Exploring Japan goes beyond just stunning landscapes; it’s a journey steeped in rich traditions. Experiencing traditional Japanese style tea ceremony and making Wagashi with friends in Kimono or Yukata is just a wonderful experience which I will remember my whole life. This is the other side of cool Japan beyond the Natural beauty and mouth watering food. We enjoyed it in Asakusa area of Tokyo.

2024.12.03 Maruyasu Tanakaya Main Store On this day, the gluttonous Kasai was again lured by the sweet Aroma and said, "I visited the main store of Maruyasu Tanakaya. The person who took time out of his busy schedule to talk to us was Mr. Tsuchihashi. There and a main store near the Suwa Lake, and there are two stores in the Suwa City of Kamisuwa Station, one in front of Kamisuwa Station. The company was founded in 1929 in front of Kamisuwa Station as Maruyasu Tanakaya. This year, it is a confectionery and cake shop that boasts a history of 95 years. Speaking of Maruyasu Tanakaya? It is a "cheesecake entremet" that can also be ordered!! It seems that the beauty advisor Chizu Saeki introduced it as a more well-known opportunity. Cheesecake entremet itself is a flagship product that has been loved for 40 years. It is also shipped nationwide, so I hope that people from all over Japan will be able to enjoy it! Maruyasu Tanakaya has a strong image of Western confectionery, but when it was first founded, it made Japanese sweets. The recipe from that time is still being used in "Yokan"! It is made with red beans and azuki beans carefully selected from the fact that we have been wholesaling Rice, so please enjoy yokan! Mr. Tsuchihashi's recommendation is the country of ⇒ Shinano!! Gastronomical delicacies with chopped chestnuts in Butter castella and wrapped in lemon cream with a refreshing aroma! It has been loved for about 50 years, likened to the prefectural song "Shinano no Kuni" that the people of the prefecture love! Also, on the side, the ♪ country of Shinano is ~ 十州にぃ~ The old country name of 10 provinces is on the side of the packing paper!! I love this wrapping paper so much that I use the packing paper of the previous model as a teaching material. Maruyasu Tanakaya There are a variety of sweets, so there is also an eat-in space! I imaged Maruyasu Tanakaya making western sweets just like Cheese Cake Entreme. But it was wrong… At the beginning their shop, it was Japanese Traditional sweets shop. Yokan (sweet bean jelly) is as it was then. Mr. Tsuchihashi’s recommendation is “Shinano no Kuni”. It is butter sponge cake inside chopped finely chestnut. 9:00 ~ 19:00 Nov. 27th in 2024 Today I went to Engetsu-dou Hompo which is Japanese traditional sweets (Wagashi) shop in Suwa city! “Wa” means Japan. “Gashi” means sweets. So, Japanese traditional sweets call Wagashi? They have two shops in Suwa, Shimizu-machi area and Fukujima area. I went to Fukujima location. Don’t you notice about pictures??? Did you? I was focus for Wagashi… That’s why I forgot to take a picture about Engetsu-dou’s exterior… That’s big mistake! Horrible!!! I’m so sorry about that. I’m gluttony. Wagashi was right front of me, I lost from Wagashi’s temptation. So, I forgot took the shop’s exterior photo… Ms. Katagiri (landlady) introduce her shop and Wagashi. They founded in 1946. About 78 years. The shop was front of Kamisuwa station. They started with the different name of the shop. It became Engetsu-dou in 1950. Shimizu-machi branch opened in 1958. Fukujima branch opened in 1992. I asked her, “what is your recommendation Wagashi?” She told me Kojou Monaka and Kabuto Monaka. Monaka is a Japanese sweet that is bean‐jam‐filled wafers. Also, she said “You can enjoy Wagashi every season, and each shop has original sweetened red bean paste. So, you can enjoy to find your favorite shop. Now, gradually increasing foreign customers. I think they realized Wagashi is less than calories compare to cake.” ★ Engetsu-dou Hompo Fukushima branch 📍Nakasu-Fukushima, 5398-1 Suwa city, Nagano Pref. ☎ 0266-58-1547 ◎ Business hours: 9:00 ~ 19:00 ◎ Regular holiday: Shimizu and Fukushima stores, every Tuesday ★ Engetsu-dou Hompo Shimizu branch 📍Shimizu 1-2-12 Suwa city, Nagano Pref. ☎ 0266-52-1543 ◎ Business hours: 9:00 ~ 19:00

