An Introduction to Noboribetsu and Its Connection to Oni Photo:Oni Hanabi fireworks at Jigokudani (Hell Valley), Noboribetsu, Hokkaido Noboribetsu is located in the Iburi subprefecture of southwestern Hokkaido and is known for its natural hot springs. Facing the Pacific Ocean to the south, it's a tourist city with rich natural surroundings that sits at the heart of Shikotsu-Toya National Park, a mountainous area with continuous volcanic activity. Noboribetsu is located approximately 1hr 30m from Sapporo by train. Statues of oni (Japanese ogre demons) and spiked clubs are scattered throughout Noboribetsu. Since it's said that oni protect the medicinal hot springs in Jigokudani, oni have become the symbol of Noboribetsu. During the "Oni Hanabi" (鬼花火, 'Demon Fireworks') event held in Jigokudani (Hell Valley), oni beat drums and shoot handheld fireworks to drive away people's misfortune! At Noboribetsu Jigoku Matsuri, red and blue oni accompanied by the Great Demon King Enma perform the "Oni Odori" dance to liven up the festival. Wakanoura is a place with magnificent views and is a general term for scenic places located in the southwestern part of Wakayama City in the northern part of Wakayama Prefecture in Japan's Kansai region. It is a nationally designated scenic spot known for its spectacular views, applied for jointly by Wakayama Prefecture and Kainan City. It was registered with the Agency for Cultural Affairs as a Japanese asset in 2017. The official name is Wakanoura, but since it can be read as "Wakaura" in Kanji, local residents sometimes call it "Wakaura." In this article, we'll introduce Wakanoura alongside the video. Origin of the Name of Wakanoura Photo:Tamatsushima Shrine, Wakayama Prefecture Wakanoura (和歌の浦) was originally spelled "若の浦" (same pronunciation, but different kanji), and when Emperor Shomu came on an imperial visit, Yamabe no Akahito, who accompanied him, wrote in the 919th poem of the Manyoshu Vol.6, "When the tide rolls in at Wakanoura, the mud flats disappear, and the cranes cross to where the reeds grow, all the while singing." Also, according to the Shoku Nihongi, the area was called "Wakanohama" (弱浜), but it is also stated that Emperor Shomu changed it to "Akanoura" (明光浦) because of the beauty of the landscape in the sun. Spectacular Sightseeing Locations in Wakanoura Photo:Tamatsushima Shrine, Wakayama Prefecture 1. Wakanoura Wakanoura, seen from 0:31 in the video, is a scenic spot surrounding Wakanoura Bay in Saikazaki, which centers around the tidal flats that spread out at the mouth of the Waka River and has Kumano Kodo's Fujishirozaka to its south, and the Kii Channel to its west. The beauty of the scenery has been recited in many poems since ancient times, and it has become a place where many cultural arts are nurtured. It was also loved by Toyotomi Hideyoshi and successive feudal lords of Kishu. During the Nara period (710-794 AD), Emperor Shomu was impressed by the scenery changing every moment due to the ebb and flow of the tide, and it's also a famous fact that he ordered the landscape to be preserved for a long time. The sandbar that stretches across the tidal flat of Wakanoura, separating it from the outside world, is called "Katao Nami" after a famous Waka poem. 2. The god of Waka is enshrined here and is the object of people's worship. 3. Imoseyama Imoseyama is the first of the six rocky mountains that line Tamatsushima, and can be seen from 1:50 in the video. Awa Odori is a famous attraction in Tokushima City, Tokushima Prefecture, located in Japan's Shikoku region, but there are many other attractive sightseeing spots in Tokushima Prefecture as well. This time, we'll introduce 5 recommended activities to enjoy in Tokushima City, Tokushima Prefecture. [Tokushima Recommendation #1] Traditional Performing Arts, Historical Heritages, and Other Japanese Culture Source :YouTube screenshot As you can see from 0:45 in the video, Tokushima City, Tokushima Prefecture, has a traditional culture called Awa Ningyo Joruri (a type of traditional puppet theatre), which is a nationally designated Important Intangible Cultural Property. In addition, Awa Aizome (indigo