Noite de Gran Chi A house standing across from GA.KOPPER guesthouse. It’s a small café named "Gran Chi." We held a live performance at this favorite place, where I often came for event meetings, dinner with acquaintances, and sometimes to practice piano. Inside the warm room with a wood stove, it was a night filled with music and voices. Trombone and guitar performances. Poetry readings. Band performances. With a break for roll cake time, there was also guitar singing. Though it was less than two hours long, the smiles and applause from the audience, and the laughter of the café owner and the sound engineer, were all delightful moments. What can we do next in this place? Even though the live just ended, I feel a bit restless.

On the first day of the marche, May 2nd (Saturday) to May 4th (Monday), the entrance of Roadside Station Kamu will be bustling with Nishiokoppe Marche. To coincide with the first day of the marche, we will hold a window art project where participants can paint on windows! The theme is "Flowers and Songs," and we invite you to decorate the windows inside the Roadside Station. Anyone, young or old, from inside and outside the village, is welcome to join. Participation is free of charge. Children under elementary school age must be accompanied by an adult. The event will take place from 10:30 to 11:30, but staff will be available until 15:00 when the marche vendors close, so feel free to ask if you'd like to draw! The materials used will be washable crayons. Additionally, in the hall where the karakuri organ is installed, the windows have been decorated in advance by local volunteers, so please look forward to that as well. The drawings you create will be displayed until mid-July. If you happen to pass by the Roadside Station, please stop by and take a look at the artwork!

[Shooting Gallery and Clockmaking] Friday, March 20 (national holiday) Forest Museum “Mokumu” was buzzing with visitors. Wooden craft maker Sasaki Kogei held a clockmaking workshop on the final day of their exhibit. At the same time, visitors could try a shooting gallery using wooden toy guns. ⏱ ⏱ ⏱ At the clockmaking workshop, I was surprised by the wide variety of numbers and decorations to stick onto the dials. For some reason, mushrooms were especially popular among the boys. They glued parts together and hammered nails to secure them, and in about 30 minutes each child finished an original clock. With a battery set in the back, the clocks worked perfectly. One child hugged their finished piece protectively, saying they would hang it in their room. 🔫 🔫 🔫 Meanwhile, the toy guns in the shooting gallery performed impressively. They could load six rubber bands at once and fire in rapid succession. Children who wanted to take long-distance shots lay on a chair a short distance away to aim at the targets. Making the puppet faces! In Nishiokoppe Village, there is a club that performs puppet theater. It’s called the puppet theater club Doremi. They have performed at local daycare centers, elementary schools, and the Forest Museum “Mokumu,” and they have also held shows in Shimokawacho and Monbetsu City. During winter and spring, they spend time making puppets and preparing props and background decorations for performances. One afternoon, we dropped in while Doremi members were gathered. Preparing for performances from summer 2026 onward, they were just shaping the faces and torsos of the characters that will appear. This year’s piece seems to feature humans and several animals. They glued several sheets of styrofoam together, then shaved and shaved, comparing their work with reference photos and shaving again. Areas shaved too much and add-on parts like noses are formed with paper clay and attached to the base. They then paste shoji paper over the surface to build the final shape. There is still painting and sewing of fabric parts to do, so completion will take more time, but I could have watched forever as the members chatted while working—happy and serious at the same time. #Puppet theater #Doremi #Puppet making

“Demons Are Jumping Out of Mokumu!” The displays inside Forest Museum “Mokumu” have been refreshed. February means one thing: Setsubun! A demon’s hand bursts out from the wall, creating the kind of tension that seems ready to grab visiting children!! A giant ehomaki (lucky-direction sushi roll) hangs down above the entrance to the wooden amusement park. This year, it’s said to be best eaten facing slightly south of south-southeast. [Nishiokopper Live] Friday, December 19 A Christmas live held at Nishiokoppe Guest House GA.KOPPER. From the smallest villagers to the biggest villagers everyone performed their chosen acts, watched, and enjoyed the evening.☆ The venue was the dining room warmed by a wood stove. Many paintings decorated the stage window and the corridor windows, and festive lights twinkled here and there. At Nishiokopper Live, as usual, homemade sweets were on sale, and food like tacos and okowa (steamed glutinous rice), drinks, and desserts were served, so our stomachs were treated as well. People danced, played kendama, did readings, conducted experiments, and made music…. The night closed with samba. - Did everyone receive a present from Santa? Komu Museum of Art Christmas Festival Thank you to everyone who visited the Komu Museum of Art Christmas Festival! 🎄🧑‍🎄 Although the planned performance by the Nishinaka High School brass band was canceled, we enjoyed a warm Komu time listening to a reading by Sumikko Sumi-chan and a live set by Riku Nakanishi. Sumikko Sumi-chan read many Christmas and winter picture books and kamishibai in her clear, pure voice. She changed her tone for each character, and children who had been absorbed in block play were suddenly captivated. Riku Nakanishi has visited Nishiokoppe several times through connections with Local Friends. Alongside original songs, he mixed in Christmas tunes, letting his gentle voice and guitar fill the space with a Santa-world atmosphere. Setoushi‑kun also appeared that day, giving visitors sweets and handmade keychains as gifts! The Christmas decorations placed throughout the museum were lovely. - There are about ten days left in the year. Komu is open through Monday, December 29. The museum reopens on Sunday, January 4. Shimenawa-style arrangements completed They turned out absolutely lovely We created shimenawa-style arrangements! A workshop was held to decorate shimenawa with dried flowers, foliage, and berries. Mr. Sato drove all the way from Kitahiroshima to onesmanorgarden, braving winter roads once again. He brought a large supply of materials, so it was fun just to look and fun to choose. While making them, people worried and struggled when things didn’t go as planned, but it was still enjoyable. Seeing a neighbor’s piece, you’d think, “That arrangement works too!” or “That color combination is amazing!”—reactions that escaped everyone’s lips. Even before finishing, imaginations ran wild with thoughts like, “Next time I’d like to try making it this way.” There were three lessons over two days: early afternoon, evening, and the next morning.
