The gassho-style houses, which are also known as the original scenery of Japan, are now tucked away in Gokayama in Toyama Prefecture and Shirakawa-go in Gifu Prefecture.
The gassho-zukuri village of Shirakawa-go and Gokayama was registered as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1995.
This region is one of the snowiest countries in Japan, and Shirakawa-go, with 100 gassho-zukuri buildings of various sizes, is a secluded area that is blocked by thick snow in winter.
The fantastic and idyllic scenery has become a popular tourist spot in Japan, and the thatched houses are loved as a landmark of Shirakawa-go.
Popular sightseeing spots around Shirakawa-go include Hirase Onsen, autumn leaves, shuin stamps collection of Myozenji Temple, Doburoku Festival, and lion dance.
