The "Ontake Kagura" passed down in Kiyokawa is said to have begun in Houtoku 1 (1449), at the same time as the founding of Ontake Shrine. This tradition has been handed down for many years, and Kagura in this lineage has spread across Ono, Nyu, the southern part of the prefecture, and as far as the Aso region. In 2007 it was designated a national Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property. We have held the Ontake-style Kagura Tournament since 1988 to reexamine this regional culture of Kagura born from Kiyokawa's local environment and to promote regional revitalization through Kagura. This event brings together the traditional cultures of each area.
