Yu Akari – A Winter Illumination at Kurokawa Onsen: Video Introduction This video, titled "Yu Akari 10-Year Anniversary Video" (湯あかり10周年記念動画), was uploaded by "Minamioguni Tourist Association" (南小国町観光協会). This video chronicles the 10-year history of Yu Akari at Kurokawa Onsen in Aso, Kumamoto, in Japan's Kyushu region, starting from the winter of 2012 through 2022. Yu Akari – A Winter Tradition at Kurokawa Onsen Photo:A hot spring inn at Kurokawa Onsen Yu Akari began after the head of the Kurokawa Onsen Tourism Association, noticing that winter in Kurokawa was slow, decided to create an event that visitors could enjoy during the winter months as well. The video shows the tranquil scenery of Kurokawa Onsen during winter. [Video] 0:20 - Snow Falling and the Beautiful Sound of a Murmuring River In modern Japan, dilapidated bamboo groves are becoming a problem all over the country. Kurokawa Onsen is no exception. The number of abandoned bamboo groves has been increasing, and is a constant source of concern. Under such circumstances, Kurokawa Onsen made efforts to thin out and regenerate the bamboo forests in order to maintain the beautiful satoyama environment. The new tourist attraction Yu Akari is a part of these activities to combat dilapidated bamboo groves. In 2022, Yu Akari celebrated its 10th anniversary and is now spreading throughout the town of Minamioguni. Starting something new is not an easy task in a tourist attraction known for its history, and sustaining it can be even more difficult. In Kurokawa Onsen, the younger generation has taken over the tradition of Kurokawa Onsen, with the strength from their predecessors, and has continued to create, nurture, and grow Yu Akari as a community. Photo:Yu Akari, Kurokawa Onsen Yu Akari is an event in which bamboo lanterns of various shapes and sizes are lit up throughout the town. They are positioned and illuminated so that they blend in with the natural landscape of the town, such as along the river and at shrines. The faint illuminations blend into the cold winter air and have become popular in recent years for their photogenic nature. You can see the director of the Kurokawa Onsen Tourism Association talking about the philosophy of the hot spring in the video. [Video] 0:52 - Kurokawa Onsen – One Ryokan for the Entire Community Event Dates and Illumination Hours for Kurokawa Onsen's Yu Akari Photo:Yu Akari, Kurokawa Onsen For its 10-year anniversary, the event ran from Saturday, December 18, 2021 to Sunday, April 3, 2022. Illumination hours are from sunset to 10 p.m. Lights can be seen at several locations, including Marusuzu Bridge to Kawabata Street (川端通り, Kawabata-dori), near Yamabiko Ryokan (やまびこ旅館), Jizo Hall (地蔵堂, Jizo-dou), the Ryokan Association (旅館組合, Ryokan Kumiai), Kurokawa Onsen Bus Stop (黒川温泉バス停, Kurokawa Onsen Basu-tei), and Kurokawa Shrine (黒川温泉明神様, Kurokawa Onsen Myojin-sama). Many couples can be seen enjoying an evening stroll, making it a sort of winter tradition in Kurokawa Onsen. The illumination event is generally held from around Christmas to the end of March, so be sure to check it out if you're visiting the area. Enjoy the Breathtaking Illumination With a Stay at a Traditional Japanese Inn Photo:Kurokawa Onsen, Kumamoto Prefecture Kurokawa Onsen has a number of highly recommended hot spring resorts that are popular for their photogenic views. There are also popular private baths that can be used freely and without charge. The dining space has tatami mats, sunken kotatsu, and standard tables for guests to choose from. The meals are centered on cuisine utilizing fresh, natural ingredients from the local mountains. Kurokawa Onsen – Ikoi Ryokan An inn famous for its hot springs which are said to promote beauty. It's also conveniently located near the hot spring resort. The meals consist of healthy Japanese cuisine using local vegetables harvested at the inn's private farm. Ryokan Kounoyu Ryokan Kounoyu has the deepest standing bath in Japan at 1.6 meters deep. All 9 guest rooms are detached from the main building, and all have open-air baths with free-flowing hot-spring water. Meals are prepared with an emphasis on local production for local consumption. Summary of Kurokawa Onsen's Winter Illumination, Yu Akari At Kurokawa Onsen, there are also hot spring tickets called "Nyuto Tegata" (入湯手形), which are valid for six months and allow visitors to choose three of the 27 open-air baths to bathe in during the six-month period. Since you can visit the baths on a day trip without staying overnight, these tickets are popular among hot spring lovers and people interested in the architecture of the hot spring inns, and you can even take one home as a souvenir. Of course, there are many other things to enjoy besides hot springs! While touring the hot springs, we recommend eating around the area as well. Cow Soap Commercial 'My First Trip To a Sento Bathhouse'" (銭湯、そのレトロ空間に初めて足を踏み入れた少年たちは…?