Our Village Beautification Project
Saturday, June 14
We carried out our annual Our Village Beautification Project.

Everyone from local businesses to nursery children and adults planted marigold seedlings along the roadside.

About an hour before the meeting a heavy rain shower passed,
and after it stopped the temperature and humidity gradually rose,
so it was the kind of day when you worked up a sweat.

Some people dug holes, some placed pots, and some buried the seedlings…
we divided the tasks and diligently planted flowers in our assigned areas.

Under the flag celebrating the village's 100th anniversary,
neatly planted marigolds and pansies are once again brightening the road this year.

May they grow tall and strong.

White Pig Falls

This season can easily bring people down, so let’s find small joys and keep our spirits up 💪✨

Planting in a Large Pot

In Nishiokoppe, Sato Yuka of onesmanorgarden, who has become a familiar face here, was invited as the instructor for a container-planting workshop!

This time, the plan was to display the arrangements at village facilities, so we planted as many as 15 kinds of flowers and foliage in a large pot.

Unlike the gathering-style design we learned last year, container planting simply involves removing plants from their pots, arranging them in the planter, leveling the soil, and the arrangement is finished in no time.

Before taking them out of their pots, we first laid them out to expand our ideas.

Because the pot has a pattern, we imagined which side might be the front and how to make the arrangement attractive from every angle, then decided on the placement.

Once the image was clear, we planted from the center outward and built the surrounding heights to match.

If the soil surface is not even, water will collect in the low spots when you water, or so we were told.

As I planted each one, I filled gaps with soil as needed and continued working.

Experienced participants, even with large pots, finished their arrangements in about 30 minutes with a flurry of activity.

The finished pots are installed in both Kamiokoppe and Nishiokoppe.

Although each pot used the same materials, individual personalities shine through, so it might be fun to compare them.

This is "Ebisu Cave"!

Located about 1.5 kilometers north of the Ohama Coast and about 5 minutes by car, Ebisu Cave is a large sea erosion cave.
As a result of the erosion of the interior of the Iwayama (rocky mountain) at an elevation of 52 Meters jutting out into the Pacific Ocean, a large semicircle with a diameter of 30 Meters and a depth of 40 Meters opened up.
The cave is inhabited by the "Rock Swallow", which is designated as a "town bird" and is a town-designated natural monument.

At the top of the Iwayama (rocky mountain)Observation decks and you can see the majestic Pacific Ocean, and beside it is the Ebisu-dong Shrine, which prays for the happiness of husband and wife.

Fukkoji Hydrangeas
❚ Bloom Update as of June 20, 2025
Fukkoji Temple sits in Asaji Town, Bungo-Ono, Oita Prefecture. It is also famous as a hydrangea sightseeing spot.
The hydrangeas are now just past their peak viewing period.
This year there are fewer blooms than usual, but they are blooming beautifully.
Temperatures exceeded 30°C several days this week, so some hydrangeas look tired, but the later-blooming ones are flourishing.
We will keep posting bloom updates.

❚ Fukkoji Temple
The bas-relief Buddha carved into the temple grounds, including its pedestal, stands about 11 meters tall and is one of Japan’s largest cliff carvings. The central colossal figure is Fudo Myoo (the Immovable Wisdom King). Fudo Myoo normally appears with an angry expression, but years of wind and rain have rounded his features into a gentle face. Despite his size, this Fudo Myoo has a very approachable presence.
Fukkoji is also known as “Hydrangea Temple” because so many hydrangeas are planted there. During the rainy season you can see many hydrangea blooms alongside the bas-relief Buddha.
The hydrangeas are cared for by the temple and local community.

Making seabed Aged wine on a sunken ship|Special tour Held in in Higashi-Izu and Irisawa!
Hello, I'm Hokule'a Shonan!
This time, we successfully held in 😊 our special project, "Making Aged Wine on the Sea Floor in Sunken Ships"

This time, the wine was sunk in a sunken ship at a depth of -24 meters in water in Irisawa in Higashi-Izu.
In fact, it is said that the origin of "seabed Aged wine" is an old wine that was accidentally discovered in a sunken ship.
The swaying waves, the quiet environment, the shading and the constant water temperature created an ideal aged environment for the wines.

We Reproduction the "Submarine Cellar" this time!
The specially prepared bottles were sealed with sealing wax and the carefully prepared wine was transported to the sea.
The space inside the wreck is "just the right size" as if it was prepared for this wine.
The scenery peeking out from the side was truly fantastic, and it was a scenery that made me feel somewhat "romantic".

Katori Shrine stands quietly amid the rice fields of Azumino, with the graceful ridgeline of the Northern Alps stretching behind it.
The mountain, shaped like Mt. Fuji, is Mt. Ariake, also called Shinano Fuji.
Today, temperatures in Azumino rose nearly to a scorching summer level as the area soaked up strong sunlight.

Katori Shrine sits in the heart of the countryside, with the beautiful ridgeline of the Northern Alps unfolding behind it.
The mountain with a Fuji-like silhouette is Mt. Ariake, known as "Shinano Fuji."
