Drone Footage of Kumamoto Castle's Reconstruction" (熊本地震から4年 修復作業続く熊本城をドローン撮影), was released by "Jiji Press Video Center" (時事通信映像センター) in 2020. Kumamoto Castle is a famous sightseeing spot in Kumamoto. It was damaged in the Kumamoto Earthquake that struck on April 14th, 2016 and reconstruction is currently ongoing. Reconstruction of the exterior of the large keep will be finished by 2020, and work on the interior of the large keep and small keep will continue through 2021. During the restoration period, the castle has a special viewing corridor, as shown at 1:05 of the video, where you can see a close look at the repairs taking place. The History and Characteristics of Kumamoto Castle Photo:Kumamoto Castle Kumamoto Castle, also known as Ginnan Castle, was built between the Azuchi-Momoyama period (1573-1598) and the Edo period (1603-1868) in Kumamoto, Akita, Higo as a flatland-mountain castle. After Kato Kiyomasa rebuilt the castle, it became the residence of the Hosokawa family of the Kumamoto Domain until the end of the Edo period. In the Meiji period (1868-1912), it was used as a battlefield for Satsuma Rebellion and as a school. The ruins of castle are designated as a national special historic site and the turret and gate which escaped the flames of the Satsuma Rebellion have been designated Important Cultural Properties. Condition of Reconstruction Photo:Restoration of Kumamoto Castle Kumamoto Castle was badly damaged in the 2016 earthquake. However, the castle barely survived, being supported by a single line of stone wall. This came to be called "The Stone Wall Miracle" and became a beacon of hope for the people affected by the disaster. The total cost of repairing Kumamoto Castle is estimated to be about 35.4 billion yen. If you donate more than 10,000 yen, you will receive a "Castle Lord Card" and "Castle Lord Certificate" and your name will be listed on the digital board. As of 2019, donations have exceeded 2 billion yen. The basic plan for reconstruction was created in 2018 and included "the early restoration of the castle tower, a symbol of reconstruction, and "a plan to lay the foundation to survive at least 100 years." Sanjusangendo is a historical tourist attraction that many students in Kyoto visit on field trips. The temple is a National Treasure and an Important Cultural Property, and is also known for its many annual events. This article will introduce highlights of and tourist information about Sanjusangendo. Sightseeing Information for Sanjusangendo, a Popular Sightseeing Destination in Kyoto Photo:The east gate at Sanjusangendo, Higashiyama, Kyoto Sanjusangendo is a Buddhist temple belonging to the Tendai sect of Buddhism, and is located in Sanjusangendo-Mawaramachi, in Higashiyama, Kyoto. It is located in the Higashiyama Shichijo area of Kyoto and is surrounded by many historical tourist attractions, including Hokoji Temple, Toyokuni Shrine, and the Kyoto National Museum. Regarding transportation, Sanjusangendo is conveniently located approximately 10 minutes by bus from JR Kyoto Station. There is also a parking lot available for those coming by car. There is an admission fee to enter the temple, and the average time required to visit and tour the temple is about 45 minutes. That being said, there are many attractions to see at Sanjusangendo, so we recommend setting aside adequate time to view everything the temple has to offer. History and Highlights of Sanjusangendo Photo:The Japanese garden at Sanjusangendo, Kyoto The video begins at the gate of Sanjusangendo and starts by introducing the Japanese garden located on the temple grounds. There are hydrangeas in bloom in the beautiful, well-maintained garden, which was designed as a strolling garden with a lovely pond located at its center by professional Japanese garden landscapers. Shown at 1:33 in the video is the main hall of Rengeo-in (Sanjusangendo), which has been designated as a National Treasure. The main hall is 120 meters long from north to south and has 33 spaces between the pillars, which is why it is called Sanjusangendo (三十三間堂, roughly "The Hall of 33 Intervals," because there are 33 intervals between the building's support columns). Sanjusangendo was built by Emperor Go-Shirakawa in the late Heian Period, but was destroyed by fire and the current building was rebuilt in 1266 during the Kamakura Period. In order to make Sanjusangendo resistant to earthquakes and fires, various seismic isolation methods have been employed, such as connecting the pillars with two beams. From 2:26 in the video, the inner hall of Sanjusangendo is introduced. There