The Flame Pottery of Nagaoka City, Niigata Prefecture This video, titled "Nagaoka City [Wow! Nagaoka] 80 Years Since the Discovery Flame Pots|Sharing Jomon Culture With the World!" (長岡市「ナルホド!ながおか」-~火焔土器発見から80年~ 縄文文化を世界に発信!), was created by "nagaokacity." The Jomon period flame pots discovered in Nagaoka City, Niigata Prefecture, in the Hokuriku region of Japan, were named after boldly decorated earthenware with four chicken-crowned handles and serrated protrusions, resembling a burning flame. Source :YouTube screenshot A replica monument of flame pots was set up in the high speed train concourse of JR Nagaoka Station, and the unveiling ceremony for the flame pots monument was held on January 13, 1987. Taro Okamoto, who attended the unveiling ceremony, says he had never encountered such an astounding aesthetic. This can be seen at 0:30 in the video. Approximately 80 years ago, flame pots were excavated at the Umataka Archeological Site in Sekihara, Nagaoka City in 1936. It was excavated by archeologists, Kensaburo Kondo and his parents, and later became a nationally designated historic site as the "Umataka and Sanju Inaba Archeological Site" because of the elucidation of the settlement and the discovery of pristine artifacts. The Mataka Jomon Museum opened in Nagaoka City in 2009 as a museum facility to preserve, exhibit and utilize these materials. This is the only museum in Japan with the theme of flame pots, and the museum has over 1,000 items on display. In 2014, the Emperor and Empress of Japan also visited the museum. This can be seen at 2:46 in the video. How Flame Pots Were Made Source :YouTube screenshot Looking at the designs, it's easy to tell that these are not simple designs. So then how were flame pots made? Flame-type pottery, including flame pots was used to cook food just like earthenware pots. This is known because they were found to be covered with soot and burnt residue. There are two classifications for these vessels: flame pots and flame-style pottery. Flame pots were the first vessels to be excavated by Kondo Junsaburo, while "flame-type pottery" is distinguished from similar pottery excavated thereafter. This is explained from 2:51 in the video by the Chief of the Umataka Jomon Museum. It is generally believed that flame pots are made by piling up triangles of clay to make jagged edges, and then attaching strings of clay to them and firing them to create unique patterns. You can see how flame pots are made in detail at 4:35 in the video. A similar type of earthenware is crown pots, but they have distinctly different rims and handles, and are thought to have been historically different from flame-type pottery. Sharing Flame Pots With the World Source :YouTube screenshot The Shinanogawa Flame Highway Cooperation has been working together with 4 cities and 1 town to promote the adoption of flame pot designs for the Olympic torch stand in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. At the 1964 Olympic Games in Niigata, a flaming earthenware torch stand was used, and it is still standing in the Niigata City Athletics Stadium today. These activities are widely performed by the Jomon Culture Supporters, an organization that makes 3D images of flame pots and flame-type pottery available to the public, and also holds workshops such as the Nagaoka Pottery Club to publicize their appeal. In addition, the British Museum in London has a permanent exhibition of flame pots and manholes with motifs of flame-style pottery and famous fireworks shows. Tokamachi Flame Pots: A National Treasure Flame-style pottery excavated at the Sasayama Archeological Site in Tokamachi City was recognized as a national treasure in 1999, and is preserved in the Tokamachi City Museum as an important cultural property of Japan, and as deep bowl-shaped pottery excavated from the Sasayama Archeological Site in Niigata Prefecture. Meanwhile, the story of the flame pots of Nagaoka City, "Flame -Style Pottery of the Shinano River Valley and the Culture of the Snow Country," has been recognized as a Japanese heritage. Summary of Flame Pots Source :YouTube screenshot Did you enjoy learning about ancient Jomon pottery? The pottery, discovered in Nagaoka City, Niigata, is incredibly beautiful and impressively designed considering when it was made. This video shows the beauty of the art and the flow of history that attracts many people. If you like pottery, be sure to visit Nagaoka City! -

The National Treasure: The Obsidian Stone Tool Assemblage of Shirataki The Shirataki area of Engaru Town in Hokkaido is best known for possessing Japan’s oldest National Treasure, the Obsidian Stone Tools Excavated from the Shirataki Archaeological Sites. In Hokkaido, only two items are designated as National Treasures: the “Hollow Clay Figurine (Chūkū Dogū)” in Hakodate City and this Shirataki assemblage. Its rarity underscores the significant cultural value that Engaru Town proudly holds. Image source :Engaru Town Tourism Association The excavated stone tools date from the Paleolithic era, long before the Jomon period, approximately 30,000 to 12,000 years ago. That people of the time crafted sharp blades and hunting tools by skillfully processing obsidian testifies to their advanced