As soon as winter arrives, a box of tangerines always appears in a corner of the living room. That five-kilogram box is usually eaten down to the last fruit by my family in less than a week. Datun Mountain in my hometown of Beitou District produces plenty of ponkan. Though the skin is thicker, the flesh is full and the sweet-tart balance makes them an essential offering during Lunar New Year rites. By contrast, Japanese mikan are small and charming, especially the SS size that you can pop into your mouth whole. I often realize, to my surprise, that I’ve already eaten more than ten. But my favorite is Obara Beniwase from Kagawa Prefecture. Its flavor closely resembles Beitou’s ponkan, with a perfectly balanced sweet and tartness that never grows tiresome. Both the peel and flesh of Obara Beniwase are deeper and redder than those of ordinary tangerines, and it is said to be the most vividly red citrus in Japan. The top grade is called Sanuki Beni, with sweetness over 12.5, followed by the excellent Kintoki Beni, with sweetness above 11.5. Sakaide City in Kagawa Prefecture is the main growing area for Obara Beniwase. Once, when I visited Shiramineji Temple, the 81st site on the Shikoku Pilgrimage, I stopped at an orchard at the foot of the mountain to pick tangerines. Looking at those glossy red-orange fruits in the sunlight awakened my appetite, and I ate several dozen at once, then brought home a large bag to enjoy slowly. Perhaps because of all that, the box of tangerines that inevitably appears in a corner of my home each winter is more than a seasonal symbol; it is a small warmth in my heart that bridges Taiwan and Japan and ties together memories and flavor.

I took this photo at Ritsurin Park during the autumn foliage season. A building appears across the pond, and a maple with red leaves fills the foreground, giving a strong sense of depth, so I pressed the shutter. It was a calming scene that warmed my heart. This fall I hardly got to capture autumn because of university exams and assignments, plus driving school, so Ritsurin Park was the only place I visited. It's an incredibly fun spot, though. I’m hoping to visit many different places next year.

This photo was taken at Ritsurin Garden in Takamatsu City, Kagawa Prefecture when the autumn leaves were at their peak. The crimson maple branches spread over the water like a cloak, and I captured the moment a sightseeing boat slowly passed through. Seeing the autumn colors reflected on the calm surface and the peaceful expressions of the passengers, I felt the gentle passage of the changing season. It was my second visit to Ritsurin Garden, and I was surprised to find that the scenery had changed dramatically since my first visit—two hours had passed before I knew it. I enjoyed seeing so many different scenes. Ritsurin Garden, where time drifts by in a tranquil space, felt so comfortable that I wanted to return.

Today I had the fortune to follow in the footsteps of local elders, experiencing a deep Shikoku ohenro pilgrimage by bus and on foot. We walked along several ancient ohenro paths from No. 86 Shido-ji Temple all the way to the final stop, No. 88 Okoji Temple. On this journey through time, the elder recounted, as if naming familiar treasures, the origins and stories behind the guideposts and ohenro graves. His vivid explanations seemed to make the long years layered on these old roads reappear before our eyes, turning the pilgrimage into more than just walking. In the past, when I hiked up the mountain, I used to take the path in front of the Ohenro Koryu Salon. This time, however, the elder first led us onto a little-known ancient trail that runs along the mountainside past the salon. Because few pilgrims use that old path, the ohenro graves along it have been preserved intact, serving as precious witnesses to history. Next, we turned to another ohenro route that winds by the river near a settlement. This stretch shows the clearest traces of changing times— as the settlement grew and new roads were built, some of the directional stone markers were relocated, leaving their inscriptions pointing inexplicably elsewhere. The elder’s on-site explanations linked all those originally puzzling “misplaced” changes together at once, allowing us to keenly feel both the fascination and the frustrations of history. Perhaps because of road construction and environmental changes, some of the ohenro graves that once lay scattered along the roadside and slopes were moved and gathered into one place. This ohenro journey was not only a physical walk but also a deep conversation of the heart with history.

