■■■ About the Mount Ontake-style Kagura Tournament
The Ontake kagura passed down in Kiyokawa is said to have begun in 1449, at the same time as the founding of Ontake Shrine.
This tradition has been handed down for centuries, and kagura in this lineage spread through Ono, Naoiri, the southern part of the prefecture, and as far as the Aso region. In 2007 it was designated an Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property by the national government.
We launched the Mount Ontake-style Kagura Tournament in 1988 to reexamine this local culture of kagura born from Kiyokawa’s landscape and to promote regional revitalization through kagura.
The tournament gathers traditional cultures from many areas into one event. Centered on Ontake kagura, the bold and brilliant dances, along with the splendid performances by the Kiyokawa Children’s Kagura Preservation Society that carry the Ontake tradition into the future, captivate many kagura fans.