techniques and wisdom. These items are not merely tools but precious cultural heritage that still convey human ingenuity and the breath of antiquity to us today. What Is Obsidian? The “Volcanic Glass” That Enchanted Ancient Peoples Obsidian is a natural glass formed when magma ejected from a volcano cools rapidly. Because obsidian breaks with fracture points as sharp as a knife, it was an ideal material for tools in ancient times. You can see this obsidian in the video from 0:40. Image source :Engaru Town Tourism Association The Shirataki sourced obsidian is especially high in quality, distinguished by its jet black luster and a translucent aesthetic. During the Paleolithic era, it was fashioned into knives and arrowheads. Archaeological evidence confirms that it was transported not just across Hokkaido but also to Honshu and Sakhalin, suggesting Shirataki’s role as a hub in ancient wide area trade networks. Even today, its beauty continues to captivate. At Engaru’s Shirataki Geopark Exchange Center, obsidian is on permanently display, allowing visitors to examine it up close, and enjoy its mysterious, distinctive glow as light passes through it. Truly, obsidian is not just stone, but a jewel born from the earth. What sort of place is the Shirataki Geopark Visitor Center? Learn about the natural beauty and enduring history of Engaru, Hokkaido In 2010, the “Shirataki Geopark” was certified by the Japan Geopark Network. A geopark is akin to an “outdoor museum”, a place where you can enjoy learning how the earth was formed, and how life and human culture emerged from it. Image source :Engaru Town Tourism Association At the heart of it is the “Shirataki Geopark Exchange Center”. Inside, exhibitions showcase the allure of Shirataki obsidian and the formation of the land through volcanic activity. Displays show how obsidian emerges from magma, and how people in the Paleolithic era crafted it into tools through interactive videos and models. The Geotour is held annually from July to October, and allows you to go inside actual geosites accompanied by expert guides to get an intimate look at the Earth's magnificent natural forces firsthand. A must for anyone interested in visiting geosites! The mountaineering tour to Mt. Akaishi, the obsidian’s birthplace, is especially popular. From waterfalls and cliffs to obsidian outcrops and sweeping highland vistas, these are places where nature speaks its story. Shirataki’s geosites aren’t just for sightseeing; they are places where we are invited to wonder how rocks formed, or what life was like for people in ancient times. There are many spots that let you expand your imagination. Be sure to visit as many as you can! No. 8 Stream Outcrop (Obsidian Outcrop) One of Shirataki’s signature geosites, this outcrop represents one of the world’s largest obsidian deposits. The towering clif face, more than 15 meters high, clearly shows layers of obsidian lava, revealing traces of volcanic activity from about 2 million years ago. In Paleolithic times, obsidian was mined here and crafted into knives and arrowheads used in daily life. Visiting the site offers a striking understanding of the connection between humanity and earth, making it an inspiring spot not only for archaeology enthusiasts but also nature lovers. Hikone Castle” in Hikone City, Shiga Prefecture, Japan This video, titled "[Touken World] 'Hikone Castle' A Castle of Swords and Armor|Sword and Armor Exhibits|YouTube Video" (【刀剣ワールド】「彦根城」刀剣・甲冑に会える城|刀剣・甲冑展示の城郭 YouTube動画), produced by "Virtual Sword Museum [Touken World]," is a video introducing Hikone Castle, which is designated as an important cultural asset of Japan. Hikone Castle stands on Mt. Konki with a view of Lake Biwa and is a special historical site and a Class 1 Special Area of Lake Biwa National Park representing Hikone, Shiga Prefecture. The castle is a must-see for history buffs, as you can see swords, armor and other valuable instruments used by Daimyo (Japan's feudal lords). In this article, we'll introduce Hikone Castle, which has been designated a national treasure, alongside the video. What Is Hikone Castle? Photo:Shiga Prefecture・Hikone Castle Hikone Castle is a castle located in Hikone, Shiga Prefecture, which was once a prosperous castle town. It features one of Japan's 12 existing castle towers (five national treasures and seven important cultural properties) and is a popular tourist spot in Shiga Prefecture. It was built by Ii Naomasa and Ii Naotsugu who were ordered by Tokugawa Ieyasu to build the castle after the Battle of Sekigahara. The castle was completed in 1622, 20 years after construction began. You can see the entirety of Hikone Castle at 0:31 in the video. Currently, there are 12 castles built up to the Edo period (1603-1868), that still remain today with existing castle towers. Five castles, including Hikone Castle, have been selected as national treasures. Besides Hikone Castle, Inuyama Castle in Aichi prefecture, Matsumoto Castle in Nagano prefecture, Himeji Castle in Hyogo prefecture, and Matsue Castle in Shimane prefecture, are also designated as national treasures. Hikone Castle is a magnificent castle that has passed the beauty, age, and historical standards to be designated