dyeing), seen from 0:39, is one of Tokushima's traditional industries. At the Aizome Craft Center (藍染工芸館, Aizome Kougeikan), you can experience aizome dyeing classes and buy craftwork that give you a sense of history and culture, as souvenirs. In addition, Tokushima is dotted with many historical heritage sites, such as ancient tombs, temples, and shrines. A valuable excavation site can be seen at Awashima Historic Park. It's a recommended sightseeing route for taking walks in Tokushima while feeling the history and culture. [Tokushima Recommendation #2] Shikoku Henro, a Temple Pilgrimage Photo:Ryozenji Temple, Tokushima Prefecture Shikoku Henro is a traditional pilgrimage in Japan. The first of the 88 temples in Shikoku, which were founded by Kobo Daishi, is Ryozenji Temple, located in Tokushima Prefecture. There are 22 pilgrimage sites in Tokushima Prefecture. The pilgrimage route also has shukuba (lodging), so if you're looking to complete the pilgrimage on foot consider staying at these. You can see images of the pilgrimage from 0:17 in the video. [Tokushima Recommendation #3] Activities To Enjoy With Children Photo:Bentenyama, Tokushima Prefecture Tokushima City, Tokushima Prefecture, is also known as the city of water. Every July, there are lots of activities that you can enjoy with your children, such as the Tokushima Hyotanjima Water City Festival (徳島ひょうたん島水都祭り, Tokushima Hyotanjima Suito Matsuri) and the Hyotanjima Cruise! The model of Hyokkori Hyoutanjima, a puppet show on NHK, was Hyoutanjima in Tokushima City. And there's another recommended activity that you can enjoy with your children! That is, climbing the mountain, Bentenyama, which is famous as the smallest mountain in Japan. Adults can reach the summit in 1 minute! If you climb the stairs, there is a shrine that enshrines Benzaiten, so why not enjoy a casual mountain climb with your kids and bring along some lunch to enjoy as well? The Tokushima Zoo, where you can experience feeding animals, is also a little-known tourist spot. [Tokushima Recommendation #4] Local Gourmet Food in Tokushima Photo:Gourmet Food in Tokushima Prefecture Tokushima is full of finger-licking-good gourmet spots! The one we recommend most is the local okonomiyaki "Mametentama," which can only be eaten in Tokushima. This is sweetly stewed Kintoki beans made into tempura (Kakiage in Tokyo style) and then made into okonomiyaki. The okonomiyaki sauce and sweet beans are a perfect match and are totally addictive. If you get tired of walking, you can always take a break and try Tokushima's famous Taki-no-yakimochi, at a cafe in Mt. Bizan. Taki-no-yakimochi is a local dessert that uses the famous water from Kinryosui Spring on Mt. Bizan, which was loved by successive generations of Tokushima feudal lords. Matcha goes great with the slightly sweet mochi. If you're hungry, try Tokushima's specialty, Niku-dama ramen, and replenish your stamina! Bizan and Awa Odori Source :YouTube screenshot You can see the whole view of the cityscape of Tokushima City, Tokushima Prefecture from Mt. Bizan. Also, you can climb to the mountaintop from the 5th floor of the Awa Odori Hall (阿波おどり会館, Awaodori Kaikan) by ropeway; and during this, you can enjoy traveling through the air while enjoying a spectacular view of Mt. Bizan and the sea. Awa Odori is a must-see for anyone sightseeing in Tokushima. Awa Odori has a male dance and a female dance, and the dance is performed by an organization called "Ren" (連). Every August, the city of Tokushima comes to life with many locals and tourists attending the event. You can see the scenes of Awa Odori from 1:51 in the video. Summary of the Attractions of Tokushima Prefecture Photo:Yoshino River, Tokushima Prefecture In this article we introduced 5 exciting activities to enjoy in Tokushima Prefecture, but what do you think? Imizu City's Kamaboko This video, titled "Shinminato Kamaboko- Imizu City, Toyama" (新湊かまぼこ -富山県射水市- Shinminato Kamaboko -Imizushi,Toyama,Japan-), was produced by "_kashi77." It shows the manufacturing process of kamaboko (fish cake), a local specialty of former Shinminato, Imizu city, Toyama, in the Hokuriku region. Kamaboko is a kind