Kimobetsu Tourism Association
May. 25, 2023
Nice to meet you! We are the Kimobetsu Tourism Association. We would like to share the many charms of Kimobetsucho in Hokkaido with everyone watching Cool Japan videos. This is our first post, so we will briefly introduce Kimobetsu’s history, sightseeing spots, and local specialties. In future posts we will provide detailed information on events and hidden gem attractions, so please stay tuned. Kimobetsu has a long history and retains strong influences from Ainu culture. The town’s name comes from the Ainu word Kim-o-pet, meaning “river with many mountains.” As the name suggests, Kimobetsu is crossed by 41 rivers of various sizes, including the Shiribetsu River and Kimobetsu River. The town lies at the foothills of MtYotei, a 1,898-meter peak nicknamed Ezo Fuji for its resemblance to Mt. Fuji, and is a nature-rich town about a 1 hour 30 minute drive from Sapporo City. The annual average temperature is a relatively cold 5.9°C, and the area receives heavy snowfall—sometimes nearly 150 cm. The large day–night temperature swings create a fertile environment for agriculture, and crops grown here are shipped across Japan. Kimobetsu has developed into one of Hokkaido’s leading agricultural regions. In particular, asparagus is known as one of the places where commercial cultivation began in Japan. Its generous size, crisp yet tender texture, and natural sweetness are exquisite, so be sure to try it. Other recommended souvenirs include high-quality Baron potatoes and sweet corn. At Nakayama Pass, Roadside Station Boyou Nakayama offers specialties like age-imo (deep-fried potato) and a restaurant serving dishes made with local ingredients, as well as a shop selling regional products. From Kimobetsu Town Park you can view both MtYotei and MtShiribetsu and fully experience Kimobetsu’s great outdoors. Kimobetsu also actively operates an empty house bank as part of municipal initiatives to encourage relocation. This program makes effective use of vacant homes in town and is available to people hoping to move here, settle permanently, or stay regularly, contributing to local revitalization. If you are considering relocating to a place with abundant nature, please check Kimobetsu’s official website. Kimobetsu combines rich nature, tourist attractions, and history, and offers a sense of slow, peaceful time. You can find a pleasant respite away from the daily hustle and bustle. Unknown beautiful landscapes, new experiences, and fresh encounters await you in Kimobetsu, Hokkaido. We will continue to share Kimobetsu’s charms, so please come and visit Kimobetsu!

Went to Fukushima over the Golden Week holiday. On our first day we took a bus to Ouchi-Juku and had a great time looking at all the buildings and different shops. The negi soba soba with a large leek is famous there so my girlfriend ended up ordering that. She said it was a bit difficult to eat, but fun and tasted great. We also ended up trying a variety of different snacks in the area. The Age-Manju deep fried manju was really tasty and we actually ended up getting again later. I was able to take a photo from the famous photo spot at Ouchi-Juku as well photo #4. I only have an iPhone camera, so the quality isn't the best, but I'm happy with how it turned out. On the way back from Ouchi-Juku we returned via Yunokami Onsen Station and so we got to use the footbath that was attached to the station. It was a really great way to rest up after walking for so long. The station itself was also really photogenic, so I snapped a couple photos from the platform and between the railroad tracks. The hotel we were staying at for the night was in Aizu-Wakamatsu and on the way we found a nice little shop with a large akabeko cow outside and the staff was kind enough to take a photo of us with it. For dinner, we went to a place called Sassa 左雨 and had a really great time. We ended up talking to the owners for a bit and they were super nice. It was also the best tonkatsu I've eaten in my entire life. It was cooked tp perfection, and the dressing that came with the salad and cabbage matched perfectly with it. We probably ended up eating way too many fried foods but it was all really tasty. The next day we visited Tsuruga Castle. The castle was quite cool, but it was a bit more crowded than Ouchi-Juku. Considering it was Golden Week, it wasn't much of a surprise. Either way we had a great time. We started off going for a boat ride around the moat I got my daily exercise in, as I was rowing the whole time lol. After that we went up into the castle and were able to see a view of the city from the top which was pretty cool. There were also live performances going on in the field in front of the castle which were fun to watch. At that point it was about lunch time so we went over to the row of food stalls photo #16 and grabbed a bite to eat. There were shops selling all sorts of goods as well, so we spent some time window shopping. After Tsuruga Castle, we went to Oyakuen Garden 御薬園. We ended up sharing a green tea by the pond and relaxing for a bit which was nice. There were a lot of koi inside the pond and a variety of birds flying around as well, so the atmosphere was very relaxing. Photo #20 is supposedly the best view in the garden it was written on a sign so I snapped a photo of it. The photo doesn't do it justice, but it was a really incredible view. All in all, we had a really amazing time in Fukushima, but we definitely would like to visit again, as there's a lot we didn't get to do still. I really wanted to try an akabeko workshop but we didn't get the chance, which was a bit disappointing, but we still had a lot of fun, so I can't complain. I definitely recommend visiting Aizu-Wakamatsu if you have the chance!