as a national treasure. As you can see from 0:59 in the video, a stone statue engraved with the words "The 8 views of Lake Biwa, Hikone Castle," has been erected in the moat of Hikone Castle. Highlights of Hikone Castle Source :YouTube screenshot The appeal of Hikone Castle is that its beautiful and dignified appearance survived the order to abandon castles and the fires from the war in the Meiji period (1868-1912). The construction of the castle is characterized by its use of stone walls and lumber from neighboring castles. The Tenshu (castle tower), Tsuke-yagura (attached towers), the Sawaguchi Tamon watchtower, and the three-storied western citadel watchtower, which were built before the Edo era, are designated as national treasures, and are one of the attractions of Hikone Castle. You can also see the Taikomon watchtower and Tenbin watchtowers in a very similar state as they were back then. The Hikone Castle Museum, located near the castle, is a must-visit spot for any history buffs out there. There are swords and helmets that were passed down to the the Ii Family, the Hikone clan leaders, that are exhibited there and you can also see valuable cultural assets. Beautiful Japanese swords that have been handed down from generation to generation in the Ii family are also on display. The exhibits of the Hikone Castle Museum can be seen at 2:12 in the video. Hikone Castle: General Information Photo:Hikonyan The admission fees for Hikone Castle is as follows: General admission ¥600 (high school students and above), ¥200 for elementary and junior high school students. Admission fees for the Hikone Castle Museum are: General admission ¥500, and ¥250 for elementary and junior high school students. They can also be bought in sets, and there's a ¥100 discount for general admission. Hikone Castle is open mostly all year round from 8:30-17:00. The average time spent at the castle is about an hour and a half. Access to the castle is a 15-minute walk from JR Hikone Station. There are several parking lots around Hikone Castle. The popular local mascot "Hikonyan" can be found in front of the castle tower of Hikone Castle and at the entrance to Hikone Castle Museum (free admission area) 3 times a month. Summary of Hikone Castle Photo:Hikone Castle "[Touken World] 'Hikone Castle' A Castle of Swords and Armor|Sword and Armor Exhibits|YouTube Video," produced by "Virtual Sword Museum [Touken World]," is a video that introduces Hikone Castle, a castle designated as a national important cultural asset. You can learn about the history of Hikone Castle as well as see swords and armor on display at Hikone Castle Museum. It's a must-see video for anyone interested in history! Also, in the spring, the cherry blossoms bloom beautifully, and you can enjoy the lit-up cherry blossoms at night. We also recommend riding on the sightseeing boat around the moat of Hikone Castle, sightseeing by rickshaw, and getting the seal stamp/castle stamp. There are also delicious restaurants at Hikone Castle's castle town where you can enjoy lunch. Toshodaiji Temple, a World Heritage Site in Nara: Video Introduction This video, titled "[Nara/World Heritage Site] An Ancient Temple Built by Ganjin|Toshodaiji Temple in Nara, Japan (Commentary Edition)" (【奈良/世界遺産】唐招提寺/鑑真建立の古社(解説編) -Toshodai-ji Temple in NARA, JAPAN (Commentary edition) -), was uploaded by "channel WASABI." Introduction to Toshodaiji Temple Photo:A stone monument at Toshodaiji Temple, a World Heritage Site in Nara City, Nara Prefecture Toshodaiji Temple is located in Gojo, Nara in Nara Prefecture, in Japan's Kansai region. It's an ancient temple with 1,300 years of history, founded by Ganjin (Jianzhen) in 759, and is the head temple of the Risshu sect of Buddhism, one of the Six Schools of Nara Buddhism. There are many buildings on the temple grounds that are National Treasures and Important Cultural Properties that showcase the Tenpyo culture (the culture of Buddhism in Nara at the time), and Toshodaiji Temple has been designated as a World Heritage Site. Ganjin, the Monk Who Built Toshodaiji Temple Ganjin, who built Toshodaiji Temple, was a high priest during China's Tang Dynasty. During the Nara Period (710-794 A.D.), he finally made his way to Japan after five unsuccessful attempts to travel there over a period of about 11 years, and after much hardship. When he came to Japan, Ganjin was already 66 years of age. He spent the first five years of his life in Japan at Todaiji Temple, where he established the precepts as the founder of the Risshu sect in Japan. He then opened a training center for those who would study the precepts. Later, many buildings, such as Kondo (金堂, lit. "Golden Hall"), were constructed by followers of Ganjin at this training center, and it became Toshodaiji Temple. In the Mieido Hall on the temple grounds, there is a seated statue of Ganjin (a National Treasure), and the doors are opened to the public in June for a special viewing each year. The stunning wall paintings completed by Kaii Higashiyama over a period of 10 years are also open to the public simultaneously. The Main Hall of Toshodaiji Temple Photo:Toshodaiji Temple Nara City, Nara Prefecture Kondo, the main hall located beyond Nandai-mon, the southern