Daimonji Temple was built in the 2nd year of Hokame (771) by Prince Kaisei, the elder brother of Emperor Kammu. After that, Kobo Daishi Kukai stayed for nine years, and it is said that at that time he carved two statues of Kongo and Zao and made them the guardian deities of Daimonji.
