Takaokain Temple Kin-chan Cherry Tree Planting Festival On Sunday the 14th, with the slogan "Let’s create a new cherry blossom spot in Isehara!", Ito En sponsored the planting of five cherry trees: a married pair named "Kin-chan Sakura" and "Sumi-chan Sakura," plus three weeping cherry trees. At Takaokain (Sannomiya 682), where a hall enshrines a statue of Jomoku Daibenzaiten named in memory of Kin-chan’s late wife Sumiko, a commemorative stone monument bearing words from Kin-chan and Tsutomu Sekine stands. Also present that day was Kinichi Hagimoto, known as Kin-chan, who had just turned 83 on May 7. In the talk show he generously shared his trademark Kin-chan stories, including memories of his late comedy partner Jiro Sakagami from Konto 55, and he readily signed autographs and posed for photos.

Goma is a esoteric Buddhist ritual in which wooden votive sticks are cast into the flames on a platform to dispel misfortune, purify wishes, and pray for the fulfillment of great aspirations. At Oyama-dera, a special annual event (typically held on February 28) features the Five-Platform Goma practice. For the Five-Platform Goma, five altars are set up before the Five Wisdom Kings, with a brazier placed in front of each altar. Offerings such as milkwood are burned as worshippers pray to the principal deity. The fire of wisdom burns the fuel of earthly desires as participants pray for good health, increased blessings, and deep respect and affection. This ceremony draws many worshippers from afar and fills the temple with the bustle of continuous goma fires throughout the day. Nationwide, goma performed on five platforms is a rare sight. While the Five-Platform Goma is an annual special event, regular goma prayers are held daily and offer a precious experience open to anyone. In the solemn atmosphere of mountain-shrouded Oyama-dera, you can spend a moment of spiritual cleansing. Away from the noise of daily life, taking part in the goma ritual purifies body and mind and lets you return to everyday life with renewed spirit. Alongside the temple’s reverent atmosphere, this valuable opportunity brings peace and refreshment to the heart. Anyone may join, so you are welcome to make your request casually.

[Isehara Flower Report] 3.01 Okame cherry blossoms along Oyama Shinmichi are beginning to bloom March starts today. I felt the arrival of spring as graduation ceremonies seemed to be taking place at high schools across Isehara City. Spring news is coming from MtOoyama too♪ Okame cherry trees have been planted along the roughly 3-kilometer stretch of Oyama Shinmichi (bypass), and pink blossoms are beginning to open. The trees at the foot are still young, so their trunks are thin and they seem to bloom earlier. Overall, it feels like flowering is a little early this year due to warm temperatures. They should reach their best viewing next week. Seeing the flowers from the car window makes a drive more enjoyable.

Isehara Flower Report 2024.02.02 Plum Blossoms - Hinata Yakushi…starting to bloom - Sports Park…in full bloom - Maruyama Castle Ruins Park…in full bloom Under a chillier sky than yesterday, the red plum blossoms are proudly in full bloom. A beautiful weeping plum tree stands in the grounds of Hinata Yakushi, and its view beside the stone lanterns is very picturesque. There is a plum grove on the back hill. Small, charming white plum blossoms are beginning to appear here and there. I found plum trees on a slope inside the Sports Park. These are vivid pink red plums. Cherry trees surround them, making this a spot full of spring blooms. At Maruyama Castle Ruins Park, plum trees that appear over three meters tall line the area. Their overlapping petals are stunning. Some people were enjoying a stroll.

Setsubun Festival Tomorrow The festival will be held at three shrines in Isehara City. ・Lower Shrine of Oyama Afuri Shrine…Only for related parties and those who applied ・Sannomiya Hibita Shrine…Koban coin toss at 10:00, 12:00, and 15:00 ・Isehara Daijingu Shrine…Bean-throwing at 15:00 Oni out—fortune in! This ritual drives away evil spirits and prays for a healthy, happy year ahead. There is a tradition that eating as many beans as your age will bring good fortune. Lively bean-throwing ceremonies take place on the grounds of the three shrines in Isehara City. People dressed as the bean-throwing hosts line up on a temporary stage and, with calls, throw lucky beans all at once. The beans are packed in small bags with lottery tickets inside, and local children eagerly scramble to collect them. At Hibita Shrine, the demon-driving ceremony is a highlight and a traditional event. By the way, if you throw beans inside the house, don’t you sometimes find a bean you missed when doing the year-end big cleaning? For details, please see the Isehara City Tourism Association website.

Kururin House Valentine♡ ~News from Kururin House inside the station~ February starts today. At Kururin House inside the station, the Kururins welcome everyone in a Valentine mood. At the 2023 Dōkan Festival, Kururin marked 10 years since debut, and March 1, the city’s founding day, is celebrated as Kururin’s birthday. Kururin, the official image character of Isehara City, has become a true symbol of the town. He wears a top made from the traditional Oyama spinning top craft on his head. The bellflower mark on Kururin’s back represents the city flower, and they say touching it brings happiness. Responding to Isehara citizens’ fondness for Kururin, the tourism association has planned and proposed various products. The lineup now includes classic Pilot ballpoint pens, notepads and other stationery, nylon eco bags, pin badges, mugs and more. Kururin goods available only in Isehara make great gifts!