gate, is a representative building of Toshodaiji Temple that preserves the large wooden architecture of the Buddhist temple buildings of Japan's Nara period. In the center of the main hall is a seated statue of Vairocana that stand over 3 meters high, and to the right is a standing statue of Bhaisajyaguru, and to the left is a standing statue of the thousand-armed Kannon (all National Treasures). In the video, you can see the powerful and majestic Kondo Hall. [Video] 1:13 - Toshodaiji Temple's Kondo Hall Points of Interest at Toshodaiji Temple Photo:Toshodaiji Temple's Kodo Hall, Nara City, Nara Prefecture Toshodaiji Temple, a World Heritage site, has many precious temple buildings, and you can take photos lined with National Treasures to post on Instagram or simply keep as mementos of your trip. When you visit Toshodaiji Temple, you'll first see Nandai-mon (the south gate), and Kondo Hall (Golden Hall, the main hall) can be seen beyond it. Located between the main hall and the lecture hall is the two-story Kodo Hall (lecture hall). Next to the ordination platform, where stone steps have been preserved from Japan's Kamakura period (circa 1185-1333 A.D.), is the lotus pond said to have been introduced by Ganjin, the aforementioned Mieido Hall, and the sutra house and treasury on stilts. The auditorium where the statue of the Maitreya Buddha is enshrined can be seen here. [Video] 6:42 - Kodo Hall Various events are held throughout the year at Toshodaiji Temple. One of the most well-known is Uchiwa-Maki, in which hundreds of uchiwa (Japanese fans) are thrown from the temple tower. Receiving an uchiwa fan is said to bring good luck in warding off illnesses and evil spirits. Every year, on the anniversary of the death of Ganjin, the fans are scattered from the temple tower. Tickets for Uchi-Maki are distributed on the day of the ceremony. Video introduction of "Tsurugi Shrine" in Niu-gun, Fukui Prefecture This video, titled "[Echizen] Tsurugi Shrine: the birthplace of the Oda family - Tsurugi Shrine, Fukui, JAPAN-" (【越前国二宮】劔神社/織田家発祥の地 -TsurugiI Jinja Shrine in Fukui, JAPAN–), was released by "channel WASABI." Tsurugi Shrine, also known as "Oda Myojin," is located in Echizen, Nyu District, Fukui Prefecture. The area is known as the birthplace of the Oda family, including the famous warlord Oda Nobunaga, and the shrine is highly revered as an "Ujigami.” The History of Tsurugi Shrine Source :YouTube screenshot The origin of Tsurugi Shrine, with a history dating back 1,800 years, goes back to when the god Susanoo was enshrined on the peak of Kuragatake and called "Tsurugidaijin" (劔大神, The Great God of Tsurugi). During the Nara Period (710-794 A.D.), when the shrine was known as a sacred site, Tsurugi Temple (劔神宮寺) was already built. It is also said that the shrine, which enshrines Susanoo-no-Mikoto (素盞嗚大神) and Kehi (氣比大神), was handed over to Prince Oshikuma, the son of Emperor Chuai, during the reign of Empress Jingu. After the Warring States Period (1467-1615 AD~), Tsurugi Shrine was protected and worshipped by the Shiba, Asakura, and Oda clans. The sacred crest of Tsurugi Shrine, which is closely connected to Oda Nobunaga, is the same as the family crest of the Oda family: the Oda Mokko (Flowering quince). Highlights of Tsurugi Shrine Source :YouTube screenshot The temple bell, a national treasure, is the third oldest bell in Japan and is said to have been made in the Nara Period. It is also home to many other temple treasures, including the important cultural property "The Eight Stages of Nirvana on Silk." In the video, you can see the large torii gate, Shinyoko (旧神前院摩堂, a storehouse for portable shrines), the Chozusha (a ritual water station for purifying oneself), and the Hall of Worship (拝殿, haiden) starting at 0:58, as well as the Omokaru Stone (おもかる石, a sacred wishing stone. It is said that if it’s lighter than you expect then your wish will come true. If it is heavier, it will be harder for your wish to come true.) at Komatsutate Isaoshi Shrine (小松建勲神社) and Yakushi Shrine (薬師神社) starting at 3:05 in the video. On the premises of Tsurugi Shrine, we recommend paying attention to the approach to the shrine, as well as checking the monument to the birthplace of the Oda clan, and more. Another attraction of Tsurugi Shrine is that you can enjoy the seasonal scenery, such as the Asian fawnlily that grow in clusters on the shrine grounds. During Hatsumode (the first shrine visit of the New Year) at Tsurugi Shrine, the shrine is also crowded with visitors. Summary of Tsurugi Shrine Source :YouTube screenshot Tsurugi Shrine is a famous power spot with 1,800 years of history and offers breathtaking views, as shown in the video. Toji Temple - Exploring One of Japan's Representative National Treasures and Important Cultural Properties! Photo:Toji Temple, Kyoto Toji Temple in Kyoto is a relic of the Heian Period (794-1185 A.D.). Founded in the 3rd year of the Tencho Era (826 A.D.) it is now a representative temple of the neo-Buddhist movement and Esoteric Buddhism, built by the then Emperor Saga, who asked the monk Kukai, known posthumously as Kobo Daishi, to build it. The precincts of Toji Temple are full of representative Japanese facilities, such as the five-story