Tomakomai Tourism Association
Apr. 21, 2023
Hello viewers of Cool Japan Videos, this is the Tomakomai Tourism Association. On this account, we’ll introduce the many attractive tourist spots of Tomakomai City, one of Japan’s leading industrial cities and the largest port town in Hokkaido. Tomakomai is very easy to reach: about a 90-minute drive from Sapporo City and about a 30-minute drive from New Chitose Airport. When you visit, rental bicycles are available, so we recommend touring while feeling the great outdoors on your skin. Now, let us introduce Tomakomai City’s proud sightseeing spots. ■ Mt. Tarumae Designated a natural monument of Hokkaido, this stratovolcano features a globally famous double rim. You can drive up to the 7th station, and from there it’s about a 50-minute hike to the summit, making it an easy climb to enjoy sweeping views and alpine plants. ■ Midorigaoka Park From the observation deck on the hilltop plaza, you can take in panoramic views of Tomakomai City. With fountains and flowerbeds, plus an athletics stadium and a rugby field, many people use it as an outdoor sports park. ■ Kin-Dainuma Park Centered on Lake Kin-Dainuma, which has a 1.6-kilometer shoreline, the park is surrounded by pristine nature. You can enjoy facilities year-round, including Arten, one of Japan’s largest auto campgrounds, a canoe base, a park golf course, and the Yunomi no Yu bathing facility. ■ Northern Horse Park A popular spot where visitors can interact with horses. You can experience horseback riding, guided pony rides, horse-drawn carriage rides, sleigh rides, riding lessons, the Happy Pony Show, and horse trekking. Next, we’ll introduce some of the popular local gourmet treats that are one of the pleasures of visiting Tomakomai. Tomakomai City boasts the largest catch of surf clams (hokkigai) in Japan, often called the king of shellfish. While they’re known as a premium sushi topping, in Tomakomai you can buy them casually. As a port town, there’s also plenty of seafood like salmon and atka mackerel, plus local specialties such as haskap berries, Tomakomai ramen, haskap-based sweets called yoitomake, Tarumae jingisukan (grilled mutton), and hokki curry—popular flavors you should try when sightseeing. We’ll continue to share many more recommended Tomakomai attractions that we couldn’t fit into this post, so please look forward to them!

[English/日本語] I heard that an onigiri shop with a signboard cat had opened a minute walk from nishi hachioji station, so I went there. The name of the shop is "OLEALL☆". Their additive-free, pesticide-free onigiri and brown rice chiffon cake were very delicious. Mikan, the cat manager, 19 years old!, was napping on the seat next to us! She was very cute😊Onigiri are very popular with international students. They often buy them at convenience stores, but they often purchase them without really knowing what is inside. Most onigiri are tasty, so they keep buying them again and again. Hello from Akkeshi, an oyster town in Hokkaido. Akkeshi = Akkeshi ⭕️ Akkeshi = Atsushi ❌ Akkeshi=Akke City ❌ A small town with a population of about 8,000. Although the population is small, the amount of oysters landed is No. 1 in Hokkaido Today I am milking the sea. 🦪🥛 Squeeze and bottle. This is surprisingly difficult. It takes time, but it can't be helped. Each grain is carefully bottled. Hand squeezing. Flush on the line like a major dairy manufacturer I want to pack it, but it's not liquid. Since it is a solid substance, it does not go that way. Free Rich Akkeshi Bay milk 🦪🥛 The diameter of the cap mouth is used to create a bottle feeling. Because it is not a very wide type There may be oysters that are a little difficult to remove? If the scallop is large, it will get a little caught. I'll be out soon. Well, that's it. Fun to look at, delicious to eat It is a product full of playfulness and contains serious raw oysters. 170g/10 tablets Akkeshi Town Hometown Tax Registered Product. I want to eat oysters from Hokkaido! When I thought about it, I went to Akkeshi Town. Milk from Akkeshi Bay is nutritious 💯 *This product is a raw oyster

[English/Japanese] There is a standing sushi bar in front of nishi hachioji station, a two-minute walk from the school. Its name is DARIME SUSHI. DARIME is written with the kanji for “forty-five.” They say it’s a secret word that sushi chefs understand. Standing soba is well known, but a standing sushi place is unusual. I went at lunchtime, and the customers were all women. Sushi is also popular with international students. Not only do they eat it, many choose sushi restaurants as their part-time jobs. As a result, they learn fish names before any other Japanese words. You’ll be surprised to find they know more about it than their teachers! [English/Japanese] Mitsuhashi, a shop specializing in kanro natto (sweetened fermented soybeans), is a 15-minute walk from the school. Kanro natto is a Japanese sweet made by simmering beans in molasses and coating them with sugar. Mitsuhashi’s kanro natto is handcrafted with great care and has an elegant flavor. When I mention kanro natto to international students, they all react to the word “natto” and make disgusted faces. Many foreigners dislike natto, but when I explain it properly, they all say they would love to try it. Because many Southeast Asian countries have bean-based sweets, they find kanro natto intriguing. Kanro natto is not sold during midsummer, so if you’re curious, visit before summer arrives. A 15-minute walk from the school brings you to Mitsuhashi, a specialty shop for kanro natto. Kanro natto is a wagashi made by simmering beans in molasses and sprinkling them with sugar. Mitsuhashi’s kanro natto is made very carefully and has a refined taste. When I tell international students about kanro natto, they respond to the word “natto” with unhappy faces. Many foreigners dislike natto, but if I explain it properly, everyone says they’d like to try it. Since Southeast Asia offers many bean sweets, kanro natto piques their interest. Kanro natto is not sold in the peak of summer, so if you are curious, try to go before summer.