of "kneaded paste product" that is made by making white fish meat into surimi (minced meat) and then kneading it. It's also a Japanese food used in New Year's dishes for New Year's celebrations. In this way, it is an indispensable and popular Japanese food. Cod, shark, golden threadfin, wrasse and other white fish are used as ingredients; however, "Shinminato Kamaboko" uses surimi made from tile fish to enhance the flavor of the minced meat. It's called "Kamaboko" when steamed, "chikuwa" when baked, and "satsuma-age (a type of tempura) when fried and eaten. The origin of the word kamaboko comes from wrapping the surimi around a bamboo stick in a tubular shape. Because the shape resembled the ear (boko) of a cattail (kama), it came to be called "Kamaboko." Making Kamaboko Source :YouTube screenshot Here, we'll introduce how kamaboko are made. 1. Preparation Cut the raw fish into three pieces, removing the bones, innards, and skin. 2. Cut it up into smaller pieces Finely chop it with a knife. 3. Soak in water Soak the minced fish in water to get rid of the odor This is an important part of the process to bring out the elasticity of the kamaboko. 4. Drain Remove water from the fish until it is dried. 5. Surimi Grind it down finely. 6. Seasoning Season with salt, egg whites, and other ingredients. 7. Molding There are different types of kamaboko such as "Ita Kamaboko," which involves molding the ingredients into a half cylindrical shape, onto a small board made of wood such as cedar; and "Sumaki Kamaboko," which involves wrapping straw around the ingredients. As you can see at 0:12 in the video, each Kamaboko is made by hand, one by one, into the shape of a fish. 8. Steam The kamaboko is then steamed. This can be seen at 0:55 in the video. 9. Decorate As you can see at 1:06 of the video, they decorate the steamed kamaboko with colors, such as the pink of a sea bream and other colors and patterns. More About Kamaboko In Toyama Prefecture, kamaboko is famous as a gift for celebratory occasions, and it is used as a gift for engagement ceremonies and wedding receptions. In addition, kamaboko is often presented at births and milestones in life, such as entrance exams, graduations, coming of age ceremonies, housewarmings, and at Buddhist ceremonies. It is said to be customary to cut kamaboko that was received as a wedding gift and to distribute it to people who are close to you and to neighbors in order to share the joy. Toyama prefecture’s consumption of kamaboko is said to be the 6th highest in Japan. Introducing "Nouryomatsuri" (Summer Festivals) in Tokyo This video, titled "[4K]Tokyo summer, Bon odori, Tokyo Trip, Tokyo Travel, Tokyo tourism" ([4K]Tokyo summer 夏の東京•納涼祭(夏祭り) 東京観光 盆踊り Bon odori Tokyo Trip Tokyo Travel Tokyo tourism) is a video about "Nouryoumatsuri" (Tokyo summer festival), produced by Discover Nippon. Japan is colored by the nature of the four seasons. Tokyo is the capital and has many popular sightseeing spots where the past and present intersect. In Japan, there is a tradition of enjoying the coolness of the summer months by making various efforts to avoid the hot weather. The gentle, cool sound of wind chimes and the sprinkling of water along roads and in gardens to relieve the heat have become an ancient Japanese tradition. This is one of those summer festivals that have been passed down throughout Tokyo, and we present it to you with high quality 4K video clips. There are many photogenic and Instagram-worthy spots, such as yukata-clad, colorful and spectacular fireworks displays, goldfish swimming gracefully at food stands, and rows of wind chimes. Nowadays, many foreign tourists come to Japan for these summer festivals, and this article and video will give you information about Japan's most popular summer festivals across the globe. Tokyo's summer festival "Jindaiji Ondo Matsuri (Hozuki Festival) Photo:Hozuki We'll start with "Jindaiji hozuki matsuri," introduced at 0:42 in the video. This festival is held at a Jindaiji Temple in Chofu City, Tokyo, where spirits are welcomed with lantern-like "hozuki" decorations. There are stalls such with wind chimes, ground cherries, ramune, dumplings