Today I returned to Shōdoshima and visited Kankakei, famous for its magnificent scenery. After taking the ropeway to the summit station, I walked toward the observation deck that overlooks the Seto Inland Sea. The maple leaves had mostly withered and begun to fall there, but the real surprise came on the hike down the mountain. Along that winding trail, both sides still displayed layers of brilliantly red maple trees, letting you fully immerse yourself in the autumnal beauty. On the way down, we came across a signature piece from the 2022 art festival — the "Sphere of the Sky." Against the clear blue sky, the delicately perforated sphere stood out and blended perfectly with the surrounding nature, exuding remarkable artistic flair. On the return trip, we paused briefly at Shodoshima Olive Park. I ordered a coffee and watched the Seto Inland Sea sparkle in the distance, enjoying a moment of idle reflection. At that moment, a small detail caught my eye: the mailbox there was painted a fresh olive green. Framed by the sea and sky, that unique color popped, adding a distinct, refreshing touch to the trip. I hadn’t expected that visiting Shōdoshima again would not only let me relive past joys but also bring these unexpected delights and beauties, leaving many new and lasting memories.

The Setouchi Triennale had already ended in early November, but my first visit to the western islands of Awashima, Ibukijima, and Hondo Island still felt refreshingly new. Of the three islands, Ibukijima left the deepest impression on me. Ibukijima is best known for the tiny dried fish that form the soul of Sanuki udon broth. However, more moving than any local specialty are the artworks displayed in the island’s unique Idebeya (communal birthing house) ruins—most notably Tree of Ibuki. The Idebeya once served a function somewhat like Taiwan’s postpartum care centers. It is said that when a woman went into labor and the men of the household were out fishing, no one could stay home to care for her. So the community set up a space where expectant mothers could gather safely and focus on welcoming new life. The theme of Tree of Ibuki symbolizes a mother’s womb and a rebirth, a shedding of the old self. The idea is profound, and standing inside the installation, looking out through kaleidoscopic mirrors, the layered views are intoxicating, as if you have entered another soft, tranquil world.

【Shimanto City, Kochi Prefecture】Eat the river! Sweetfish! Eel! River shrimp! Gori! "Traditional fishing method" that is close to the Shimanto River Introducing the traditional fishing methods passed down by river fishermen in the Shimanto River. We will introduce the important culture of the river basin that is close to the river and appreciates the blessings of the river. 〇Traditional fishing method of the Shimanto River The traditional fishing method of the Shimanto River has been carefully passed down by Local river fishermen, and it continues to be a part of daily life, changing its shape little by little with changes in the environment. The bounty of the Shimanto River, such as sweetfish, eel, scampi shrimp, and aosanori, adds color to the family table every season, and is deliciously cooked by skilled chefs in Shimanto City to delight the taste buds of tourists. It is also processed in various ways and is popular as a Souvenir. 〇 Look at the river, eat the river If you take a leisurely stroll along the Shimanto River, you can see eels and scampi shrimp submerged in water from the Submersible Bridge. Depending on the season, you may meet people fishing for sweetfish in the river or fishing in riverboats. There may be a gori fishing device lined with stones on the riverbank, or the harvest of green nori is just taking place at the mouth of the river. If you take the time to look at the Shimanto River, you will encounter something "river and human activities". And at night, you can enjoy the Ingredients harvested by the contraptions you actually saw in the river at the restaurant. It is a different way to enjoy the "familiar" Shimanto River. 〇 Introduction of traditional fishing methods ・Fire fishing of sweetfish Set up nets to cross the river in advance, and wave a Bonfire from the top of the boat at night. Surprised by the raging band of flames, the sweetfish flees and is driven into the net. Nowadays, it is often done using LEDs, but the principle is a traditional fishing method that has not changed since ancient times. sweetfish are also caught in Other by various fishing methods such as casting nets and fishing. ・Scampi shrimp fishing If you look from the Submersible Bridge near the water's edge, you can see a series of PVC pipes evenly spaced. This is a fishing gear called "Korobashi" that collects scampi shrimp. In the past, it was made of wood, but over time it has changed to a Ingredients that is easier to handle. Standard scampi shrimp are brightly colored and eaten with karaage. In addition, it is useful as a Township taste, such as resembling a large raised cucumber. ・Eel fishing There are Styrofoam and plastic bottles floating in the river without streaming. This may be a landmark of Korobashi catching eels. Eels, which are sensitive to odors, do not enter resin contraptions, and wooden korobashi is still used even now. ・Gori fishing If the riverbank is lined with stones that dammed the water, it may be a gimmick for Gori's Noborio Toshiue fishing. In the Shimanto River, the juveniles of Numatitib are called "gori" and are popular as a taste of early summer from Spring. Standard is to eat it as karaage or tsukuni. 〇Things to be aware of Fishery rights are set for fishing in the Shimanto River. When fishing, it is mandatory to purchase a recreational fishing ticket. In addition, a fishing ban period has been established from the viewpoint of protecting Minamoto. Please be careful.

