The bitter cold is over, and Ashoro is gradually becoming a comfortable season.
As the weather gets warmer, the number of climbers on Mt. Mekan seems to be increasing, but I would like to tell you once again about the precautions for climbing Mt. Meakan.
In recent years, with the increase in the number of mountain climbers, the number of accidents during mountain climbing has increased. In particular, it seems that there are many people who report that their feet hurt during the descent. Prepare well according to your physical strength, muscle strength, technique, and experience, and never overdo it.
Mt. Mekan is a mountain that is relatively easy to climb even for beginners, but it is a 1500m-class mountain in Hokkaido. Even in summer (around July), depending on the weather, the temperature can be close to 0°C, or it can be 35°C or higher. In addition, even if the Downtown area of Ashoro is sunny, there are many cases where the weather is bad at Mt. Meakan. There are also sudden changes in the weather. There are that pebbles may fly near the summit due to strong winds. Local people do not climb when the trees are making a go-go sound in the wind at the trailhead. Since it is an active volcano, please check the volcano Information and make a decision on climbing after fully being aware that it is an active volcano.
・Do not climb in light clothing.
As for shoes, it is desirable to have neat mountaineering boots. There are many tree roots on the Mountain Trail that look like a mesh, and it is slippery, especially when wet. There are no trees near the summit, and the ground is stone and sandy, especially on the descent. Some people fell and hit their heads and were transported by helicopter. In addition, considering the change in weather, temperature change, and wind near the summit where there are no trees, it is essential to prepare rain gear such as a rain jacket for climbing. When we climb around June, we try to bring at least one fleece to protect us from the cold. In July ~ August, even if the day before exceeds 30°C, the next day it may be below 10°C. Thereare it is necessary to take measures to protect against the cold, and it is necessary to prepare drinks and food well. Don't forget your map and compass.
・ Do not go off other than the mountain trail, do not collect animals and plants.
Mountain trail Maintenance is carried out every year so that people do not get lost in pink tape and rock markings (Implementation is scheduled for May 22 in FY2025). Do not stray from the Mountain Trail for the protection of flora and fauna. In addition, it is in a national park, and the collection of flora and fauna is strictly prohibited.
