Himeji City, Hyogo Prefecture, once known as the Land of Harima, is full of attractive sightseeing spots.
Himeji Castle, also known as "White Heron Castle," was registered as a World Heritage Site in 1993.
The ruins of the Edo-era samurai residence, located on the west side of the castle, are now a beautiful Japanese garden called Kokoen, where cherry blossom viewing parties are held during the cherry blossom season.
Himeji Castle is not the only sightseeing spot in Himeji City.
We also recommend the Hyogo Prefectural Museum of History, the Himeji City Museum of Art, and the Japan Toy Museum, which has a collection of more than 70,000 toys and dolls.
A popular amusement facility, Himeji Central Park, is also a must-see tourist spot. There is the only drive-thru safari in Kansai that you can enter with your own car.
Himeji, also known as a gourmet town, has many exquisite gourmet foods such as hinepon, Himeji oden, and ekisoba, which are grilled with twisted chicken meat.