In September, a 16-inch mini velo crossed the Shikoku Mountains from Kochi to Matsuyama From Kochi, we passed along the Niyodo River, climbed a steep slope, climbed a steep slope, and finally reached the Shikoku Karst The scenery I saw there was so magnificent that I felt a sense of accomplishment that I was able to reach the ceiling of Shikoku with my own power, and I experienced an Impression that I will never forget for the rest of my life The karst terrain jutting out at an elevation of 1,400 meters on the border between Kochi Prefecture and Ehime prefectures seems to be somewhere else that is not Japan, but if you shift your gaze to the side, you will see steep mountains unique to Japan, reaffirming that it is Japan after all The contrast between the blue, white, and green that seems to symbolize summer, and the ridge that stretches endlessly from east to west Shikoku in the summer was the strongest And at night, I make dinner, spread out the shroud, and take a light nap At 10:00 p.m., I felt something and crawled out of the tent, and there was a starry sky everywhere I looked The Milky Way rising from the cloudless Shikoku Mountains It's only been a little over 20 years of my life, but it was the most beautiful Milky Way in my life I landed alone in Shikoku, carrying heavy camping equipment, riding a bicycle with small tires, and finally arrived at this place with a really tough feeling in the extreme heat, and this impression must have been the reason why I was so impressed I wonder if I will be able to encounter such impressions in the rest of my life. No, maybe I'm traveling by bicycle to meet people Rather than comfort, stability, and security, I want an overwhelmingly uplifting impression For that reason, I can't help but feel that I can overcome any difficulties on my own Because it is a Japan place, I want more people to experience everything that can be felt in the style of bicycle × travel

[Shimanto City, Kochi Prefecture] Only in Shimanto City!! “Salt-Seared Bonito” (Part 2) Following Part 1, Part 2 introduces recommended ways to enjoy the bonitos seared in Shimanto City that you can taste only here. 〇 Nakamura’s one-and-only “Traditional Salt-Seared Bonito” When people think of delicious food from Kochi Prefecture nationwide, the first thing that comes to mind is the seared bonito. Sprinkling salt or pouring sauce before searing is said to be a food culture unique to Kochi. Yet within the same prefecture, the style in central Kochi City differs greatly from that in Nakamura in the southwestern Shimanto City: Nakamura’s salt-seared method stands apart. Around Kochi City, the dish is a simple one of just sprinkled salt. In Nakamura, by contrast, chefs marinate the seared fish with proud house sauces featuring salt, vinegar, citrus juice, and other flavoring, letting the flavors meld. Nakamura’s traditional salt-seared bonito piles on heaps of condiments—onions, garlic and more—until the fish is nearly hidden. Those generous toppings don’t just look appetizing; they make nutritionally balanced combinations, so the dish is also excellent as a healthy choice. Nakamura’s traditional salt-seared bonito, found only in Shimanto City, carries an unshakable local food culture and history. Each restaurant crafts and serves its own proud version of this delicious salt-seared specialty. From the searing process to the way it’s eaten, the condiments and the sauces, every establishment applies its own ingenuity and care to its salt-seared bonito. In Shimanto City, you can enjoy as many distinctive salt-seared styles as there are restaurants. Would you like to go on a salt-seared tasting tour in Shimanto City and sample Nakamura’s traditional salt-seared bonito? 〇 Perfect match for salt-seared bonito: Shimanto Bu-chu Highball A perfect companion to Nakamura’s traditional salt-seared bonito is the Shimanto Bu-chu Highball, made with the locally grown “forbidden fruit” bushukan. It’s a standard menu item at izakayas in Shimanto City. The drink is ultra-refreshing from first sip to finish, with a crisp citrus flavor and a pleasant, moderate bitterness. Popular with both men and women, it pairs beautifully with food. Try Shimanto Bu-chu Highball with salt-seared bonito—you’ll likely get hooked after one sip. 〇 Shimanto-grown “forbidden fruit”—the bushukan Why call it the forbidden fruit? Bushukan is related to yuzu and sudachi but is an entirely different fruit. Once you taste it, ordinary vinegar-citrus fruits won’t satisfy—you’ll understand why it’s called the “forbidden fruit.” Its defining features are a clean, sharp acidity and a uniquely refined aroma. That elegant scent and tartness bring out the best in ingredients from mountains, rivers, and sea. Beloved by citrus fans across Kochi, the “kingdom of sour citrus,” bushukan has long been nicknamed the “king of sour citrus.” Beyond its flavor, the tree is very vigorous: once it bears fruit, it will yield abundantly each year from late August through early October with little care. While most citrus trees live for several decades, bushukan remains healthy and productive for over a hundred years. Bushukan is also resistant to disease and pests and grows vigorously without heavy reliance on pesticides, making it a safe, reliable crop. This rare bushukan grows only in Shimanto City and is not shipped widely across Japan—why not come taste it for yourself? How did you find this? Perhaps the appeal of salt-seared bonito and bushukan has whetted your appetite. Please enjoy salt-seared bonito and a Shimanto Bu-chu Highball when you visit Shimanto City.