and shaved ice on the approach to the temple, and you can see people wearing Yukata, enjoying themselves at the festival. The sound of the water flowing in the Chozusha provides a cooling effect in the hot Tokyo summer. The 2023 Jindaiji Ondo Festival was held for the first time in four years. Although no sales of hozuki were held, an Ondo Happy Gate made of beautiful orange hozuki was set up in front of the Jindaiji temple gate from July 13 to August 15. As of June 2024, the schedule and other details of the 2024 Jindaiji Ondo Festival have not been announced, so we will wait for an announcement from the Executive Committee. Colorful Tanabata decorations line the shopping street in front of Asagaya Station. The highlight of the Asagaya Tanabata Festival are the Tanabata decoration of deformed anime characters made with "Haribote" (paper mache)." You can also see characters such as Anpanman in the video from 1:51. We can't wait to see what kind of characters we can expect to see in 2024. Information on the 2024 event is as follows. Dates: Wednesday, August 7, 2024 - Monday, August 12, 2024 Location: Asagaya Pearl Center Shopping Street Access: 1 minute walk from JR Asagaya Station Tokyo Summer Festival "Asakusa Hozuki Market" 2024" Source :YouTube screenshot Next up is "Asakusa Hozuki-Ichi." This festival is held on July 9th and 10th on Asakusa Nakamise Street, and can be seen from 2:04 in the video. The solanaceae perennial "Hozuki" is written in Kanji as 鬼灯 (devil's lamp). Japan's "oni" (demons) are a scary image, but before Buddhism became popular among the common people, it was believed that human souls would leave their bodies and become oni. In other words, oni were a subject of worship as well as fear. It is said that when the idea of Shinto and Buddhist practices were established, hozuki, whose shape resembled a lantern, were used as a guidepost to guide the souls of ancestors who had turned into souls/oni. Based on the Buddhist belief that the spirits of the dead become Buddhas, Hozuki-ichi was established as a summer evening festival at Sensoji Temple. Many people wear yukata and enjoy shooting games and goldfish scooping, as well as yakisoba and takoyaki, staples of the festival. This "Hozuki-Ichi" has another special meaning as well. It is also known as the "46,000 days" If you visit Sensoji Temple on this day, you will be recognized by the Goddess Kannon for having accumulated 46,000 days of virtue. It's great to be able to gain virture while having fun. At Sensoji Temple, "yellow fuda" and "thunderbolt-removal fuda," which are prayer cards, can be awarded only during the two days of the Hozuki-Market. Information on the Asakusa Hozuki Market in 2024 is as follows. Date: Wednesday, July 9 and Thursday, July 10, 2024 Place: Precincts of Sensoji Temple Access: 5-minute walk from Asakusa Station Tokyo Summer Festival "Edogawa-ku Goldfish Festival" 2024 Next we have the “Edogawa-ku Goldfish Matsuri” which can be seen from 3:05 in the video. At the Goldfish Festival held in July every year in Edogawa-ku, Tokyo, where goldfish farming has been popular since the Meiji period (1868-1912), there's goldfish as far as the eye can see! Various types of goldfish will be on display and for sale, as well as a variety of breeding products, and there's also the very popular luxury goldfish scooping event. Information on the 53rd Edogawa Ward Specialty Goldfish Festival to be held in 2024 is as follows. Dates: July 20 (Sat.) and 21 (Sun.), 2024 Time: 10:00 - 17:00 *Close at 16:00 on the 21st Place: Gyofune Park, Edogawa Ward Tokyo Summer Festival "Yukata de Ginbura" 2024 Photo:A couple wearing Yukata The next introduction is “Yukatadeginbura.” It can be seen from 3:51 in the video. Put on a yukata and enjoy "Dai-Ginza Bon-Odori," and "Uchimizu" to help you cool down! There are kimono rental stores in Ginza where you can rent a complete set of yukata, so feel free to enjoy wearing a yukata. Information on the "Yukata de Ginbura" in 2024 is as follows. Date: Saturday, August 3, 2024 Please check the official website and SNS for updated details. Tokyo Summer Festival "Sumiyoshi Shrine Festival" 2024 At 4:27 of