddha" (頭大仏の紹介), is a video about the Hill of the Buddha, a symbol of Makomanai Takino Cemetery where you can see the head of the Great Buddha. At Makomanai Takino Cemetery, you can also see a vast landscape of lavender hills with more than 15 thousand lavenders. This dramatic Hill of the Buddha, standing at the top of a dome-shaped slope, was designed by Ando Tadao, a famous architect, in 2016 to celebrate the 30th anniversary of Makomanai Takino Cemetery. It is made up of 57 parts, which were selected and processed from 4,000 tons of unpolished stones. It is 13.5 meters high and weighs 1,500 tons. Initially, it was called “Mitama Kuyo Daibutsu.” You can see the Great Buddha in its entirety from 0:08 in the video. The construction of the Hill of the Buddha began in October 2013 and finished in 2016. As you can see from 0:56 in the video, the hardest part of this project was growing the 15 thousand lavenders. With the advice of lavender farmers and the help of volunteers, they succeeded in growing the lavenders from seed. It took about three years to build the Hill of the Buddha, and the construction process can be seen from 1:31 in the video. Makomanai Takino Cemetery's Hill of the Buddha Source :YouTube screenshot The Hill of the Buddha at Makomanai Takino Cemetery, Sapporo, Hokkaido, features the Great Buddha poking his head out from the lavender hill. According to the architect Ando Tadao, the purpose of this is to emphasize the gratitude of the Great Buddha as “that which you cannot see stimulates the imagination.” As you can see from 4:07 in the video, there is an approach with lavenders when entering Makomanai Takino Cemetery. There is also a water garden, which is a bypass of the pathway behind the approach. The water is a boundary to purify mind and to awaken the extraordinary. After going through the water garden, there is a tunnel that goes through the hill, which is shown at 4:25 in the video. The tunnel represents the womb and is lined with concrete folds. You can see the Great Buddha as you pass through the tunnel, and the panoramic view of the Buddha, which you can see along the 135-meter walk, is even more impressive. The light from the sky lights up the Buddha and surrounds you with artistic scenery. Learn About the Construction Process at the Gallery and Café Source :YouTube screenshot Next to the water-basin, there is a gallery where you can see the construction process of the Hill of the Buddha. Here, you can find out what the famous architect Ando Tadao had in mind when he designed the project. Across the gallery, lays the “Rotunda Café and Store.” You can enjoy snacks and tea and buy original merchandise and souvenirs here. It was opened in 2018 as a rest station, due to the increase of foreign tourists. Also, there are replicas of Easter Island’s Moai statues, which carry the meaning of “living into the future,” as well as a replica of Stonehenge. Information About Makomanai Takino Cemetery Photo:The Great Buddha Access to Makomanai Takino Cemetery in Sapporo City, Hokkaido is 20-30 minutes from Makomanai Station by bus from the Namboku Subway Line. Sasaguri Kyudai Forest is located at the western edge of the Kyushu University Forest in Sasaguri, Fukuoka, in Japan's Kyushu Region. Approximately 50 species of evergreen broad-leaved trees and 40 species of deciduous broad-leaved trees grow in this lush 42-acre forest. The mysterious beauty of the bald cypresses floating on the surface of the water in Sasaguri Kyudai Forest has become a hot topic in Japan, attracting a constant stream of visitors from all across the country. Please take a look at the video below to see the mystical view of Sasaguri Kyudai Forest created by the bald cypresses. [Video] 0:37 - Sasaguri Kyudai Forest An Introduction to Kyushu University Kyushu University, often abbreviated to "Kyudai," is a Japanese university in Fukuoka Prefecture. It is one of the top universities in Japan according to various sources, including the Times Higher Education Japan University Rankings, where it currently ranks 6th. While most courses at Kyushu University are taught in Japanese and will require a JLPT N1 certificate to qualify for, the university also teaches a number of courses in English, and accepts students with an IELTS score of 6.0 or greater. In order to study abroad at Kyushu University, you must be enrolled as a degree student at one of Kyushu University's partner institutions, and be nominated by your home university as a candidate. Kyushu University's graduate school programs have differing