The Hokkaido University Tomakomai Forest, where research on forests is conducted, covers a vast 2,715 hectares of woodland.
Part of the forest is open to the public and serves as a peaceful retreat for local residents.
The Horonai River that runs through the woods is a clear stream rated at the highest level in public water quality surveys by the Ministry of the Environment.
There is also a stand of cherry trees known as the "Sakura Danchi".