On this day, the gluttonous Kasai visited a Japanese confectionery shop that I had been interested in for a long time! It is "Koshido" in Suehiro, Suwa City. We interviewed President Kurita about his story. It is a long-established Japanese confectionery store that has been in business for 99 years since 1925 (Taisho 14)!! The current president seems to be the third generation. It just so happened that five days before I visited, a Local newspaper published an article saying that the hanging paper and stickers of Koshido's Standard products were designed by students of the Local Suwa Industrial High School. Even in the midst of history, I was fascinated by such a flexible place, and I made an appointment. According to the president, there used to be 60~70 stores in the Suwa City Confectionery Association, and there were Member stores stores in the city alone, but now there are only 17 stores. I wanted to pass on to future generations the culture of Japanese sweets that my ancestors left behind. I myself love bean paste, and I have always liked Japanese sweets. On this day, you can enjoy Japanese sweets in all four seasons I was able to learn anew!! Sakura mochi and Kashiwa mochi in Spring, peony mochi and hagi in Ohigan, pig mochi and tsutsugayu in autumn... I would like to introduce you to very delicate and delicious Japanese sweets! ◎ Koshido 📍 Suwa City Nagano Prefecture Suwa City Suehiro 12-12-9 ☎0266-52-0920 ◎ Business hours: 9:00 ~ 18:00 ◎Regular holiday : Closed on Wednesdays ◎ Online shop : www.okashi-net.com/mall/koshido/ This day, I went to Koushi-dou. Atami Ginza Shopping Street Ginza Street in Atami was once crowded with many tourists as the center of Atami. Use the Atami Chamber of Commerce and Industry in a building that operated as a bank until 1975. The heavy and retro building retains the atmosphere of that time. When you walk along the Ginza shopping street, you will encounter the same Japanese scenery as in the past, such as Dried fish hanging from the eaves, coffee shops that continue to operate as they were in the Showa era, and traditional Japanese confectionery stores. Recently, restaurants that are popular for seafood, cafes using local ingredients, sweets shops such as "Atami Pudding", Matcha "Atami Satori Honten", luxury Montblanc "Raw Silk Kiito", gelato, and guesthouses that offer interaction between locals and travelers have also opened, making it a street where you can feel the renovation. [English/Japanese] Mitsuhashi", a store specializing in natto sweetened fermented soybeans, is a 15-minute walk from the school. Kanro natto is a Japanese sweet made by boiling down beans in molasses and sprinkling sugar on them. Mitsubashi's natto is very carefully made and has an elegant taste. When I talked about natto to foreign students, they all reacted to the word "natto" and made a disgusted face. There are so many foreigners who do not like natto. But when I explain it properly, they all say they would love to try it. Since there are many bean snacks in Southeast Asia, they are interested in kanro natto. They don't sell kanro natto in midsummer, so if you are interested in kanro natto, please go there before summer. A 15-minute walk from the school is Mitsubashi, a honeydew natto specialty store. [English/Japanese] I would like to introduce "Nekoyaki" at a Japanese confectionery store called "Nekoma" located in "Soto Terrace," a spot that promotes traditional culture in Hachioji, which I wrote about in a previous article. This wagashi is very delicious with lots of sweet bean paste stuck inside. The face of the cat in this "Nekoyaki" is said to be modeled after a beckoning cat cat figurine that survived the Hachioji air raid. The beckoning cat is displayed in a store near this "Soto Terrace. There are several places and things related to the war in Hachioji. At our Japanese language school, we sometimes talk about the Hachioji Air Raid in class. Why don't you come and learn Japanese in a city with a rich history? I will introduce "Nekoyaki" at a Japanese confectionery shop called "Nekoma" in the spot "Kuwato Terrace" that transmits the traditional culture of Hachioji, which I wrote about in the previous article. This Japanese confectionery is very tasty with a lot of red bean paste inside. The face of the cat in this "Nekoyaki" is said to be modeled after the beckoning cat cat figurine that was burnt out during the Hachioji air raid. Maneki Neko is displayed in a shop near this "Kuwato Terrace". There are several places and things related to the war in Hachioji. Even in our Japanese school, we sometimes take up the Great Hachioji Air Raid in class. Why don't you learn Japanese in a city with a long history?