【Shimanto City, Kochi Prefecture】You can only eat it in Shimanto City! !! "Bonito Tataki" (Part 1) Kochi Prefecture's "delicious food" is famous nationwide, and the first thing that comes to mind is "Bonito Tataki". Bonito is a well-known specialty of Kochi, but it is actually in season twice! This time, we will explain about bonito, which is loved by the people of Kochi Prefecture, in Part 1, the season and characteristics, and in the next part, Part 2, we will explain the recommended way to eat it that can only be tasted in Shimanto City. 〇Bonito season! First bonito and return bonito Bonito is a well-known specialty of Kochi, but depending on the fishing season (season), it is called "first bonito" and "return bonito"! This time, we will introduce two types of Bonito with different names, the seasonality, characteristics, and recommended ways to eat them unique to Kochi. 〇 First bonito with a light taste! Hatsubonito, which has long been loved as one of the seasonal ingredients of Spring, used to refer to the Bonito Landings at the beginning of the year because it has the word "first", but in recent years it has come to refer to bonito Landings in Spring ~ early summer. Bonito fry hatched from eggs migrate north on the Kuroshio Current in search of food around Spring and grow into adult fish. The bonito that is landed during this northward trip is "Hatsubonito". It is also called "ascending bonito". It depends on the place where the Landings is landed, but in Kochi, the season is mainly Spring ~ early summer (around March ~ May). The first bonito, which is in the prime of growth, has a refreshing and plump taste with a lot of transparent lean meat. It has a firm texture and little Bonito Aroma, making it easy to eat even for those who are not good at it. Hatsuboni, which is light and low in fat, is recommended to be made into Tataki, which can be eaten with a fatty skin. It is the season when the "Naka Village traditional salt tataki" eaten with plenty of condiments is delicious. We will introduce the "traditional salt Tataki of the Middle Village" in the next section, "It can only be eaten in Shimanto City!!"Bonito salt Tataki" (Part 2)! 〇 Return bonito with a rich taste! On the other hand, Bonito, which has traveled north in search of food, begins to move south (U-turn) in search of warmer waters as the water temperature drops when it arrives in southern Hokkaido. The bonito that is Landing during this southward trip is "return bonito". In Kochi, the season is around autumn (September ~ November). Returning bonito is fatty because it eats food many and Landings after it grows up, and it is also called "thick Bonito" and "fat Bonito". It has been loved as an autumn ingredient since ancient times. The flesh of the large-grown bonito is deep red in color and has a rich and whitish taste with fat near the skin. How was it? You may be wondering about Bonito. In the next Part 2, we will introduce "Bonito salt Tataki" that can only be eaten in Shimanto City!