pagoda, Kondo Hall (金堂), Nandaimon (南大門, main gate), Todaimon (東大門, east gate), Jikido Hall (食堂), and many other sights. The precincts of the temple, with their elaborate arrangement, have been given the name "mandala." The five-story pagoda has burned down four times in the past due to lightning strikes, and has been rebuilt each time. The current five-storied pagoda is the fifth generation, built in 1644 with contributions from Tokugawa Iemitsu, the grandson of the famous warlord Tokugawa Ieyasu. Here, we'll introduce some basic information and things to know when visiting Toji Temple. It is located within walking distance from any train after getting off at the nearby Toji Station or Kyoto Station. Parking is also available, so you can also access the temple via personal transportation. Some facilities require an entrance fee, which is about 800 yen for adults. The lecture hall has an extraordinary world view, with esoteric sculptures such as the Katsuma Mandala, a seated statue of the Five Buddhas, the Five Great Bodhisattvas, the Five Wisdom Kings, a seated statue of Brahma and the half-lotus of Sakra, and standing statues of the Four Heavenly Kings, all elaborately arranged. Another famous attraction is Miedo Hall (御影堂), which was the residence of the famous Buddhist monk Kukai (Kobo Daishi). The historical buildings and the magnificent Esoteric Buddhist art are a must-see. The fact that it has been designated as a World Heritage Site indicates its prestige. There is also Bishamondo Temple, known for Keigamon Gate, and a power spot where a rare deity, the god of rain, is enshrined, as well a the place where the power stone, "Tenkoseki" (天降石), sits. Video Introduction, History and Origin of Inuyama Castle, a National Treasure in Inuyama City, Aichi Prefecture The video "The National Treasure Inuyama Castle" (国宝犬山城 National Treasure Inuyama Castle) was produced by "SouthernValleyDiary." The national treasure Inuyama Castle was constructed in 1537 during the Muromachi Period (1336-1573), and it uses a structure implemented in some of Japan’s oldest castle towers. It was built in Inuyama City, Aichi Prefecture in Japan's Tokai region. It is popularly known as Hakutei Castle and not only can you see the castle town, but you also get a view of the majestic Mt. Igiyama and the entire Inuyama region from the castle tower built on the banks of the Kiso River. Photo:Aichi prefecture / Inuyama Castle It was Oda Nobunaga's uncle, Oda Nobuyasu, who built the national treasure Inuyama Castle. Later, in 1617, during the Edo Period (1603-1868), improvements were made to the castle towers by Naruse Masashige and it became what we know it as today. Naruse remained as the castle lord until the end of the Edo Period. Due to the establishment of prefectures in place of feudal domains, everything other than the castle tower was demolished. The castle suffered through some natural disasters such as earthquakes, however, through reconstruction, it was designated as a national treasure in the 10th year of the Showa period (1935). Also, due to revisions in the National Treasure regulations in the 1952, the castle was once again designated as a national treasure. Although it was once famous as a privately-owned castle, it is presently owned by the Inuyama Castle Hakutei Bunko foundation. The castle tower has a 3-tier exterior, including 4 interior floors, and 2 basement floors. Recently, the Shachihoko (an imaginary creature with a carp body and a tiger head) roof ornament was repaired and the castle's symbol was resurrected. Inuyama Castle, One of the Few Existing Castle Towers Designated as a National Treasure Source :YouTube screenshot Of the 200 castles that you can see in Japan, there are only 12 castle towers that exist from before the Edo period and that are still standing to this day. They are called the 12 Existing Castle Towers and the national treasure Inuyama Castle is one of them. Also, the 5 castle towers in Japan designated a national treasure are called the 5 National Treasure Castles and they consist of Himeji Castle, Matsumoto Castle, Hikone Castle, Matsue Castle, and of course, Inuyama Castle. The revered national treasure Inuyama Castle can be seen from 3:39 in the video. The treasured castle tower, the connecting smaller watch tower built on the stone wall, and the interior of the castle tower can be seen in the footage as well. Inuyama Castle and Places to Visit Nearby Source :YouTube screenshot On the eastern side of Inuyama Castle's castle tower, there was once a giant cedar tree. Unfortunately the tree is now dead, but it is revered as the sacred tree "Osugi-sama." The Inuyama Castle ruins are also designated as a national historic site. Some popular locations to visit near the castle are the gourmet restaurants and cafes that retain the traditional machiya (townhouse) ambience. Inuyama Castle Town can be seen from the beginning of the footage, and old, irreplaceable townhouses can be seen here as well. There are many restaurants selling soba/udon, ice cream, and gohei mochi (a type of sticky rice cake), so you will be able to enjoy seeing the sights while munching on a snack and walking around. Also, the building that once housed a famous kimono