How Mino Washi is Made Source :YouTube screenshot As you can see from 0:08 in the video, Mino Washi is made from the highest quality mulberry called kouzo (楮), a special breed specifically used for making Mino Washi, using traditional Japanese techniques. The first step to making Mino Washi involves soaking the paper mulberry overnight in water and washing away any impurities in a process called "Mizusarashi" (水晒し). The paper mulberry may also then be removed from the water and laid out on the ground, being exposed to the sunlight in a process called "Agesarashi" (あげ晒し). From 5:56 in the video, you can see the mulberry plant material being boiled in a process called "Shajuku" (煮熟) after which the material is pounded. Traditionally, potassium bicarbonate extracted from wood ash was used during the boiling process. However these days, sodium carbonate, sodium bicarbonate or sodium hydroxide are commonly used, depending on the type of material being used. The fibrous material is then poured into a vessel called a "Sukifune" which the craftsmen can then use to create the Mino Washi paper. The fibers can be easily broken down due to removal of dirt and impurities in the previous steps. As there are many important steps and rules to follow in order to make Mino Washi, it is essential that all of the craftsmen are highly skilled. This method of salt making in Noto Peninsula dates as far back as the late 16th century when, at the time, salt production was encouraged by the Kaga daimyo (加賀藩主) as a means of supporting the local economy. The locals were able to borrow rice by paying for it with the salt they produced. In 2008, this Agehama-style method of salt making was designated an Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property and in 2018, the emperor at the time came to observe the salt production process first hand. Currently, Suzu city in Ishikawa prefecture is the only place where salt continues to be manufactured in this way. You can see this part of the process from 0:17 in the video. Then, from 0:36, you can see the seawater, which has been collected into a special type of round container called a "shikoke" (引桶), as it is sprinkled evenly across the salt evaporation ponds in a process called "shiomaki" (潮撒き). To ensure the seawater dries quickly, a rake-like tool called a "komazarae" (細攫え) is used to create grooves across the salt pan which encourages evaporation of the water by the wind and the heat from the sun. A tool known as an "Iburi" (柄振) is then used to gather sand in a process called "Kanzunaatsume". This sand is then shoveled into a wooden box-like structure called a "Tarefune" with a tool known as a "Shippatsu" (しっぱつ). Seawater is then poured into the Tarefune which washes off and separates the salt from the sand producing "kansui" (鹹水). From 1:38 in the video, you can see the boiling process. The Kansui is boiled for approximately 6 hours after which it is cooled down before being filtered in a container called a "douke" (胴桶). The Kansui is then boiled for another 16 hours until crystallized salt is produced. This is then stored for another 4 days in an "Ideba" (い出場) or Shiodoko (塩床) to separate the salt from the "Nigari" (苦汁, concentrated solution of salts left over after the crystallization of seawater) and rid it of any impurities. Only then is the salt finally ready to be packaged. It takes approximately 600 liters of seawater to produce only 120 kilograms of salt. Yamagata Casting - A Traditional Craft Photo:tea kettle Yamagata casting is a traditional Japanese craft that dates back to the Heian Period (794 AD-1185 AD) when casting craftsmen found that the soil quality in the surrounding area was suitable for creating ironware. Many of the chagama (tea kettles) used nowadays in Japanese tea ceremony are made with Yamagata casting. You can see some of these tea kettles from 0:12 in the video. The thin, delicate Yamagata casting is currently being used in the production of traditional crafts such as Nambu Ironware (南部鉄器), iron kettles, and copperware, as well as building materials and machinery parts. Once the overall design has been decided, a mold is then created using sand and clay from Yamagata prefecture. The design that appears on the surface of the casting is first drawn on washi paper (和紙) which is then used to trace or imprint the design onto the mold. From 2:08 in the video, you can see the molten iron as it's poured into the mold, a process called "Ikomi" (鋳込み). It is then cooled and then removed from the mold, through a process known as "Katadashi" (型出し) in Japanese. "Kyo-Shikki" and "Zohiki Natsume" - Traditional Japanese Craft Culture This video, titled "Zohiki Natsume Lacquering" (象彦なつめ塗り) was uploaded by Masao Kudo. "natsume" are lidded containers used to store matcha tea used during traditional Japanese tea ceremony. In order to preserve the high quality of the tea, the natsume must be made in a way that leaves no gap between the main body of the container and the lid. Japanese lacquerware can be decorated using techniques such as Maki-e (蒔絵), however, the natsume you see in this video is simply covered in a coating of black lacquer, a simple yet beautiful finish that really shows off the skill of the craftsman. Source :YouTube screenshot In this video, third generation lacquer craftsman of Zohiko, Keiko Nishimura (西村圭功), demonstrates the traditional craft of lacquering natsume. The video begins with the craftsman coating a container made of ultra thin Japanese zelkova (欅, keyaki) with a base coat of "Kiurushi" (生漆), which is the unrefined sap of the lacquer tree. This can be seen at 0:55 in the video. The brim of the container is covered with washi tape in a process called "Kamihari" (紙張り) which strengthens the edge. Sand, water and lacquer from Japan's Kyoto region are then mixed together and applied to the container in a step called "Jizuke" (地付け). The craftsman then moves on to perform "Kukuri" (ククリ), a technique characteristic of Zohiko's Natsume. "Kukuri" is a process which involves combining powdered sharpening stone and lacquer, referred to as "Sabi," and then applying the mixture to the corners of the container and lid. The edges are then polished to produce a smooth finish and ensure that the lid and body of the container fit together perfectly. This is shown at 2:20 in the video. The lacquer is strained through a filter to ensure it contains no impurities before moving on to the "Nakanuri" (中塗り), Nakanuritogi" (中塗り研ぎ) and "Uwanuri" (上塗り) steps. The natsume are then placed in a "Furo" (a space with a high level of humidity) to dry, after which the Zohiko Natsume is complete. You'll be amazed at the number of steps and high level of skill involved in making these simple-looking, black lacquer coated natsume tea containers.