are a total of 1,001 statues of Kannon, Fujin and Raijin, the gods of wind and thunder respectively, as well as 28 Buddhist statues enshrined in the hall. The standing statues of the thousand-armed Kannon (Goddess of Mercy), designated as National Treasures are lined up in a row and are a sight to behold. It is said that among the statues there is always a Buddhist statue with a face that looks like you, or one that resembles the face of the person you wish to meet. Be sure to take your time looking… Then, shown at 2:37, you can see the 3-meter-tall seated statue of the Thousand-armed Kannon, also designated as a national treasure. The statue has 42 hands, representing the "thousand arms," but because it is difficult to sculpt such a statue 42 arms are sculpted instead, 2 of which form the Mudra of Veneration while the remaining 40 represent the 25 Buddhist worlds. Other attractions include Taikobei and Nandaimon Gate, which were donated by Toyotomi Hideyoshi. Annual Events at Sanjusangendo Photo:Omato Taikai, Sanjusangendo The most well-known events held at Sanjusangendo are "Yanagi no Okaji," a ritual involving holy water, and "Omato Taikai," a coming-of-age archery competition, both of which are associated with "Toshiya." Both of these events are held on Sundays around January 15th, and are always crowded with people. During "Omato Taikai," approximately 2,000 fresh adults loose arrows at a distance of 120 meters in the main hall. "Yanagi no Okaji" is a ritual of praying to the goddess of mercy with a toothpick and pouring water over worshippers to remove various illnesses, and is said to be particularly effective in preventing headaches. "Shunto-e" a spring festival held every year on March 3, is also a popular event, with flower exhibitions and performances, and peach charms for women. Founded in the 3rd year of the Tencho Era (826 A.D.) it is now a representative temple of the neo-Buddhist movement and Esoteric Buddhism, built by the then Emperor Saga, who asked the monk Kukai, known posthumously as Kobo Daishi, to build it. The precincts of Toji Temple are full of representative Japanese facilities, such as the five-story pagoda, Kondo Hall (金堂), Nandaimon (南大門, main gate), Todaimon (東大門, east gate), Jikido Hall (食堂), and many other sights. The precincts of the temple, with their elaborate arrangement, have been given the name "mandala." The five-story pagoda has burned down four times in the past due to lightning strikes, and has been rebuilt each time. The current five-storied pagoda is the fifth generation, built in 1644 with contributions from Tokugawa Iemitsu, the grandson of the famous warlord Tokugawa Ieyasu. Kurama-Dera Temple, Standing Quietly in the Midst of Nature in Kyoto. This Mysterious Mountain Protected by Tengu Is Full of Power Spots!
Art & Architecture- 82 plays

A Look at Kurama-dera Temple This video, titled "Kurama-dera Temple - Kyoto - 鞍馬寺," was created by "TokyoStreetView - Japan The Beautiful." Kurama-dera Temple can be found in Kyoto, a place popular as a scenic sightseeing destination. The temple stands quietly in the midst of nature. The temple, located in Kurama, Sakyo Ward, Kyoto City, Kyoto Prefecture, is famous for being the training ground of Minamoto no Yoshitsune and is also the stage for the Noh play Kurama-tengu. The temple has a long history, first founded 650 years ago by Gantei (鑑禎), a disciple of the monk Ganjin (鑑真). Gantei was also known as Sonten (尊天). In the Buddhist world, "Sonten" refers to the trinity of Bishamonten, Senju Kannon, and Goho Mao (also known as Vaisravana, Avalokitesvara, and Sanat Kurama). Thus, it can be deduced that Gantei was a prolific monk. The temple’s principal image is the statue of Bishamonten, and the current Kurama-dera temple is the main temple of the Kurama Sect. The history of Kurama-dera Temple in Kyoto Photo:Kuramadera Temple, Kyoto One day, Gantei had a dream in which he was told that there was a sacred mountain in the north of Yamashiro Province. In that mountain, he met a white horse with a precious saddle. The white horse that appeared on the mountain was the origin of the name Kurama for the temple. The mountain was later named for the temple, becoming Kurama Mountain. There is also a legend called the Konjaku Monogatarishu that the god of Kifune Shrine (貴船神社, kifune jinja) near Kurama-dera Temple appeared in front of Fujiwara no Isendo (藤原伊勢人) and instructed him to build a temple enshrining Bishamonten and Senju Kannon. This is another legend of the origins of Kurama-dera Temple. What is the principal image of Kurama Mountain, "Sonten"? Photo:Kuramadera