A paradise for sweets lovers! "Ryugetsu Sweetpia Garden" This is an entertainment spot where you can buy sweets, enjoy a café, take hands-on experiences, and tour the factory✨ This shop sells "Sanporoku no Hajikko" at a bargain price every morning, and a line forms before opening. It comes in substantial portions, priced from 550 to 650 yen per kilogram! The shop-only "Kinagoromo Soft" is irresistible for fans of Japanese flavors, with wobbly kinako mochi and sweet red bean paste inside. In the eat-in area, you can enjoy azuki tea and coffee for free! The Sanporoku bench placed around the garden looks so real it almost seems edible 😋 The Roadside Station Otofuke Natsuzora no Furusato is right next door, so you can enjoy both places together!

[English/Japanese] Mitsuhashi, a shop specializing in kanro natto (sweetened fermented soybeans), is a 15-minute walk from the school. Kanro natto is a Japanese sweet made by simmering beans in molasses and coating them with sugar. Mitsuhashi’s kanro natto is handcrafted with great care and has an elegant flavor. When I mention kanro natto to international students, they all react to the word “natto” and make disgusted faces. Many foreigners dislike natto, but when I explain it properly, they all say they would love to try it. Because many Southeast Asian countries have bean-based sweets, they find kanro natto intriguing. Kanro natto is not sold during midsummer, so if you’re curious, visit before summer arrives. A 15-minute walk from the school brings you to Mitsuhashi, a specialty shop for kanro natto. Kanro natto is a wagashi made by simmering beans in molasses and sprinkling them with sugar. Mitsuhashi’s kanro natto is made very carefully and has a refined taste. When I tell international students about kanro natto, they respond to the word “natto” with unhappy faces. Many foreigners dislike natto, but if I explain it properly, everyone says they’d like to try it. Since Southeast Asia offers many bean sweets, kanro natto piques their interest. Kanro natto is not sold in the peak of summer, so if you are curious, try to go before summer.

[English/Japanese] I visited Soto Terrace, a spot that opened last November to promote Hachioji’s traditional culture. It is a seven-minute walk from Hachioji Station. You reach it by passing through a narrow street in the hanamachi district. I visited at night, so it was very quiet, but I heard it gets lively with events on weekends and public holidays. There is a charming shop where I bought some cute sweets. I’ll report on those sweets next time. Hachioji is an old town with many events and places that preserve traditional culture. [English/Japanese] The other day I bought a French pastry called Galette des Rois at Patisserie Tatsuya Sasaki, just a four-minute walk from Nishi Hachioji! It is well known in France as the cake eaten on January 6. The cake is not only delicious but also fun, since a small ceramic figurine is hidden inside and whoever finds it becomes king. What do you do for the New Year in your country? Most of our international students celebrate their New Year in February or April! They enjoy lively times, eating traditional foods from their countries and taking part in festivals. When a new year begins, you feel refreshed 😊 We wish you all a happy new year! Tengu-yaki (天狗焼き), a souvenir I bought on a field trip to Mt. Takao. It is shaped like a tengu, a yokai (a supernatural creature) said to live on Mt. Takao. I expected it to be filled with anko (sweet red bean paste), but it turned out to be mashed kuromame (black soybeans) — its subtle sweetness was delightful. Our school is at Nishi-Hachioji Station, near Takao Station. Nishi-Hachioji is on the Chuo Line, which connects to Tokyo and Shinjuku; it lies between Hachioji, convenient for shopping, and Mt. Takao, rich in nature. It was ranked first in the recently announced "Most Livable Cities" ranking. With many supermarkets and hospitals and low rent, it comes highly recommended 😊.

[English/Japanese] A 15-minute walk from Hachioji Station, I bought a “Hachioji Castle Monaka” at the Japanese sweets shop Senshuen. In fact, there was a castle in Hachioji in the 16th century. This “Hachioji Castle Monaka” is a confection shaped like the castle that stood then. The monaka is filled with sweet red bean paste and was delicious 😊 By the way, Hachioji Castle no longer exists, but the site where the castle once stood is now a park. I would like to visit it with my students someday. A 15-minute walk from Hachioji Station, I bought a “Hachioji Castle Monaka” at the wagashi shop Senshuen. [Englsih/日本語] Cafe Kojika is a 10-minute walk from Hachioji Station. The interior of Cafe Kojika is decorated in a 1970s style, so you can enjoy a meal inside an old Japanese house. Most items cost a single coin, and they were very tasty 😊 My top recommendation is the cream soda. You can have a juice made in your favorite color. Many international students want to try a homestay. However, because of the coronavirus, they have no chance to do a homestay, so I recommend this kind of old-house cafe to such students. A ten-minute walk from Hachioji Station, Cafe Kojika recreates a 1970s interior so you can dine in the atmosphere of an old Japanese home. Many menu items are priced at one coin, and the food was very good 😊 The cream soda is my number-one pick, and they will make a juice in whatever color you like. Many exchange students are eager to experience homestay life. But with the coronavirus preventing homestays, I suggest this sort of traditional house cafe to those students.

