[Drawing Event] I saw Atelier Tanemaki’s summer workshop on Instagram and thought, I want to try this in Nishiokoppe too! so I planned it. With help from people knowledgeable about art materials and lots of advice from those around us, we made it happen! We prepared a large sheet of paper measuring 2.5 m by 3.6 m. It’s bigger than a single futon. I’d long wanted to draw on a large sheet of paper, but starting something on a blank sheet makes me a little nervous. This time the library cooperated with us and we borrowed many picture books! Like Atelier Tanemaki’s workshop, the theme was “Creatures Under the Water.” So we prepared about 20 picture books about fish, rivers, the sea, and related topics and started with a picture-book reading session. Once their imaginations for what to draw expanded, the children painted as they pleased. Spending the full two hours watching the large sheet gradually fill with drawings was really joyful. Even younger children not used to paints carefully chose colors and brush widths, and without worrying about getting messy they used their hands and feet to add color. The finished artwork is now displayed in the library.
