Kumamoto Castle is a castle that was built in Higo Province and is also known as Gin'nan Castle. After being rebuilt by Kato Kiyomasa, the castle was used as a residence of the Hosokawa family of the Kumamoto domain until the end of the Edo period. In the Meiji period, the castle was the scene of the Civil War and many of its remains were burned down, but the turrets and gates are still standing and have been designated a national cultural asset.