merchant, the Former Isobe Family Residence, still exists in its original state and is open to the public. The footage of the Former Isobe Family Residence can be seen from 0:18 in the video. Source :Youtube screenshot Near Inuyama Castle is the Inuyama City Museum of Cultural History, along with the Karakuri Museum, and the Castle and Town Museum. There you will be able to experience the rich history of Inuyama Castle. From 1:28 in the video, the display of the Karakuri dolls that were once used during the Inuyama Festival can be seen at the Karakuri Museum. At the Inuyama Cultural History Museum seen from 1:56, the castle town and Yama floats from the Inuyama Festival are shown, as well as a detailed diorama of Inuyama Castle, and the shachihoko. It's a 15-minute walk from Meitetsu Inuyama station and admission is only ¥100, so we definitely recommend visiting if you're going to the castle. A famous shortcut to Inuyama Castle is Sanko Inari Shrine which can be seen from 2:49 in the video. If you go through the numerous red Torii gates, you'll be overwhelmed by the sacred atmosphere. The heart shaped Ema (wishing plaques) are perfect for wishing for matchmaking and harmonious marriages, so this is a spot you should stop by if you're looking for love! There's a parking lot here as well, so if you plan on going by car, we recommend checking out the details of the parking lot. Summary of Inuyama Castle Source :YouTube screenshot What did you think? Video introduction of Nagoya Castle, a sightseeing spot in Nagoya City, Aichi Prefecture This video, titled "Nagoya Castle Main Tower Keep Promotional Video," was released by "2010Network." Nagoya Castle is a huge castle built in Aichi District (愛知郡), Owari (尾張国), formerly known as "Owari no Kuni," during the Warring States Period (1467-1615 AD). There are many castles in Japan, but the magnificent Nagoya Castle is by far one of the most popular among tourists. Nagoya Castle is a famous landmark housing many national treasures, including the superb castle tower. In 2018, the number of visitors to the castle exceeded 2.2 million. The History of Nagoya Castle Since the Warring States Period Photo:Nagoya Castle, Aichi Prefecture Nagoya Castle was built by Tokugawa Ieyasu, who emerged victorious from the decisive Battle of Sekigahara, and was built in nearby the ruins of Nagoya Castle (那古野城, Nagoya-Jo), said to be the birthplace of Oda Nobunaga. Tension was increasing with the forces of Toyotomi Hideyoshi during this period, and Ieyasu built Nagoya Castle as a key military location. Nagoya Castle served as the residence of the lords of the Owari domain for generations during the Edo period (1603-1868 A.D.) after Yoshinao Tokugawa, the founder of the Owari Tokugawa family. It became the Nagoya Detached Imperial Palace for the use of the imperial family after the Meiji period (1868-1912 A.D.). In the Showa period (1926-1989 A.D.), it was designated as Japan's first National Treasure as a castle building. Since then, it has continued to be open to the public as a highly popular tourist attraction. The Must-See Features of Nagoya Castle Photo:Nagoya Castle, Aichi Prefecture Nagoya Castle is also known as "Kinshachi Castle" (金 "kin" meaning gold) after the golden Shachihoko that decorate the castle tower, which has become a symbol of Nagoya. Besides the main tower keep, the magnificent honmaru (inner citadel) and Shoin Hall are must-see features. The outstanding Stone Walls of Nagoya Castle were built via stonewall construction in various areas, including the Mikawa Bay (三河湾, Mikawa-Wan) area. Kiyomasa Kato played an active role in the construction of the stone walls, and the huge stone said to be the largest stonewall in Nagoya Castle is called "Kiyomasa Stone." Enshu Kobori and Masakiyo Nakai were in charge of the construction of the castle tower. This is detailed at 1:10 in the video. When you visit the Sarumenbogaku Tea House, Yuin Tea House, and shops, you may also want to visit the Oribe-Do, which was built to honor Oribe Furuta. Nagoya Castle's Castle Tower Under Reconstruction! Photo:Nagoya Castle, Aichi Prefecture Since May 2018, the demolition and renovation of Nagoya Castle's castle tower has been carried out as the "War Damaged Wood Restoration Project" (戦災木造復元プロジェクト). The restoration of the wooden castle tower is scheduled to last until December 2022. Everyone is looking forward to seeing the restored castle tower once the restoration is finished. Summary of the Historical Nagoya Castle Photo:Nagoya Castle, Aichi Prefecture As shown in the video, Nagoya Castle is a building of great historical value built during Japan's Warring States Period. Video article 1:39A CT Scan of a Buddhist Statue Reveals It to Be the Work of Genius Buddhist Sculptor Unkei?! This Massive Work of Art Has the Potential to Change What We Know About History!

