When you think of autumn events, leaf peeping comes to mind. Spotting colorful leaves while out and about is lovely, but why not take the time to visit a scenic spot with a spectacular view? The best time to see autumn leaves varies by region, but it’s generally from late October through early December. The most striking displays usually appear around mid-November.

I went to the Ōmiya area for work today.
I had hot apple cider and a white mocha cake.
They smelled pleasantly of apples. 😊

The autumn leaves dyed both the trees and the ground red, creating a beautiful scene. Although the park rarely sees many visitors, I photographed how the wooden rest area—seemingly built to warmly welcome the occasional guest—perfectly matched the autumn foliage.

I stand quietly under the autumn tree,
a lonely bicycle waiting for my rider’s return. Fallen leaves wrap around my tires like a rusty blanket, and I breathe in the gentle pause between journeys.

Yusaku Park, located in Asaji Town, Bungoono City, Oita Prefecture
It is one of Oita Prefecture’s representative autumn leaf viewing spots.

Overall, the foliage is about 70% along. The area around Shinji Pond should be at its peak this week. Areas farther from the pond are also progressing in color. You can enjoy a palette of green, yellow, and red leaves, which are beautiful. Some trees are already starting to shed leaves that flutter in the wind, but on sunny days the colors look especially vivid. Why not head out to Yusaku Park and be wrapped in autumn hues?
During the Yosaku Tourism Momiji Festival, local residents sell kusa-mochi (grass rice cakes) and other treats. If you see them, try one while you can.
We will continue to provide updates on the foliage status.

The Yusaku Park light-up runs through this week, from November 21 to 23. Some paths are dim at night, so we recommend bringing a flashlight.

The season of the sea of fog has arrived ✨

When you think of Miyoshi City in Hiroshima Prefecture, you can’t help but think of the sea of fog.
As autumn deepens and mornings and evenings grow colder,
this is truly the perfect time to see it.

The whole town becomes wrapped in white mist,
and a quiet moment passes as if you were above the clouds.

To enjoy the sea of fog, start with the classic Mt. Takatani.
From the observation deck you can watch the fog drift slowly
as the morning sun gradually breaks through.
One of its charms is how different it can look from day to day.

If you prefer a relaxed view in nature, head to Okadayama.
From the top of the mountain the fog spreads to the distant peaks,
creating a calm, sea-like panorama.

At Mount Tomishi,
the contrast between the sea of fog and the ridgeline is striking.
Depending on the day’s weather and the light,
it reveals an entirely different face.

The sea of fog is a special sight that appears only on mornings when the weather conditions align.
That’s why the joy of encountering it is all the greater.

It takes about two to four hours for the sea of fog to clear.
The scene of the fog lifting is lovely in its own way.♪

On a chilly morning, set your alarm a little earlier and come to Miyoshi.

Christmas Wreath Making
Onesmanorgarden, which designs and builds gardens, invited garden planner Yuka Sato as an instructor to host a fun hands-on crafting session.

What we made was a Christmas wreath using eucalyptus leaves and other foliage.

In April we made wreaths from dried hydrangeas, but this time a row of fresh, live leaves was laid out.

Surrounded by the scent of nioi-hiba, we first trimmed long branches into shorter lengths.

From there we made the components to attach to the ring, glued them together, and tied them onto the ring with wire.
We repeated that process over and over until the ring was covered.

The steps are very simple.
However… from start to finish you have to keep the volume consistent, bundle while considering the balance of leaves and berries, and skillfully fill in gaps so none remain.

It really makes you think.

Our fingertips turned dark from the leaf oils as we worked in silence, and after about three to four hours we finished a lush, full wreath!

Adding gold or silver pine cones and wrapping ribbons changed each piece’s final impression during the finishing touches.

Participants took their finished works home and seemed to hang them on walls and elsewhere in their homes.

As time passes and they dry, their color and texture change.

It was a project that let us enjoy qualities different from dried pieces.

The Setouchi Triennale had already ended in early November, but my first visit to the western islands of Awashima, Ibukijima, and Hondo Island still felt refreshingly new.

Of the three islands, Ibukijima left the deepest impression on me.

Ibukijima is best known for the tiny dried fish that form the soul of Sanuki udon broth. However, more moving than any local specialty are the artworks displayed in the island’s unique Idebeya (communal birthing house) ruins—most notably Tree of Ibuki.

The Idebeya once served a function somewhat like Taiwan’s postpartum care centers. It is said that when a woman went into labor and the men of the household were out fishing, no one could stay home to care for her. So the community set up a space where expectant mothers could gather safely and focus on welcoming new life.

The theme of Tree of Ibuki symbolizes a mother’s womb and a rebirth, a shedding of the old self. The idea is profound, and standing inside the installation, looking out through kaleidoscopic mirrors, the layered views are intoxicating, as if you have entered another soft, tranquil world.