requirements in each department, but enrolling in graduate school at Kyushu University requires students pass an entrance exam that is regarded as one of the most difficult in Japan. What is Sasaguri Kyudai Forest? Photo:Sasaguri Kyudai Forest, Sasaguri, Fukuoka Sasaguri Kyudai Forest is located at the western edge of Kyushu University Forest in Sasaguri, Fukuoka, and is jointly managed and operated by Kyushu University and the town of Sasaguri. There is also a walking trail and the area has been open to the public since 2010. The vast 42-acre Sasaguri Kyudai Forest is home to about 50 species of evergreen broad-leaved trees, including itajii and Japanese blue oaks, and around 40 species of deciduous broad-leaved trees, including jolcham oaks and Japanese wax trees. The most eye-catching of all are the giant bald cypress trees. More than a dozen conical trunks can be seen standing in a corner of Kamata Pond. The bald cypress is characterized by its aerial roots. The aerial roots protruding from the ground supply oxygen to the submerged roots. In Japanese, the bald cypress is called "Rakusho" (ラクウショウ), but another name for the tree, which is native to North America, is "numasugi" meaning "swamp cedar." As this name suggests, it prefers places such as swamps and wetlands. The bald cypresses at Sasaguri Kyudai Forest were planted from seedlings in 1977 by Kyushu University to study the tree. The trees are currently around 20 meters tall, but can grow as tall as 40 meters in their natural habitat. The tree's appearance also changes with the seasons, with bright green leaves in the summer and autumn colors in the fall. There's a 2km-long promenade around Kamata Pond in the center of Sasaguri Kyudai Forest, which has been certified as a "forest therapy base" by the Forestry Agency of Japan for its pleasant atmosphere which is great for forest bathing. The Habitat and Characteristics of the Bald Cypress, and How It Differs From the Dawn Redwood Photo:Dawn redwoods The bald cypress is a deciduous coniferous tree of the cypress family (Cupressaceae) native to North America. The name bald cypress comes from their historical tendency to be among the first trees in the American South to lose their leaves in the fall. The bald cypress is characterized by its ability to grow in swampy areas, as evidenced by its other name, "numasugi" (ヌマスギ, lit "swamp cedar"). Another characteristic of the bald cypress, which grows very fast, is that when it becomes an old tree, it grows aerial roots that serve to supply oxygen to its submerged roots. The bald cypress is easily mistaken for the dawn redwood, which has a similar leaf shape, but the difference is obvious when looking at the way the leaves are attached. The bald cypress' leaves are attached to the branches in opposite directions, while the dawn redwood's leaves are attached to the same part of the branch in pairs. [Video] 0:42 - The Roots of the Bald Cypress The Waterfront Forest at Sasaguri Kyudai Forest + the Best Times to See the Bald Cypresses Photo:Bald cypresses at Sasaguri Kyudai Forest, Sasaguri, Fukuoka The 2km-long promenade around Kamata Pond at Sasaguri Kyudai Forest is dotted with attractions, including five plazas. Among them, the Waterfront Forest offers a mysterious view that makes you feel as if you have wandered into the world of Ghibli, and has become a popular spot on Japanese Instagram. This spectacular view can be seen when the water level of Kamata Pond is high. The best time to see the water level rise is from early spring to around the end of Japan's rainy season (June-mid-July). In contrast, the water level is low from summer to fall, but during this period, you can see the aerial roots of the bald cypresses. The best time to see the autumn leaves is mid-November, when the falling leaves decorate the area around the trees in place of the water. Summary of the Bald Cypresess of Sasaguri Kyudai Forest Sasaguri Kyudai Forest is a photogenic spot that is rapidly gaining popularity. However, it's become so popular that many tourists visit the forest. As a result, the forest is experiencing problems, such as traffic congestion, and destruction of the forest due to violations of etiquette, such as barbecuing, littering, and taking photos in restricted areas. They've even considered closing the area to allow the forest to recover.... To prevent this from happening, please follow the rules and manners, and enjoy the cypresses of Sasaguri Kyudai Forest, one of the best healing spaces in Fukuoka. [TripAdvisor] Sasaguri Kyudai Forest