Temple Maoden, Kyoto Sonten refers to the monk Gantei, as well as the trinity of Bishamonten, Senju Kannon, and Goho Mao. Bishamonten is one of the four heavenly kings of the Buddhist faith, and is also believed to be a symbol of light and a deity of the sun. Senju Kannon is the deity of love, a personification of the moon, and has a yin-yang relationship with Bishamonten. Goho Mao symbolizes power, and is a personification of the Earth. It is believed that the union of these three deities connect the heavenly realm and the mortal realm. Although Goho Mao is not very well-known, in actuality, the legend of the tengu of Mt. Kurama as well as throughout Japan is actually referring to Goho Mao. Goho Mao descended from Venus to the earth 6.5 million years ago, and is said to have immense power. In Japan, the place where Goho Mao landed is believed to be Mt. Kurama. Due to the mighty spiritual power of Goho Mao, Mt. Kurama became a significant power spot. During the Heian Period (794-1185), the mountain was one of the sacred sites for Shugendo. Highlights of Kurama-dera Temple Photo:Kuramadera Temple, Kyoto Kurama-dera Temple is full of mysteries. Here, we'll introduce some charming areas of the temple. ・ Niomon Gate (仁王門, niomon): The entrance to Kurama-dera Temple ・ Genjosui (環浄水, genjosui): Holy water for purification, protected by the statue of the Bodhisattva Kannon. Visitors must purify themselves before entering to worship. ・ Aun Tiger (阿吽の虎, aun no tora): At Kurama-dera Temple, rather than a komainu lion-dog, a stone statue of a tiger is enshrined as a talisman. Since ancient times, tigers have been considered to be divine beasts which can ward off evil spirits. This can be seen from 1:42 in the video. ・ Kongosho (金剛床, kongosho): A stone floor inscribed with a hexagram in front of the main shrine. The hexagram is an important symbol in the practice of onmyodo (the way of yin and yang). ・ Kondo Main Hall (本殿金堂, honden kondo): Where the principal deities are enshrined. ・ Central Dojo (中心道場, chushin dojo): The training area for monks. ・ Reihoden (霊宝殿, reihoden): Records of the flora and fauna of Mt. Kurama as well as the Yosano Memorial are on display. ・ Tohakutei (冬柏亭): The study of Akiko Yosano. The original building was relocated from Tokyo. ・ Wesaku Festival (ウエサク祭, uesaku-sai): A festival held during the full moon in May every year. ・ Maoden (魔王殿, maoden): The inner temple where Goho Mao is enshrined. ・ Lanterns (灯籠, toro): Lanterns line the stone steps leading from Kurama-dera Temple to Kifune Shrine. The Kifune Momiji Lantern illumination is a fall tradition. During the fall foliage season, the crew of the Mount Kurama Cable Railway will serve customers in samue clothing. ・ Yojuji: A restaurant located on Mount Kurama. At lunch time, it's bustling with worshipers from Kurama-dera Temple. ・ Shuin: Red stamp. Popular as a memento of your visit to Kurama-dera Temple and Kifune Shrine. Summary of Kurama-dera Temple Photo:Autumn leaves at Kuramadera Temple, Kyoto As parking is unavailable, we recommend using the Eizan Electric Railway. Visitors can walk or take a cable car from Niomon Gate to the main hall. Along the mountain climbing route, you can enjoy the various sights and vast expanses of nature. Tokyo's popular sightseeing spot: Meiji Jingu This 4-minute long video, titled "Meiji-Jingu – Tokyo - 4K Ultra HD," was released by "Tokyo Street View – Japan The Beautiful." It is an introductory video of Meiji Jingu and introduces the highlights of the magnificent shrine. Meiji Jingu (Meiji Shrine) is a shrine located in the Yoyogi area of Tokyo's Shibuya ward (渋谷区代々木), which attracts many tourists from both inside and outside of Japan and is a spot you should definitely add to your itinerary when traveling in Tokyo. It is the most popular shrine in Japan for "hatsumode" (初詣, the first shrine visit of the year), with more visitors each year than any other shrine in Japan. It is also a popular spot for weddings and other celebrations, such as "Shichi-Go-San" (七五三). In the opening of the video, you can see the giant torii gate made from a 1,500 year old Japanese cypress tree. If you take a look at the view from beyond the torii gate, you'll see why this shrine was selected as one of the top 20 sightseeing spots in Japan by the Michelin Guide. Passing Through Meiji Jingu's Torii Gate Photo:Meiji Jingu, Tokyo The giant torii gate found at Meiji Jingu is the largest of its kind in Japan. Beyond the gate there is a small bridge and on the left hand side you can see many decorative sake barrels. Different brands have