CT Scanning Research of the Four Heavenly Kings Statues of Nan'en-do at Kofukuji Temple in Nara! This video, titled "Unkei’s ‘mark’ found on Four Heavenly Kings standing statues," is about the Four Heavenly Kings statues at Nan'en-do in Nara Prefecture. It was published by "Asahi Shimbun." In 2017, the Tokyo National Museum conducted CT scans on the Buddhist statues of Kofukuji Temple in Nara Prefecture (奈良県, Nara-ken) to coincide with a special exhibit called "Unkei—The Great Master of Buddhist Sculpture." It opened up the possibility that the creator of the Mujaku and Seshin standing statues (無著世親菩薩立像, Mujaku Seshin Bosatsu Ryuzo), known as the most highly acclaimed Japanese sculptures, was none other than genius Buddhist sculptor Unkei. Presently in Japan, it is said that there are 31 other statues created by Unkei, but there is a likelihood that the number will rise as surveys continue. The CT Scan Research of the Four Heavenly Kings Statues Source :YouTube screenshot According to the video, by CT scanning the Four Heavenly Kings statues of Nan'en-do, and the Mujaku and Seshin standing statues of the North Round Hall (北円堂, Hokuendo), it was discovered that wooden parts containing tree cores had been combined to make both groups of statues. It is therefore said that the Four Heavenly Kings statues at Kofukuji Temple were created by Unkei. The commonality in technique used in the Mujaku and Seshin statues is an important factor to back the claim that the creator of both groups of statues is Unkei. In the video, the statue, over 2 meters tall, is neatly wrapped, and from 0:49 in the video, the x-ray CT scanning begins. From 0:10 in the video, Ryusuke Asami, section chief of the planning division at the Tokyo National Museum, says in interview, "the Four Heavenly Kings statues have never been photographed using x-rays before and the structures of the insides of the statues has also not been understood." What are the Four Heavenly Kings? Source :YouTube screenshot The Four Heavenly Kings are the four gods of Buddhism that protect the four directions and consist of the Jikokuten statue (持国天像, Jikokuten-zo) of the east, the Zojoten statue (増長天像, Zojoten-zo) of the south, the Komokuten (広目天像, Komokuten-zo) statue of the west, and the Tamokuten statue (多聞天像, Tamonten-zo) of the North. The Four Heavenly Kings statues at Kofukuji Temple were thought to be the works of Unkei’s father, Kokei, but from this research and researches on their styles, it has become increasingly believable that these were created by the hands of Unkei himself. The National Treasures and Important Cultural Properties of Kofukuji Temple Photo:Nara Prefecture・Kofukuji Kofukuji Temple, located in Nara Prefecture, consists of historical buildings, such as the East Golden Hall (東金堂, Tokondo), the West Golden Hall (西金堂, Saikondo), the North Round Hall, and the South Round Hall (Nan'en-do). The wooden statues of the Four Heavenly Kings at Kofukuji were moved from the Old Golden Hall (旧金堂, Kyukondo) to the South Round Hall replacing the Four Heavenly Kings statues in the South Round Hall, which are introduced in the video. Other than these, there are many temple treasures at Kofukuji Temple which were created during the Heian period (794-1185) and the Kamakura period (1185-1333), including the Asura statue, the wooden Medicine King (Bhaishajyaraja) and Medicine Superior standing statues (薬王菩薩・薬上菩薩立像, Mokuzo Yakuobosatsu・Yakujobosatsu Ryuzo), the bronze Medicine Master sitting statue (薬師如来坐像, Yakushinyorai Zazo), Ryowakiji statue, the wooden Manjushri standing statue (文殊菩薩立像, Monjubosatsu Ryuzo), the wooden Vimalakirti sitting statue (維摩居士坐像, Yuimakoji Zazo), the wooden Twelve Heavenly Generals standing statues (十二神将立像, Junishinsho Ryuzo), and the bronze Buddha head. Summary of the Four Heavenly Kings of Kofukuji Source :YouTube screenshot This article introduced the massive discovery of the Four Heavenly Kings of Kofukuji possibly being created by the genius Buddhist sculptor, Unkei. The research by the Tokyo National Museum may lead to an important discovery that unravels the mysteries of history. Nara Prefecture has flourished for more than a thousand years, back when it was called Heijokyo (平城京, Heijo-kyo), and it still has many sightseeing locations, such as Todaiji Temple, Kasuga Shrine (春日大社, Kasuga-taisha), Yakushiji Temple, Taima Temple (当麻寺, Taimadera), and more. Video article 4:09Why Is Ginkakuji in Kyoto's Sakyo Ward Called the "Silver Pavilion"? Discover the Allure of This World Heritage Site Through a Comparison with Kinkakuji

Ginkakuji Temple (Jisho-ji) Video Introduction Ginkakuji Temple (official name: Jisho-ji), located in Sakyo Ward, Kyoto City. The video "Ginkakuji Temple (Jisho-ji)" introduces its charm in a beautifully filmed presentation. From the very beginning (00:00), viewers are greeted with scenes of bamboo fences, stone walls, and gently winding paths. The sight of the grounds, with visitors strolling quietly to the accompaniment of the soft sounds of birds, leaves a lasting impression. Highlights such as the Ginsadan (Silver Sand Terrace), a moss-covered garden, and a waterfall with soothing sounds are beautifully captured starting at (01:12). By the end of the video, you may feel as though you’ve actually walked through the site. What is Ginkakuji, the UNESCO World Heritage Site in Kyoto's Sakyo Ward? Ginkakuji is a Zen temple built by Ashikaga Yoshimasa, the 8th shogun of the Muromachi shogunate. Its official name is Higashiyama Jisho-ji. Alongside Kinkakuji (Rokuon-ji), this temple is highly regarded. It originated as Yoshimasa’s retirement