牛乳石鹸CM「はじめての銭湯」篇), was released by "moviecollectionjp." Public baths, or "銭湯" (sento) in Japanese, are one of many Japanese cultures. There are many people who know the word "sento" but have never actually been to one. As the number of sento open for business decreases year after year, the opportunity to actually visit a sento for a bath is dwindling. To promote "Good Bath Day" on November 26, this video introduces the charms of Japan's sento. If you're interested in Japanese traditional culture, be sure to give it a watch! November 26, Good Bath Day Source :YouTube screenshot This video will help you learn how to enter a sento and what to be mindful about. If you're thinking about going to a sento in Japan, this video is a good place to start. In public places, such as sento, people are expected to behave in a respectful manner. Japanese and English subtitles are displayed at key points, so overseas travelers can easily understand what's happening. Learn How to Enjoy Japan's Sento in the Video Source :YouTube screenshot When you enter the bathhouse, the first thing you need to do is put your shoes in a locker, as shown at 0:19 in the video. Be sure not to lose the key! After paying the clerk, it's time for a bath! From 0:47 in the video, you can see children washing their bodies. At sento, it's good manners to wash your body before soaking in the baths. From 0:59 in the video, you can see adults and children helping to wash one another's backs, which is another charm of Japan's sento culture. It’s also important to follow proper etiquette, such as not entering the baths with a towel, and not diving into the water. After you've enjoyed your time at the bathhouse, there are certain manners to follow when getting out of the baths, such as putting away any buckets, etc. you used and wiping your body off properly. You can see a massage chair at 1:50 in the video. You can use these after a bath to revitalize your body. The video ends with the children bidding farewell to the woman at the booth. It's important to maintain good manners with people, not only in Japan's sento but when using other public facilities as well. So What Kind of Place Are Japan's Sento Exactly? Photo:A cypress bath and bucket at a sento Sento are public bathhouses in Japan. They are also called furoya (風呂屋) or yuya (湯屋) in Japanese. At sento, a boiler is used to boil a large amount of water, and tall exhaust chimneys are often a feature of a sento. Some public bathhouses use hot springs, and one of the best ways to enjoy visiting public bathhouses in Japan is to learn about the different types of spring water they use. Another appeal of Japan's sento is that you can enjoy a variety of baths, including cold water baths, denkiburo (baths with a slight electric current), waterfall baths, jet baths, medicinal baths, open-air baths, saunas, ganban'yoku, and more. Large scale public bathhouses are called "Super Sento" and often offer meals and other services. Another feature of public bathhouses is that the walls are generally decorated with special paintings and tiles. When you visit Japan, be sure to take a relaxing soak while enjoying the beautiful decorations of the bathhouse. The Roots and History of Japan's Sento Photo:Sento It is said that sento originate from the time when Buddhism was introduced to Japan. In the video, two women are shown enjoying a trip to the Yunoyama Onsen Morii Ryokan. You’ll feel the urge to visit Hiroshima’s Yunoyama Onsen Morii Ryokan after watching this video! Yunoyama Onsen: A Place Where Even the Feudal Lords of Hiroshima Have Bathed Source :YouTube screenshot Yunoyama Onsen is a natural hot spring in Hiroshima Prefecture, Hiroshima City, Saeki Ward, in the Chugoku region of Japan (中国地方広島県広島市佐伯区, Chugoku-chiho Hiroshima-ken Hiroshima-shi Saeki-ku). The waters of the hot spring, which have been flowing for generations, are known as the Yunoyama Myojin