The “Thank You Nemuro Main Line” panel exhibition is now on display! A panel exhibition reflecting on the history of the Furano–Shintoku section, which will close on March 31, has opened inside Shintoku Station. The panels include a timeline tracing the line’s history from the 1900 opening of the Asahikawa–Shimofurano section, which marked the starting point for eastern Hokkaido, together with about 40 historical photos showing the railway and local scenery. Shintoku Station, which will be decommissioned at the end of this month, has drawn many railfans, and it was striking to see visitors studying the panels today.

Since the start of this month, Shintoku has unexpectedly enjoyed many springlike days, yet yesterday the town saw 45 cm of snow fall continuously. In an instant the town turned into a silver-white landscape. Also, Shintoku Ski Resort, which had been closed for lack of snow since February 14, will reopen from tomorrow. I spotted someone cycling across the Shikaribetsu Pass! They’re a university student from Kanagawa Prefecture planning to ride from Kushiro to Asahikawa over ten days. They’ll stay in hotels along the way but also plan to camp at times. I heard they’re riding with studded tires—ride safely and enjoy winter in Hokkaido until the end of the journey.

I visited Hokkaido Avant in Kutcharo, Shintoku Town. Sauna enthusiasts who had come from Tokyo, Kyoto, and Oita, including members of the Sauna Research Group from Tokyo, took turns cooling down after their saunas by plunging into a hole cut in the frozen lake. Shouts that sounded like cheers or excitement echoed across the quiet lake. After cooling down, they enjoyed a peaceful time on an ice carousel.

This winter saw large temperature swings in Shintoku town and snowfall was slow to arrive, but thanks to snow from late December through recent days we have managed to open safely. “Kyodo Gakusha and Friends Harvest Festival,” featuring dairy products made at Kyodo Gakusha Shintoku Farm, will take place in Higashinakano, Tokyo on Saturday, November 11 and Sunday, November 12. The festival will display products made at five Kyodo Gakusha locations across Japan, alongside items from supporters of Kyodo Gakusha. Calling all little train fans! 🚃 Starting Saturday, August 5th, and continuing for ten sessions, the "Takutetsu KiHa 112" model children's train 🚃 will run at JR Shintoku Station. The train is an original vehicle modeled on the Takutetsu KiHa 112 and will pull open-sided trolley cars along about 50 meters of track 🚞. ✌️ Children ride free; adults pay 200 yen. If you drive, the area in front of the station is currently under redevelopment, so please use the free parking lot on the north side of the station 🅿️🈚️.

These mountain bikes will make it easier and more comfortable to ride to destinations with unpaved paths, such as Poppo no Michi and Mt. Kitahiro Farm cares for about 550 dairy cows and F1 cattle, and we dropped by after hearing they wanted to offer a guided farm tour for visitors.👋 Mr. Kimura, who led the tour, showed us the milking area and the barns, and we even had the chance to bottle-feed a newborn calf.👀⤴️ Getting up close to animals you don’t usually see so near was a refreshing, out-of-the-ordinary experience✨ that had our staff buzzing with excitement‼️ The pet sheep and goats were adorable, too!🥰

⛰️ We carried out the annual red-lime marking on Mt. Tomuraushi. 🏔️ As part of the yearly effort to prevent hikers from getting lost, the Tomuraushi red-lime marking was conducted jointly by three organizations—the Hokkaido Police, the Shintoku Mountaineering Association, and Shintoku Town—with a total of 16 participants! We applied red lime powder at three locations, including the trailhead leading from the Kamuisankennai River up to Kamui Tenjo and the junction with Komadori-sawa. These are spots where hikers easily lose their way, so please be especially careful in these areas. Also! We found bear tracks during the activity! 🐾 If you are planning to climb, please take adequate precautions against bears so you can enjoy a safe hike. On your way back, please stop by Tomuraushi Onsen Higashi Daisetsu-so (東大雪荘)! ♨️ Thank you to everyone involved for your cooperation!

Hokkaido will begin shipping a variety of vegetables now, so we’re excited to see which peppers, root vegetables, and more will appear on the stalls! 💓 Wild mountain vegetables are also offered in summer, so be sure to check them out 👀👀. Also, from June 7, growers will sell seasonal vegetables 🌽, fruits like grapes and watermelon 🍇🍉, and homemade processed goods next to Wakafuji Bakery 🥐🥯🍞, so you can enjoy shopping and chatting with producers about the town and its produce—sounds fun! 😄 Wakafuji’s bread is delicious too! ✨

The past few days have been pleasantly warm and easy to enjoy. ☺️ Drawn out by the fine weather, I took a casual drive to Takketsu Kinokotan near the tourism association. 🚗💨 The wood that staff had been diligently inoculating with spores since last year has, surprisingly 👀, already produced shiitake mushrooms! ❗️ The greenhouse isn’t finished yet and the logs are still left out in the alley… Nature’s power is truly amazing. ✨✨✨ By summer the greenhouse will be ready and the shiitake will move in. 🚛 I’m looking forward to the autumn opening—one more thing to be excited about. 💓✨
