The main hall was destroyed in the Satsuma Rebellion in Meiji 10 (1877). The current ceiling dragon in the main hall was created to recreate the cloud-dragon painting that was said to have once adorned the ceiling. Measuring 11 meters wide by 8 meters long and weighing a total of 800 kg, the work combines Souhakuryu, Hanamaru, and Higo Rokka and ranks among the largest in Japan. Its layered composition of carved colorwork and painting is unique. The best way to admire the ceiling dragon painted overhead is to lie back and look up!! For this plan, a bed is placed directly beneath the carved painted ceiling while Hanae Yamamoto, a therapist based in Kikuchi City, performs the treatment.