Reiken-no-yu (湯ノ山明神霊験の湯, Yunoyama myojin reiken-no-yu), and the sanatorium itself is a spiritual place where many come to worship. Yunoyama Onsen has a long history, with its waters beginning to flow in 1707, more than 300 years ago. In 1750, the Hiroshima Clan constructed the sanatorium, Yunoyama Myojinja (湯の山明神社, Yunoyama myojinja), which was later designated an Important Intangible Folk-Cultural Property of Japan. The head of the clan, Asano Yoshinaga, bathed in these waters. The Yunoyama Onsen of that time was as busy and bustling as 37 hot spring hotels, with many coming to visit. At 0:07 in the video, you can see a signboard on which is written “Hiroshima Clan Head Asano Sanatorium.” The history and origin of the Yunoyama Onsen is also recorded in Japan’s ancient history tomes. 1958 Yunoyama Sanatorium (湯之山旧湯治場, Yunoyama kyu-tojiba) was designated a Historic Site of Hiroshima Prefecture. 1972 Together with Yuki Onsen (湯来温泉, Yuki onsen), the Yuki・Yunoyama Onsen (湯来・湯の山温泉, Yuki・Yunoyama onsen) was designated a National Hot Spring Health Resort by the Minister of the Environment, and it became an exceedingly popular destination. This designation refers to hot springs which are suitable for promoting health and relaxation, with only 21 hot springs in all of Japan awarded this honor. 1974 Yunoyama Myojin Kyu-tojiba was designated an Important Tangible Folk-Cultural Property of Japan. The Yunoyama Onsen, run by Yukicho, was opened. 1991 “Yuki Yunoyama Onsen” was designated a National Hot Spring Health Resort especially suitable for the promotion of health. 1994 Kua House Yunoyama (クアハウス湯の山, Kua hausu yunoyama), run by Yukicho, was opened. Yunoyama Onsen was selected as one of the top hot springs in Japan for recuperation. The waters are unique in that they contain weak radioactive substances, and the temperature is a low 23.5 degrees celsius (74° F). The waters are effective for easing the symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis, poor circulation, mild hypertension and chronic disease. As shown in the video, there are two hotels near Yunoyama Onsen, namely the Yunoyama Onsen Morii Ryokan and the Yunoyama Onsenkan. At the Yunoyama Onsenkan, the Utase-yu (打たせ湯, Utase-yu), where water falls from an outcrop 4 meters high, is quite famous. About Hiroshima’s Yunoyama Onsen Morii Ryokan Source :YouTube screenshot Yunoyama Onsen Morii Ryokan is a hot spring hotel located at Hiroshima Prefecture, Hiroshima City, Saeki Ward, Yukicho, Wada 464湯来町和田464, Yukicho wada 464). It takes about 40 minutes from the Itsukaichi IC on the Sanyo Expressway (山陽自動車道の五日市IC, Sanyo jidosha-do no itsukaichi IC) to get there. Free parking is available. Another method is to take the bus from the Itsukaichi Station off the JR Sanyo Main Line (山陽本線JR五日市駅, Sanyo honsen JR itsukaichi-eki). The trip takes approximately 60 minutes. Constructed in 1935, more than 80 years ago, this is a hot spring area which upholds the value of “local production for local consumption.” The bath itself being a small, homely size with few rooms, this hotel is not one of those fashionable places generating buzz on travel sites. However, for the purpose of soaking up the simple atmosphere of the Showa era, and having a relaxing time, this place is the perfect getaway. There is a private onsen available for booking as well. It's introduced at 0:47 in the video. As for meals, the wild game nabe (hot pot) with boar meat purchased from local huntsmen, as well as dishes made using seasonal local produce, are popular. This is shown at 0:33 in the video. A day trip plan is available, where you can make use of the private bath as well as the rooms, with lunch provided. As for overnight stays, there are a variety of plans available, such as the provision of meals made with seasonal produce, a business plan, training camps, stays lasting for more than two nights, and more. Information About the Surroundings of Yunoyama Onsen Morii Ryokan Photo:Yunoyama doctor fish footbath Nearby Yunoyama Onsen Morii Ryokan is Kua House Yunoyama, which is equipped with water slides and an indoor hot spring pool. A hot spring meant for day trips is also available. Located in Kua House Yunoyama’s parking lot is the Kinsai Yunoyama (きんさい湯の山, Kinsai yunoyama), a farm-fresh produce delivery market. Locally-produced fresh vegetables, rice, homemade konnyaku jelly and more; there are a variety of seasonal goods available