the video, you can see the Yin Matsuri of the "Sumiyoshi Shrine Festival". The main festival, held once every three years, includes the unveiling of the lion head and octagonal portable shrines and the boat-tingo, in which the portable shrines are further carried on boats. The three pairs of lion heads are carried by young men, and the day before the parade of the mikoshi, they go around the town to purify the mikoshi by purifying it of evil spirits. The octagonal mikoshi, designated as a folk tangible cultural property of Chuo City and rare in the Kanto region, also makes its rounds. The video shows the shrine parishioners carrying the mikoshi sprinkling water on it to cool off. Information on the "Sumiyoshi Shrine Festival" in 2024 is as follows. Dates: Tuesday, August 6 and Wednesday, August 7, 2024 Location: Sumiyoshi Shrine and Tsukishima area Access: 10-minute walk from Tokyo Metro Tsukishima Station Bon Dance in Tokyo "Zojoji Temple, Jizo Son Bon Dance Festival" 2024 You can see Bon Odori from 7:06 in the video. Various summer festivals are held in various parts of Japan, and among them, Bon Odori is a very festive summer festival. In recent years, Bon Odori has attracted attention from overseas as a very unique event. Lively music and drums, as well as stalls and yukata, are the standard features of Bon Odori. People dressed in yukata and jinbei form a circle around a Yagura (tower) and dance happily with fans. This is an important part of the festival as you can enjoy the company of your ancestors that have returned to Obon. (It is a time when Buddhists remember people in their family who have died). "Tokyo Ondo" is the most popular Bon dance in Tokyo, but the choreography differs by region. It would be fun to learn how to dance all the Tokyo Ondos in the 23 wards and become a Tokyo Ondo Master. In addition to the Tokyo Ondo, Tokyo's Bon Dancing is also known for its unique theme songs. Songs from “Ikyyu San” based on the monk (Rinzai sect, Ikkyu Sojun) of the Muromachi period (1336 to 1573 AD), as well as world-renowned songs like Living on a Prayer by rock musician Bon Jovi, are used to create a unique experience. Bon Jovi even mentioned it on his twitter page and it was a hot topic for a minute. One of the characteristics of Bon Odori is that it is highly diverse, not bound by tradition. The Jizo Bon Dance Festival at Zojoji Temple is held in the immediate vicinity of Tokyo Tower, the symbol of Tokyo. Many windmills can be seen at the Jizo-san of Zojoji Temple. Dancing with windmills, which can be purchased at booths at the Bon Odori Festival, attached to the sashes of yukata (light cotton kimono) may be seen only at the Bon Odori Festival at Zojoji Temple. Information on the Jizo Bon Dance Festival to be held at Zojoji Temple in 2024 is as follows. Dates: Friday, July 19 and Saturday, July 20, 2024 Time: 18:00 - 21:00 *Jizoson memorial service starts at 17:30 Place: Zojo-ji Temple, plaza in front of the Main Hall Access:10 min. walk from Hamamatsucho Sta. on JR line or Tokyo Monorail. *For details, please check the official website. Sumidagawa Fireworks Festival" and "Itabashi Fireworks Festival" in Tokyo 2024 Photo:Fireworks The Sumida River in Tokyo Bay and the Jingu Shrine, which are crowded with people in yukata every year, are also popular places to visit in Tokyo. This can be seen at 9:35 in the video. Did you know that these fireworks have a spiritual meaning as well? The loud noise of fireworks is a deliberate design, and summer was a time when infections and food poisoning were more likely to occur In the Edo period (1603-1867), when medicine was not as advanced as it is today. The loud sound of fireworks was used to exorcise evil and bring good health. It is said that prayers were made at the beginning of the fireworks display. It is said that the origin of the ceremony comes from the practice of beating drums when paying a visit to a shrine, and the beating of drums at festivals and Bon Odori. Fireworks festivals are held all over the country, and many people enjoy the colorful fireworks in the summer's night sky. The following are the dates of two fireworks displays in Tokyo.
