【Miyazaki Prefecture Gokase Towns Traditional Performing Arts】Usu Drum Dance The Usu Drum Dance, which is danced during the Great Autumn Festival of Gion Shrine, was Dedication on the 9th day of the 9th month of the lunar calendar in ancient times, so it is also called "Kunchi Odori" and has been danced for more than 400 years. It is said that it began when the Heike clan, who had been driven out of Kyoto and continued to wander in exile, danced in the village of Kuraoka on their way to the unexplored mountain village of Shiiba, while surviving the glamorous capital of Kyoto. The dance, which shows a dignified demeanor in elegance, remembers the hearts of the people of the capital and is Dedication to the annual autumn festival of Gion Shrine every year. < legendary thing>-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- In the first year of Bunji (1185), at the end of the Minamoto War, the remnants of the Taira family, who were defeated in the battle of Dannoura, escaped the pursuit of the Minamoto clan and continued to flee to the hinterland, reaching the village of Kuraoka, and on the way to Mt. Shiiba, they left the weak, women and children in the mountains near Kuraokanami due to the bad road in the deep mountains. In the second year of Genkyu, the Kamakura shogunate did not relent in its pursuit of the remnants of the Heike family, and ordered Nasu Daihachiro Munehisa to hunt down the clan that had fled to the Kyushu Mountains. It is said that Nasu Daihachiro's party, which entered the village of Kuraoka to go to Shiiba after receiving the order, realized that the Heike villagers who remained in Kuraoka had no will to fight, and held a dance of the Kuretsu Doshu to comfort them on the long journey, abandon the luxury of the winners, and take pity on the losers. ‐--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- It is said that the dance at the time described above became the basis of Kuraoka's Usu Drum Dance, and it remains in its current form after rising and falling with the times and moving several times. Dancing to the Drums and Hooks shows a dignified demeanor in elegance. In recent years, the Gion Shrine Usu Drum Dance Preservation Society has inherited the dance with the cooperation of children and Ujiko (shrine parishioners) of Gokase Nature School. Usu Drum Dance Date... October 9 of each year

【Gokase Towns, Miyazaki Prefecture Traditional Performing Arts】Kuraoka Gion Kagura Kuraoka Gion Kagura is a kagura Tradition that has been handed down to the Gion Shrine in Kuraoka, and it is said that it began with dancing in the wide garden of Koga Burei Shrine in the Enki ceremony. In the 2nd year of the Lunar Calendar and the 4th year of Juei (1185), the Heike Ichimon, who had been defeated in the Battle of Dannoura, made a series of escapes to the Kyushu Mountains, reached the land of Kuraoka, and then explored deeper into the mountains and penetrated into Shiiba. At this time, Kyoto's Kagura, Gagaku, Ise Kagura, etc., which were handed down by the Heike clan, were infiltrated by the traditional Kagura, and with the progress of time, it became a Kagura with a unique appearance. It is said that the tone of Kagura is made of Traditional Japanese straw raincoat trees growing in the unexplored area of Mt. Shiraiwa, stretched with Deer skins caught in Okuyama, Drums tightened at both ends with hemp ropes, flutes made by drilling holes in shinobamboo, and the elegant sound and strange investigation of the metropolitan tone by clapping hands became a unique Kagura rhythm and formed Kuraoka Kagura. In July of 2023 (Reiwa 5), the Kuraoka Gion Kagura Preservation Society restored this ancient Kagura Drum. Kuraoka Gion Kagura Schedule... It reflects the history and climate of each region and plays a major role as a Minamoto of regional vitality. Gokase no Araodori is said to have been started by Sakamoto Iga Mori Masayuki, the castle owner of Sakamoto Castle (upper reaches of the Mikasho River), to raise the morale of the warriors when they went to war during the Tensho year (1573~92). Later, in the Keicho year (1596~1615), his grandson Sakamoto Yamashiro Mori Irido Kyukaku decreed the Dedication to the guardian god Nikami Daimyojin (now Sankasho Shrine). At that time, it is said that the successor of the temple called "Shinbochi" was held at the funeral, and the monkeys kept in the temple were also sent to dance with him. One theory is that the dance was introduced from Sakamoto in Omi Province (present-day Shiga Prefecture), but according to the "Nichishu Takachiho Kokonbari Ranki" (Hyuga Local Historical Sources, Vol. 4), "The descendants of Sasaki Rokkaku Takayori of Omi defected to Takachiho and served the Mitai clan, and their descendants called themselves the Saho clan, the Sakamoto clan, and the Mazaki clan." However, the Sakamoto clan here is not the Sakamoto clan of Sakamoto Castle, but the Sakamoto clan of Kanegase from Mukaiyama, Restrooms available this is a Minamoto surname, not the Ōkami surname or the Fujiwara surname, but a separate lineage. The date of the rough dance... The fourth Sunday of September every year
