❚ Fukoji Temple
The bas-relief Buddha carved into the temple grounds, including its pedestal, measures about 11 meters in height, making it one of Japan’s largest bas-relief Buddhas. The enormous central figure is Fudo Myoo (Acala). Fudo Myoo is typically depicted with an angry expression, but years of exposure to wind and rain have softened this bas-relief into a rounder, gentler face. Though large, the Fudo Myoo here feels very approachable.
Fukoji is also called “Hydrangea Temple” because so many hydrangeas are planted there. During the rainy season, you can see many hydrangea blooms alongside the bas-relief Buddha.
The hydrangeas planted there are cared for by the temple and local community.