Isehara Flower Report January 22, 2024 Plum blossoms at Hinata Yakushi, Ugakubunko, and the General Sports Park …They are beginning to bloom. Plum trees across Isehara City are starting to flower. Perhaps due to the warm winter, they seem to be blooming earlier than usual. Their fragrance is lovely, and they let us feel the arrival of spring a little sooner. By the way, the wintersweet (roubai) also blooms this season with yellow flowers, but it belongs to the wintersweet family and is a different species from the rose-family plums. In any case, we look forward to seeing them in full bloom.

■ Mt. Ooyama / Oyama Cable Car / Daisenji Temple / Oyama Afuri Shrine
Mt. Ooyama, at 1,251.7 meters and part of Tanzawa-Ōyama Quasi-National Park, is one of the most popular hiking spots in the Kanto region.
In 2016 it was designated a Japan Heritage site.
From the summit you can see the Sagami Plain and even Tokyo’s skyscrapers on clear days, and the mountain is listed among Kanagawa’s 50 scenic spots.

・Oyama Cable Car
The Ōyama Cable Line, commonly called the Oyama Cable Car, is a 0.8 km cable car.
With large windows to enjoy Ooyama’s nature, it provides easy access toward the summit.

・Daisenji Temple
Daisenji sits on the mountainside and is also known as Mount Amefuri.
In autumn the maple trees flanking the stone steps to the main hall turn brilliant red, making it a famous spot for autumn foliage.
A “Momiji Festival” is held and draws many visitors.
There are four types of goshuin (temple stamps), including a striking gold-letter special edition.
[Access: Get off at Daisenji Station on the Oyama Cable Car, about a 3-minute walk]

・Oyama Afuri Shrine
Founded over 2,200 years ago, the shrine enshrines the three deities Ōyamatsumi no Ōkami, Ooi-Kazuchi-no-Kami, and Takaokami-no-Kami.
The main shrine sits at the summit of Mt. Ooyama, with the lower shrine located on the mountainside.
The view from Afuri Shrine Station on the Oyama Cable Car, which earned two stars in the Michelin Green Guide Japan, is a must-see when you get off the cable car.
[Access: Get off at Afuri Shrine Station on the Oyama Cable Car]

■ Hinata Yakushi
Officially named Hinatayama Hojo-bo, it enshrines a Yakushi Nyorai carved from a single block of wood and is one of Japan’s three great Yakushi temples.
Until the end of the Edo period it was called Mount Hyūga Ryōzen-ji and served as a center for Hinata Shugendo, where monks practiced ascetic training in this sacred area.
Every year in mid-September red spider lilies bloom around Hinata Yakushi and attract many visitors.

Hinata Yakushi offers many sights starting with the Kongorikishi statues along the approach.
The Hoden, built to store cultural properties, houses 23 historic Buddhist statues, including eight nationally designated items and two prefecturally designated items.
The Yakushi-do, the main hall with its thatched roof, is also designated as an Important Cultural Property of Japan.

■ Isehara Tounoyama Ryokuchi Park
The park and citizen green space together cover about 13 hectares, with trails and lawns where you can relax and enjoy nature at a gentle pace.
The well-maintained paths make hiking enjoyable and safe even for small children.

■ Mitakeen
This mikan orchard covers about 1 hectare and grows approximately 900 mikan trees.
Mikan picking season runs from mid-September to around February.
From mid-September you can pick early varieties such as Hinano-hime and Nitta No. 1, and from early October varieties like Miyagawa wase and Taguchi wase are available.

From spring through summer you can also enjoy barbecues and vegetable-harvesting experiences.
Because Mitakeen sits on the mountainside, on clear days you can enjoy views of Sagami Bay, Enoshima, and the Boso Peninsula.

The scene turned white before our eyes, and snow accumulation reached about 5 cm. Around 6:30 PM, the moment the snow stopped, the white veil cleared and the night view emerged. The town lights and snowy landscape looked beautiful, and visitors enjoyed taking photos. Some road surfaces may still be icy, so please watch your step and enjoy the view from Oyama.

Hatsuyakushi for Reiwa 6 Yesterday, the annual Yakushi event “Hatsuyakushi” took place and drew many worshippers. Around noon, cars lined up in the Hinata Yakushi bus stop parking lot and along Yakushi Forest Road, making passing very difficult. After turning back, I finally found a spot in the Bōchū parking lot and walked from the temple gate toward the main hall. An elderly man coming down stopped me with the words, "You’re late getting here; there’s no more rice porridge left," which made me pause. But seeing is believing. Since I had already started climbing, I hurried on. When I entered the main hall, they were indeed cleaning the rice-porridge cauldrons, so sadly I could not receive any this year. Still, even after the porridge distribution ended, worshippers kept coming, and Hinata Yakushi enjoyed a lively New Year.
