Atami Station Front Shopping Streets (Nakamise and Heiwa-dori) In front of Atami Station are two shopping streets, Heiwa-dori and Nakamise, where long-established shops with 60- and 70-year histories still operate. Unlike shopping malls, these streets gather small, quirky shops where you can experience a uniquely Japanese style of shopping. You will find restaurants, cafes, sushi bars, and dried-fish shops, along with souvenir stores stocked with specialties from the Izu Peninsula. Official goods featuring Atsuo, the mascot of the Atami Onsen Hotels and Ryokan Cooperative, are also available in various shops. Strolling while nibbling on a hot-spring manju bun is recommended. Atami Ginza Shopping Street Once the bustling heart of Atami, the Ginza Street drew many visitors to the town center. At the corner of the shopping street’s entrance intersection stands the Atami Chamber of Commerce & Industry, housed in a building that operated as a bank until 1975. Its solid, retro façade preserves the atmosphere of that era. Stroll down the Ginza Shopping Street and you’ll encounter sights unchanged from the past: dried fish hanging under the eaves, a coffee shop still running in Showa-era style, and long-established wagashi confectioners. Recently, the street has welcomed restaurants popular for seafood, cafes using local ingredients, sweets shops such as Atami Pudding, matcha at Atami Satori Main Store, the premium Mont Blanc shop Silk kiito, and gelato shops.