been gathered from all over Japan, and it makes for a very impressive display. Emperor Meiji was also known to enjoy drinking wine, and interestingly, many French wine barrels can also be found at the entrance to the shrine. Be sure to stay on the lookout for them when you visit. They can be seen at 0:33 in the video. After passing through the south gate (Minami Shinmon (南神門)) the main shrine will come into sight. From 2:21 in the video, you can see the famous tree known as Meoto Kusu (夫婦楠) which is believed to bring good luck in marriage, as well as many Ema boards. If you look at the wall, you will see many beautiful "kakizome" (書初め, the first calligraphy of the year). A Cafe in a Power Spot?! The History of Meiji Jingu's Inner Garden and Recommended Spots Photo:Irises in the Garden Meiji Jingu consists of the inner garden in Shibuya, which has a shrine and the shrine's grounds, and the outer garden in Shinjuku Ward, which has sports and cultural facilities. Meiji Jingu, was built on November 1st, 1920 in honor of the 122nd emperor of Japan, Emperor Meiji (明治天皇) and his wife Empress Shoken (昭憲皇太后). With a surface area equivalent to 15 Tokyo Domes, Inori no Mori (祈りの社) has been donated 100,000 trees from all over the country in an effort to increase the beautiful natural surroundings of the area. The area is scattered with spots you'll want to snap a picture of to post and share on social media! Another highlight of Meiji Jingu is its Imperial Garden (明治神宮御苑) which in June is covered with blossoming Japanese Irises. "Kiyomasa's Well" (清正の井戸) is a famous power spot inside the garden, and in recent years an increasing number of people are using the image as a wallpaper on their phones in the hope that it will bring them good luck. Other famous spots around Meiji Jingu include the turtle-shaped rock "Kameishi" (亀石) and the martial arts building "Shiseikan" (至誠館). If you're interested in learning more about the history of Meiji Jingu, we highly recommend visiting the adjacent Meiji Shrine Museum (明治神宮ミュージアム). For lunch, we recommend the delicious sandwiches served at Cafe Mori no Terrace (CAFÉ 杜のテラス). Meiji Jingu is open from sunrise to sunset, therefore the opening times vary depending on the time of year. Please check the official website for more information regarding hours. You can also find information on shrine etiquette and "Go-shuin" (御朱印) on the same website. Gingko Trees in Fall - Meiji Jingu's Outer Garden Photo:Jingu Gaien Ginkgo Avenue Meiji Jingu's outer garden features a variety of sports facilities, including a driving range, tennis court, and baseball field. Access to the area is great, and there's also a hotel parking lot in the vicinity. Many baseball competitions are held at Meiji Jingu Baseball Stadium, which is home to the Yakult Swallows, as well as the annual Jingu Gaien Fireworks Festival (神宮外苑花火大会). A spot we highly recommend in the outer garden area is the row of Gingko trees leading up to the Meiji Memorial Picture Gallery (聖徳記念絵画館). In November, just as the leaves are turning red, the whole area is lit up making it a great place to take a photo. Every year, more than 1.8 million people take part in the Jingu Gaien Ginkgo Festival (神宮外苑 いちょう祭り). Meiji Jingu Summary Photo:Meiji Jingu We hope you enjoyed this introductory video featuring the highlights of Meiji Jingu's inner and outer gardens. At 3:00 in the video, you can hear the sound of people visiting the shrine. Azuchi Castle - Explore the Phantom Castle Built by Oda Nobunaga, One of the Three Unifiers of Japan, in Omihachiman, Shiga

Azuchi Castle and Oda Nobunaga! This video, titled "The Phantom Azuchi Castle" (幻の安土城 HD版), was produced by "trocken ab." It's a video that recreates Azuchi Castle, the most prominent castle in the history of the Warring States period, using computer graphics. Azuchi Castle, introduced in the video, is known by many for being featured in "Gō: Hime-tachi no Sengoku," a Taiga drama aired in Japan in 2011. Azuchi Castle was the home of Oda Nobunaga, the uncle of Gou, and it has been the setting of countless historical TV dramas. Presently, Azuchi Castle, which no longer exists today, is said to have been a beautiful and luxurious castle. About Azuchi Castle Photo:Azuchi Castle Ruins Azuchi Castle, a five-layer seven-story castle with one basement level and six floors above ground, was built on Mt. Azuchi near Lake Biwa over a period of four years from 1576 to 1580. Azuchi Castle, which was closer to Kyoto than Gifu Castle, was a symbol of "tenka Fubu," Oda Nobunaga's personal seal, meanining "Unify the nation by force; spread