Yakushima, an island in Kagoshima Prefecture south of the Japan, was designated as a natural monument in 1924 under the name of Yakushima Sugi Primeval Forest, a special natural monument in 1954, and Yakushima along with Shirakami-Sanchi was registered as the first World Natural Heritage Site in Japan in 1993, and Yakushima National Park was designated as the 30th national park in 2012.