which cannot be found anywhere else. Furthermore, there is even the Yunoyama Footbath (湯の山の足湯, Yunoyama-no-ashiyu), with "doctor fish." There, you can soak to your heart’s content in the sacred waters of Yunoyama Myojinja. The facilities are open 24 hours. There is no designated fee, so all you have to do is place coins into the offering box as you see fit. As shown from 0:49 in the video, there are weeping cherry trees (枝垂れ桜, Shidare-zakura) both at the entrance of the Yunoyama Onsen as well as inside the shrine. This sight can be enjoyed throughout the four seasons. Summary of Hiroshima’s Yunoyama Onsen Morii Ryokan In Hiroshima, there are many hot spring areas such as Miyahama Onsen (宮浜温泉, Miyahama onsen), Hiroshima Onsen (広島温泉, Hiroshima onsen), Kinoe Onsen (きのえ温泉, Kinoe onsen), Ryu Onsen (龍温泉, Ryu-onsen), Megadaira Onsen (女鹿平温泉, Megadaira onsen), Kimita Onsen (君田温泉, Kimita onsen), Yuki Onsen (湯来温泉, Yurai onsen), Tomo-no-Ura Onsen (鞆の浦温泉, Tomo-no-ura onsen), Nukui Onsen (温井温泉, Nukui onsen), Shobara Sakura Onsen (庄原さくら温泉, Shobara sakura onsen), Miharashi Onsen (みはらし温泉, Miharashi onsen), and more. When visiting Hiroshima, we recommend taking a bath and relaxing in the hot springs. Although Yunoyama Onsen is not a ‘fashionable’ place by any means, what it is, is a place with rich history, and springs so amazing that even feudal lords bathed in them. Chinoike Jigoku at Beppu Onsen This video is a 4K video that introduces Chinoike Jigoku at Beppu onsen, Beppu, Oita. This video was published by "TokyoStreetView - Japan The Beautiful." Seeing the blood red hot springs and hearing the name "Blood Pond of Hell" might cause some readers fear. Well before you get too scared let us explain what kind of place Oita's Chinoike Jigoku is. Be sure to follow along with the video! Chinoike Jigoku Photo:Beppu's hot springs at night There are many famous hot spring resorts in Japan. Among them, Beppu City in Oita Prefecture in Japan's Kyushu region is the most abundant in Japan in terms of both the sheer number of hot springs and the amount of water that flows from the springs. Beppu onsen is one of the most popular tourist spots in Japan. Even regular city hotels have natural hot springs here. Chinoike Jigoku, located in the Beppu area, is a natural hell with a distinctive red hot spring. It has a long history and has existed in Beppu for over 1,300 years. Take a tour of Chinoike Jigoku and the surrounding area to enjoy the charm of this unique Japanese hot spring. Must See Spots and Key Points of Chinoike Jigoku Photo:Chinoike Jigoku Once you go through the gate, Jigoku mon (lit. "Hells Gate"), the first thing you'll see is the vivid red springs. The spring is shown from 0:56 in the video, and if you've never seen it before, you'll be really surprised at how red it actually is. Chinoike Jigoku looks like a pool of boiling hot blood as it bubbles and steams. This acidic melanterite spring is around 78 degrees Celsius. Why is the spring so red you might be wondering. This is because red hot mud, containing an abundance of magnesium oxide and iron oxide, erupts from the geological strata after a chemical reaction occurs naturally under high temperature and pressure underground. There is also a footbath at Chinoike Jigoku where you can dip your feet in the red hot water. After sightseeing, we recommend buying a souvenir called "血の池軟膏" (Blood Pond Ointment), a skin disease remedy made from the hot mud of Chinoike Jigoku. The "Hell Tour" of Beppu Onsen In addition to Chinoike Jigoku, there are many other locations called "Hells." Photo:Umi Jigoku Beppu Onsen's "Jigoku" hell tour includes 7 spots: Umi Jigoku, Oniishi Bouzu Jigoku, Kamado Jigoku, Oniyama Jigoku, Shiraike Jigoku, Chinoike Jigoku, and Tatsumaki Jigoku. These 7 spots are all part of the Beppu Jigoku Association. Chinoike Jigoku is easily accessible by train and bus. First, take the train from Beppu Station to Kamegawa Station in Oita Prefecture, and then take a bus to Kannawa. Admission to Chinoike Jigoku is 400 yen for adults and high school students and 200 yen for junior high school students and elementary school students, and there is also a discounted "Hell Tour" ticket that allows you to visit all seven natural hells (*Prices as of July 2020). Summary of Chinoike Jigoku As you can see in the video, Chinoike Jigoku is an amazing tourist destination where you can see a vivid red, natural hot spring.