[English/Japanese] I visited Soto Terrace, a spot that opened last November to promote Hachioji's traditional culture. It is a 7-minute walk from Hachioji Station. You can reach it by passing through a small street in Hanamachi. I visited at night so it was very quiet, but I heard it is very lively on weekends and holidays with events. There is a nice store and I bought some cute sweets. I will report on the sweets I bought next time. Hachioji is an old town, so there are many events and places that convey traditional culture. I think it's a great city for foreign students to learn about Japanese culture! [English/Japanese] Tengu-yaki, a souvenir I bought on a field trip to Mt. Takao. It is shaped like a tengu, a demon said to live in Mt. I thought the filling was red bean paste, but it was made of crushed black beans, and the elegant sweetness was very delicious. Our school is located at Nishi-Hachioji Station, next to Takao Station. It took first place in the recently announced "Really Comfortable City to Live in Ranking". Nishi-Hachioji is located along the Chuo Line, which connects to Tokyo and Shinjuku, between Hachioji, which is convenient for shopping, and Takao, which is rich in nature. It is recommended for its many supermarkets and hospitals, and inexpensive rent 😊. The souvenir "tengu yaki" that I got when I went on an excursion to Mt. Takao. [English/Japanese] A 15-minute walk from Hachioji Station, I bought a "Hachioji Castle Monaka" at the Japanese sweets shop Senshuen. In fact, there was a castle in Hachioji in the 16th century. This "Hachioji Castle Monaka" is a confectionary shaped like the castle that existed at that time. The monaka is filled with sweet bean paste and is very tasty 😊By the way, Hachioji Castle is no longer there, but the place where the castle used to be is now a park. I would like to visit there with my students someday. A 15-minute walk from Hachioji Station, I bought "Hachioji Castle Monaka" at the Japanese confectionery shop Senshoen. 【English/Japanese】 I went to the rooster market in Hachioji with some of my students! There is an Otori Shrine about a 5-minute walk from Hachioji Station. I was impressed by the lucky and gorgeous decorations. Moreover, the sight of shopkeepers calling out good luck to customers who buy them was just like Japanese culture, and the students were very excited. On the way home, we bought a specialty of the rooster market, kirisansho rice cakes covered with a spice called sansho. It was very delicious. There are two more rooster fairs to come. We hope you will visit the rooster market as well. I went to the Hachioji Tori no Ichi with my students! There is Otori Shrine about a 5-minute walk from Hachioji Station. Impressed by the auspicious and luxurious decoration. In addition, the sight of the shop staff shouting auspicious things to customers who bought them was a reflection of Japanese culture itself, and the students were also excited. On the way back, I bought Tori no Ichi's famous kiri sansho mochi sprinkled with spices called sansho. It was very tasty. There are two more Tori no Ichi. Please come and visit us.

[English/Japanese] The photo shows "Dorayaki" from "Dorayaki Specialty Shop Makana" which is very popular in Hachioji. Dorayaki is famous among foreign students as Doraemon's favorite food. The dorayaki here was very delicious with its fluffy dough and not-too-sweet red bean paste 😊. The photo is "Dorayaki" from the very popular "Dorayaki specialty store Makana" in Hachioji. [English/Japanese] A 3-minute walk from the school, you can have matcha and nerikiri at Hanano, a cafe specializing in Japanese green tea. This is a wonderful store that is both a boutique and a café. Here, you can even try your hand at making nerikiri the Japanese confectionery pictured in the photo. International students, especially female students, like to look at the books of wagashi. A Vietnamese student said, "Wagashi changes its design with the seasons, and they are all so beautiful and wonderful. She said. The wagashi in the photo is designed as a "Gamaguchi" purse. I stopped by Tokyo Station over the weekend to take care of an errand and decided to have lunch at the gyutan restaurant "Rikyu" 利久. Everything tasted amazing and the stew was especially good. I always enjoy the soup served with gyutan, it's sort of like a refreshing break in between the savory bites of beef. Plus the beef inside of the soup is soft from being boiled and has a really nice texture to it. I was pretty surprised at the salad actually, as well. I usually am not a fan of the salads served with gyutan but this one had the perfect amount of beef on it and the dressing tasted quite nice, so that was a welcome surprise. The wagashi served with it tasted really good. I'm not sure about what it was exactly, but it was red bean paste with some sort of white filling, maybe even white bean paste, but it was a good way to finish the meal.