Hello everyone! This is ♪ the Minami Town Tourism Association On July 19, 2025, the Hiwasa Umigame Museum Caretta, located in Minami Town, Kaibu District, Tokushima Prefecture, reopened after about two years of renovation work. Therefore, this time, we would like to introduce "Hiwasa Umigame Museum Caretta" to everyone! 【Overview】 Hiwasa Umigame Museum Caretta (commonly known as Caretta) is a Museum located in the Minami Town of Kaibu District, Tokushima Prefecture, and is one of the world's rare Museum specializing in sea turtles. Caretta, with the theme of "Coexistence between Nature and Man", opened in 1985. Its predecessor was the Hiwasa Town Water Museum, and its predecessor was the loggerhead turtle protection and breeding research activities by the Hiwasa junior high school Sea Turtle Research Group, Located in. The Hiwasa Junior High School Sea Turtle Research Group was established in 1950 with the aim of protecting and breeding loggerhead sea turtles that land and lay eggs on the Ohama Coast. At that time, there were no systematic research results on sea turtles, and there were not enough facilities in rural junior high schools in the immediate postwar period, so students at that time began to protect sea turtles in a semi-fumbling state. The students' trial and error over the course of about 10 years bore fruit, and the results of their research have been introduced in numerous magazines, and "Ohama Coast as a spawning ground for loggerhead sea turtles" has become famous throughout Japan. Finally, it was designated as a nationally designated natural monument as "sea turtles and their spawning grounds on the Ohama Coast," and the activities of Hiwasa in Minami Town were in the spotlight. In order to make these conservation and research activities more widely known to as many people as possible, the Hiwasa Umigame Museums Caretta was opened. 【Exhibit Contents】 As the museum's name derives from the scientific name of loggerhead sea turtles "Caretta caretta", the exhibition focuses on loggerhead sea turtles. Before the renovation, Caretta was an exhibition that mainly introduced the ecology of sea turtles. Even in this renovation, the exhibit introducing the ecology of sea turtles remains, but it has been reborn to introduce the conservation and research activities of Minami Town Hiwasa in more detail. As soon as you enter, there is an exhibition that covers the evolution of turtles and sea turtles, and in the passage that follows, you can see stuffed sea turtles of eight existing species and explain the ecology of each sea turtle. The next section focuses on loggerhead sea turtles that land on the Ohama Coast and explains in detail what kind of life loggerhead sea turtles lead on the Ohama Coast. Scenes of newborn hatchlings and one-year-old hatchlings swimming vigorously here. And in the next corner, there is an exhibition that looks back on the history of the activities of Minami Town Hiwasa, which is a major feature of this renovation. Why did the students of Hiwasa junior high school embark on loggerhead turtle conservation, how did they proceed with their research, and how did they come to be recognized by the public? You can learn about the history of sea turtle conservation that continues to the present day. At the end of the exhibition, you can learn how to protect sea turtles from modern environmental problems and how sea turtle conservation activities are carried out. In addition to this, there is a display exhibition of sea turtles designed by children in the Original swimming on the screen, and a corner where you can take a quiz about sea turtles. In addition, from the observation space on the 2nd floor, you can overlook the Ohama Coast in front of you. [Outdoor Exhibition] Outside the main exhibition building, there is a "large turtle pool" where adult loggerhead sea turtles swim leisurely. In consideration of an environment that is easy for loggerhead sea turtles to swim in, the indigo color scheme that is conscious of the seabed of the Nature and the streamlined pool without horns are created. It was also designed to be viewed from the side of the pool so that it is easy to observe them swimming and resting on the bottom of the water. Hamataro, one of the loggerhead sea turtles living here, was born in 1950 at Hiwasa Junior High School and has been bred ever since for the purpose of observing the life of the sea turtle, which is still a mystery. Hamataro, who turned 75 years old this year, holds the world's longest-lived loggerhead sea turtle record for which his age and individual have been reliably recorded, and he continues to break it. In addition to this, there is also a "Touch Pool" and a "Pale Water Turtle Pool" where you can interact with the creatures of the seashore, and the "Tatayo Umigame Museum" where you can observe swimming sea turtles from below. 【Umigame Shokudo】 Caretta has a "Umigame Shokudo" adjacent to the large game pool. Meals set meal, curry rice, and kamemonaka with ice milk are on sale, and you can enjoy them in the dining space. In addition, there is a side window of the large turtle pool facing the Meals space, and you can watch the sea turtles swimming gracefully while enjoying the food. Squid was it? The charm of Caretta presented here is only a small part. The charm of Caretta and the charm of sea turtles can only be felt with your five senses when you go to the site!
