【Hongshan Bridge】Nationally Designated Important Cultural Property Nijibashi Bridge is located between Bungo-Ono City Mie and Usuki in Oita Prefecture, Kyushu. Nijizawa means "rainbow crossing the river", and as the name suggests, it is a large and beautiful arched stone bridge that crosses the valley river. In the late Edo period, it was built on a road that went back and forth between the towns of Mie and the castle of Usuki. Since this river is a Valleys, people at that time had a great deal of difficulty going down a steep slope, crossing the river and climbing the Slope again. In order to overcome this difficulty, Usuki and Mie's wealthy merchants pooled their funds to build it. It is a robust and beautiful stone bridge and has been designated as a National Important Cultural Property. It is the largest arched stone bridge of the Edo period in Oita Prefecture (span 25.4m). The Hongshu Bridge was built at the place where the molten tuff of the Aso pyroclastic flow was deeply carved by the water of the river.