[Englsih/日本語] Stopped by Cerian, a confectionery shop a minute's walk from the school, and found the now rare "raccoon dog cake! I didn't hesitate to buy it 😊"Tanuki Cake" is a raccoon-shaped cake that became popular about 40 years ago, and it is even said to be an endangered species, as there are fewer and fewer stores making this cake these days. I was very impressed by how carefully the raccoon's face was made. [English/Japanese] Do you know "Miyako Manju," the soul food of Hachioji? At 30 yen a piece, you can buy these manju near Hachioji Station. Their affordable price makes them popular with students. They have a gentle sweetness and taste very good. The shop is locally rooted and even collaborates with a nearby university, and the manju designs often change, so you can enjoy them while having fun. You should definitely try them 😊. Visited Shibamata for the first time over the weekend. I'd been meaning to go for a while because it seemed like an interesting place to visit in Tokyo, but I just hadn't had the chance until now. It was a really nice place and I was surprised at how few people were there. There was a ton of shops lined up along the main street and the wooden buildings gave it a really nice atmosphere. I haven't seen Otoko wa Tsurai yo, but there were statues and posters of Tora-san everywhere, even inside shops and stuff. I guess I'll have to watch it some time when I have the chance. We ended up eating lunch at one of the restaurants along the main road and they had some Tora Miso Ramen so we decided to try it. It was pretty good and had a decent amount of vegetables in it as well, so moderately healthy for ramen I suppose. We also got some dessert at a cafe afterwards and she got some dango while I ordered an ice cream float. We also went to the nearby temple Shibamata Taishakuten 柴又帝釈天, or Daikyoji Temple and walked around the main temple grounds and also bought tickets to see the garden and the architecture inside the temple. The garden was really pretty and the walkway around it was quite nice to walk on. I really enjoyed viewing the inside of the temple as there was a ton of hand-carved panels depicting different scenes. There were descriptions below each of the panels that described them as well, and they were interesting to read. It seemed like they were all carved by different people but they were all highly skilled. When we were leaving we found a nice little shows style candy shop and we bought some snacks and played a round of pinball on one of the pinball machines inside the shop. Haven’t played pinball since I was a kid, was pretty nostalgic. If you're in Tokyo I definitely recommend giving this place a visit on the weekend.

Went down to Takamatsu over the 3 day weekend last week. It was the first time either one of us had been to Shikoku before and it was a lot of fun. I'm surprised it's not talked about more, as there's so much stuff to do. We stayed near Takamatsu pretty much the whole time and we still didn't get to visit every place that we wanted to go. The first day mostly consisted of Ritsurin Park. The park garden itself was quite large and there was a lot of beautiful sights to see. We really wanted to go on the boat ride throughout the park's pond, but unfortunately it started to rain just a tiny bit and they closed the boat for the rest of the day, just before we arrived... ☔️ Even still we had a lot of fun walking around the park. There were a lot of koi and turtles swimming in the pond too. We stopped by a small cafe-like building inside the park and i got an ice cream float and she got a coffee. In front of the shop one of the custodians came by with a big bucket of fish food and created a feeding frenzy amongst the koi. I'm pretty sure I saw a single catfish in there as well. After we finished our drinks we climbed to one of the best viewing spots in the park which had a really amazing view of the bridge and the pond. You can see the people on the boat we didn't get to ride too lol🥲 The one building shown in photo 9 was actually a tea house where I think you could try traditional tea ceremony and eat sweets as well, but they also seemed to offer just a normal tea drinking experience as well. We decided not to try it, but if you like tea ceremony it looked quite nice.

Dropped by a cafe near Oji Station the other day and ordered a small chocolate cake and a tea. It looks strikingly similar to the one I had at the pasta restaurant a few days ago, with very minor differences lol. I didn't take a photo of the tea unfortunately, I was too focused on eating the cake😅. I suppose it's a popular dessert combination as it seems quite easy but delicious at the same time. The cafe is called Dining Cafe Tagen ダイニング カフェTAGEN. When I passed it on Halloween they were opening the large doors at the front of the shop and preparing some sort of Halloween event, although I wasn't able to see exactly what was going on with it. They had a big speaker as well, so maybe they were going to sing and give candy away lol. I'm not really sure though. I think they were wearing costumes as well, it looked pretty interesting. It's a nice place though. It can be a bit cramped at times but otherwise it's a nice place to go for a coffee and dessert if you're in the area. You can also take the streetcar Tokyo Sakura Tram to get there as well which is a plus!

Went and had some pasta at a small cafe called Abbraccio the other day. I got a cream and mushroom sauce penne which tasted great. The salad was served with a small slice of bread which complimented it quite well. The desert was really simple but tasted excellent. Just add a bit of the whip cream I think it's whip cream anyways and the what I thought was cherry sauce and it a great way to finish the meal. They had a PayPay campaign going on as well and we managed to get a 50% discount and only ended up paying ¥700 per meal, which was pretty incredible considering we got the drink sets as well, which unfortunately aren't pictured here, but I ordered a chamomile tea I believe. Or something similar to that. It was also quite refreshing. The place seems to have a couple of balcony seats as well but I'm not sure if you have to request them or reserve them or what, but by the time we noticed them we were already seated so we decided not to ask. Overall it was a pretty good place and the service was good as well