villa, the “Higashiyama Palace,” and was later converted into a Zen temple after his death. Photo: Kannon Hall at Ginkakuji Temple, a UNESCO World Heritage Site in Kyoto At the heart of the complex is the Kannon Hall, commonly known as the “Silver Pavilion.” Despite the name, no silver leaf was used. Its subdued elegance symbolizes Higashiyama culture. In 1994, it was designated as one of the “Historic Monuments of Ancient Kyoto,” a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage Site. The Kannon Hall (Silver Pavilion), the central structure of teh temple, was also designated a National Treasure in 1951 for its architectural value as a masterwork from the Muromachi period. Garden Aesthetics at Their Finest: Highlights of Ginkakuji Photo: Ginsadan at Ginkakuji Temple in Kyoto The artistic beauty of Ginsadan and Kogetsudai The Ginsadan, a dry landscape garden made of white sand, is one of the temple’s most iconic features. Designed to reflect moonlight, at night it conveys a mystical, otherwordly scene. The adjacent Kogetsudai is believed to have been built for moon viewing. Photo: Kannon Hall and Kogetsudai at Ginkakuji Temple, a UNESCO site in Kyoto These spots are popular for taking impressive photos. The patterns in the white sand change subtly with the light, offering something new with each visit. The serene moss garden and pond One of the first sights upon entering is the lush moss garden. Although moss thrives in shade and moisture, at Ginkakuji it spreads like a green carpet, perfectly maintained to offer a tranquil setting. Photo: Moss at Ginkakuji Temple, Kyoto The color of the moss subtly changes with the seasons, with fresh green in spring, deep green in summer, brown mingled with fallen leaves in autumn, and a frosty silver hue in winter. Each season brings a unique atmosphere. Walking through the gardens, you may feel transported to a mental oasis, as if even the very air and atmosphere are different. It's a calming escape from daily life. The beauty of tradition found in the details Ginkakuji’s appeal goes beyond famous structures. Its true appeal lies in the refined beauty of the details that captivate visitors. For example, a small waterfall in the garden appears around (01:12) in the video. Its gentle sound blends imperceptibly with the moss-covered rocks and trees, creating a serene sense of harmony with nature. Photo: Sengetsusen at Ginkakuji Temple, Kyoto Along the paths are small stone bridges and delicately woven bamboo fences that softly divide garden spaces. These details draw attention the more you look. Seasonal plants and red-berried shrubs add subtle accents to the greenery. Though these may seem like minor elements, they play vital roles in Japanese gardens. Their restrained yet captivating beauty reflects the essence of *wabi-sabi*, the Japanese aesthetic of imperfection and impermanence. Stone lanterns and moss-covered steps along the path reveal something new with each step, like turning the pages of a picture scroll with your own feet. Visitor Information: Access and Admission To reach Ginkakuji, take a city bus from Demachiyanagi Station (Keihan Line) to “Ginkakuji-mae,” which takes about 10 minutes. From the bus stop, it's about a 5-minute walk. Walking along the Philosopher's Path is also recommended, offering seasonal scenery and a peaceful pace. Admission Fees Adults: 500 yen, Elementary/Middle School Students: 300 yen Opening Hours Open year-round8:30–17:00 (March–November)9:00–16:30 (December–February) Plan to spend around 40 minutes to 1 hour. Mornings are generally less crowded and more serene. Nearby Attractions Philosopher’s Path Photo: Philosopher’s Path in spring, Kyoto The Philosopher’s Path extends south from Ginkakuji along a canal lined with cherry trees. Cherry blossoms bloom in spring, and fallen leaves cover the path in autumn. It’s known as the path walked by philosopher Nishida Kitaro and offers beautiful seasonal scenes. Eikando Temple & Nanzenji Temple Area Photo: Autumn light-up at Eikando Temple, Kyoto Within a 15–20 minute walk are Eikando, renowned for autumn foliage, and Nanzenji, famous for its aqueduct. Both are historic Zen temples, with exquisite gardens and architecture, making them ideal to visit along with Ginkakuji. Traditional Kyoto Cuisine Around Ginkakuji, you’ll find long-established restaurants serving dishes like yudofu (hot tofu), namafu dengaku, and Kyoto vegetables. Enjoying lunch in a calm Japanese-style setting is the perfect break during your visit. Voices from Visitors: Discovering the Appeal of Ginkakuji Highlights Shared in Reviews Reviews include comments like “More peaceful than expected, it was spiritually refreshing” and “Every view was so beautiful, I couldn’t stop taking pictures.” International visitors also praise it, saying it’s “a place to experience the spirit of Zen” and “one of the most serene temples in Kyoto.” A Photographer’s Paradise From Ginsadan to the Kannon Hall and pond reflections, Ginkakuji offers numerous photo-worthy scenes. The best time for photography is in the morning when the angled sunlight creates especially beautiful effects. It embodies the Japanese aesthetic of *wabi-sabi* and offers new insights and calm with each visit.
