Gion Matsuri is held throughout the month of July, however, Omukae Chochin, the event introduced in the video, is always held on July 10th. After Omukae Chochin and Mikoshi Togyo (a portable shrine parade) are held on July 10th, a large number of festival floats called "Yamaboko" (山鉾) are built for future parades. During the festival month, the Yamaboko float areas are filled with musicians dressed in kimono and yukata playing flutes and taiko drums to a performance called "Gionbayashi" (祇園囃子). Popular Events Held After Omukae Chochin Photo：Gion Matsuri, Kyoto Prefecture During "Yoiyama" (宵山), held on July 15th and 16th, the streets are closed off to vehicles and instead filled with a large number of food stands called "yatai" (屋台). You can see reproductions of stations from the start of Showa Era (circa 1926) to the present. Otenmon Gate, located straight ahead from Otorii Gate, is designated as an Important Cultural Property of Japan for its beautifully vivid vermillion lacquer. ◆Philosopher's Path Philosopher's Path is a 2km-long-walkway connecting Ginkakuji Temple (The Silver Pavilion) and Nanzenji Temple. The name is derived from Kitaro Nishida, a professor of Kyoto University and early-20th century Japanese philosopher. He used to walk along this path contemplating a myriad of things every day, thus the path came to be known as "Philosopher's Path." The canal along the path is the Lake Biwa Canal, which is drawn from the largest lake in Japan, Lake Biwa. The river near this path, Shirakawa River, flows from north to south according to its elevation, but the man-made Lake Biwa Canal flows from south to north.