military force under the heavens." It is said that Toyotomi Hideyoshi was also involved in the construction of the castle. Unfortunately, the castle was destroyed by fire in 1582 after the Honnoji Incident instigated by Oda's traitorous vassal Akechi Mitsuhide, just two years after the construction of the castle. The ruins of Azuchi Castle, the former residence of Oda Nobunaga, has been designated as a special historical site. It is also protected as a Class 1 Special Area in Lake Biwa National Park. You can see the introduction of Azuchi Castle at 0:24 in the video. The Research Project on Azuchi Castle Shown in the Video Photo:Azuchi Castle・Kuroganemon Gate Since 1989, restoration of the stone walls and excavation of the ruins of Azuchi Castle began as part of the research and development project. From the foot of the southern side of Mt. Azuchi, shown at 0:47 in the video, there was once a great view of the entrance of the castle. Also, it was found that there were two entrances to the castle, the East and West gates, and through these discoveries, researches have been able to slowly understand what Azuchi castle would have looked like. Currently, Niomon Gate and a three-storied pagoda remain on Mt. Azuchi. More About Azuchi Castle Photo:Azuchi Castle Ruins・Ruins of the former residence of Toyotomi Hideyoshi According to records of Azuchi Castle, when it existed, it was common to take the route from Dodobashiguchi to Ote-michi, then use the Kuroganemon Gate route to get to the, outer citadel, outer region of the castle, and finally the inner citadel, to reach the lord of the castle. Ote-michi, which was used to welcome the Emperor, has been restored as well. You can see the restored Ote-michi at 1:57 in the video. In the outer citadel, there is mausoleum of Oda Nobunaga where Toyotomi Hideyoshi enshrined the remaining relics of Oda Nobunaga. The History of Kitaguchi Hongu Fuji Sengen Shrine ©ShozzaTrip Modifying Mt. Fuji is a World Cultural Heritage site, and Kitaguchi Hongu Fuji Sengen Shrine, which has a history of over 1900 years, has been designated as a National Important Cultural Property. Throughout history, Mt. Fuji has erupted several times. In the past, people believed the eruptions indicated the anger of the gods. Because of this, they built many Sengen shrines around Mt. Fuji and revered them as the gods of the volcano. The deity of beauty, Princess Konohanasakuya (木花咲耶姫, Konohanasakuya hime), is the primary god of the Kitaguchi Hongu Fuji Sengen Shrine. It is said that the shrine brings success in love, relationships, and business. Kitaguchi Hongu Fuji Sengen Shrine, located at the foot of the revered Mt. Fuji, attracts attention as a power spot where you can feel the energy of nature. Kitaguchi Hongu Fuji Sengen Shrine Precinct Touring Route As you walk through the huge gate toward the shrine precinct, there is a grand Zuishin Gate (随神門, Zuishin mon) (a gate that prevents evil spirits from entering the shrine) welcoming visitors. Many stone lanterns guide you to the shrine. After purifying yourself at the Chozuya (a place for ritual cleansing of hands and mouth with water when visiting shrines), go on to Haiden (the hall of worship) where the large Tengu (Long-nosed goblin) masks are enshrined. After visiting the sacred trees Fujitarosugi (Japanese cedar) and FufuHinoki (Japanese cypress), pray at the main hall in the back. Don't forget to visit Suwa shrine (諏訪神社, Suwa jinja) as well. When you're done praying, we recommend visiting Otsuka Yama (大塚丘, Otsuka Yama), the birthplace of Kitaguchi Hongu Fuji Sengen Shrine, and also where Yamato Takeru no Mikoto (日本武尊, Yamatotakerunomikoto) and Asama no Okami (浅野大神, AsamanoOkami) are enshrined. The view from the huge main gate through the main hall is introduced in the video at 0:47. Sightseeing at Kitaguchi Hongu Fuji Sengen Shrine Photo:Kitaguchi Hongu Fuji Sengen Shrine There are two types of seals visitors to Kitaguchi Hongu Fuji Sengen Shrine can receive. We recommend getting both! The fortunes that come with the charms and Netsuke (miniature sculptures) you can get at the shrine are also popular. The Yoshida Fire Festival is held at the shrine annually on the 26th and 27th in August. This festival is known as one of the "three most unique festivals in Japan." This fantastical fire festival is a must-see. Recap of Kitaguchi Honfu Fuji Sengen Shrine Mt. Fuji has long been revered as the god of volcanos in Japan. Fuji, it's worth visiting Kitaguchi Hongu Fuji Sengen Shrine, known as a sacred historical spot where the light filters through the trees beautifully.
