Introducing Takushoku Kinokotan, located inside Takushoku Bus’s Shintoku Office 😊 This tourist farm reuses sites once used by Hokkaido Takushoku Railway for its headquarters, rolling stock depot, and company housing on the line that ran between Shintoku and Kamishihoro. The name Takushoku Kinokotan is a coined word combining Takutetsu (short for Hokkaido Takushoku Railway), “kinoko” (mushroom), and the Ainu word kotan, meaning village. It reflects the desire to bring new life back to this once-bustling place. You can enjoy a hands-on shiitake harvesting experience grown carefully on logs using timber felled in Hokkaido. At the farm shop you can buy log-grown shiitake, Hokkaido Takushoku Railway and bus merchandise, and mushroom goods. There is also a display corner exhibiting historical materials related to Hokkaido Takushoku Railway 😍 Look for the red roof! The new soba season has begun. Since mid-August, two types of banners have been raised beside the soba fields along National Route 38 to promote the Shin-toku New Soba Festival by the PR campaigns “Soba Road” and “Soba Town Shintoku.” Until the Shin-toku New Soba Festival, the 1.3 km stretch with soba fields buzzes with activity. 🚩 The 2025 harvest of new soba is already being carefully gathered by producers. You can taste the new soba at the Shin-toku New Soba Festival, and local soba restaurants in town will also be serving new soba at this time. Beyond packing the charms of the three towns along National Routes 38 and 274 into one booklet, each town is color-coded for easy viewing, and you can catch detailed information by scanning the QR codes on the pages. Sahoro] ・Access is possible from the Karikachi Pass trailhead; parking is available. ・Residual snow on the trail has disappeared. ・Trail mowing has been completed, but sections where sasa bamboo overhangs remain; beware of ticks. ・A mountain hut is available at the summit without reservation. Secret Garden Starting from Shintoku Station, if you head toward Shintoku Hireya, you come upon a lovely garden. This is a private residence, but the owners said, “We want not only the people of Shintoku but many others to come and see it,” so I paid a visit. The garden is full of the owner’s love for flowers, affection for Shintoku, and memories of a loved one. However, a while ago some rose saplings were dug up and stolen, which was very sad. They may have been plants tended with great care, and above all they may have held deep sentiment. I don’t think anyone who reads this post and comes by would do anything hurtful, but since this is a private home, please view the garden respectfully. If the owner or the gardener is working in the yard, say hello and they may show you their lovely inner garden. If no one is there, please enjoy looking into the inner garden from the outside. Climbing hydrangeas in bloom at Karikachi Kogen Park From mid-June to early July, an estimated several hundred climbing hydrangea plants wind around the larch plantation trees in Karikachi Kogen Park, creating a beautiful sight. The cream-colored flowers, about 5 mm in size, bloom in clusters, making the larch trees look as if they are wearing dresses. The usual peak season is early to mid-July, but the warm temperatures likely caused them to bloom all at once this year. Bicycle rentals are available at the Shintoku Town Tourism Association counter on the 2nd floor of the Shintoku Station Community Center "Tokutoku." The ride from "Tokutoku" to Karikachi Kogen Park is about 10 km (approx. 40 minutes). From SL Square, take the Poppo Road — it's a steady uphill all the way to Karikachi Kogen Park, but on the return you'll enjoy a fast downhill ride with the wind at your back 🚲 For those who are reasonably fit and want to enjoy active, slightly adventurous sightseeing, please use our rental bikes. When I walk around town, I see many different flowers. This time, I found a lily of the valley. Lily of the valley is one of Hokkaido’s representative flowers, and the native species reportedly grows wild in the highlands of Tohoku and Hokkaido. About a dozen small, white, bell-shaped flowers hang from a single stalk. This flower is fragrant, and after blooming it produces a spherical fruit that ripens red, but all parts of the plant are poisonous, so caution is advised. The flowering season is May to June, so I hope they will still be in bloom through the end of this month. An opening event for the Tokutoku Community Center, located next to Shintoku Station, will be held starting at 10:00 AM on Sunday, June 15. The JTB special train “Tabimonogatari” has arrived! The JTB “Tabimonogatari” has made a stop here for three consecutive years since Reiwa 5. This year too, we welcomed guests on the station platform with about 34 minutes of hospitality. 🚃 About 60 guests enjoyed Shintoku soba tea, two kinds of soba-yu (rich soba-yu and dashi-infused soba-yu), and soba karinto, and we sold a limited assortment set. Afterward, guests took photos on the platform and in front of the station’s photo frame, and enjoyed shopping at the station shop. More than ten groups posed at the “Soba Red Photo Frame” installed immediately to the left after exiting JR Shintoku Station. At the station shop, the soba karinto offered for tasting proved so popular that it sold out. When we spoke with guests returning to the platform, we heard happy remarks like “It was very delicious” and “It goes well with tea,” with people holding soba karinto. We bade them farewell, hoping they will stop by again next year. A short announcement. The “Soba Red Photo Frame” in front of the station is not a face-in panel, but you can pose as if you are eating soba noodles. Introducing the kiosk inside Shintoku Station, Stella Station We sell souvenirs from Shintoku Town, drinks, snacks, and more, and we also offer something called a “Children’s Ticket” at the register. With the tickets we bought, children can exchange them for dagashi (cheap snacks) or drinks. They are for students up to high school and are handy as a snack before school or outings, or for when mom or dad won’t buy snacks (laughs). Here’s how the children use it: First they draw a ticket fortune (omikuji), then exchange it for a ticket, choose dagashi and drinks up to the amount shown on the ticket, and have the staff at the kiosk confirm the total is within the limit. Finally, the children write a thank-you message. These messages are displayed densely under the Stella Station sign, so please take a look. Watching this, I noticed some kids giving a piece of candy to friends with smaller amounts or pooling tickets with friends to get snacks together, and I was impressed by their friendship and thoughtfulness. Seeing the children, I bought a ticket with the coins in my wallet. I felt like I’d done a small good deed (laughs).
