Taishaku Gorge ❚ Oita Bungo-Ono Geopark Located in Ogata Town, Bungoono City, Oita Prefecture, Taishaku Gorge is a scenic area surrounded by cliffs of welded tuff with developed columnar jointing, stretching along the Okudake River. The rock walls on both sides rise about 70 meters high, creating a majestic and impressive landscape in conjunction with the clear blue river flow. Taishaku Gorge is a canyon formed by the erosion of welded tuff created by a massive eruption of Mount Aso 90,000 years ago, with the Okudake River gradually carving it over a long period. The valley floor exposes rocks formed by volcanic activity around 15 million years ago, allowing visitors to closely feel the geological history of the area. It is also known as one of the geo-sites of the Oita Bungo-Ono Geopark, attracting attention for its natural landscape and geological value. Additionally, slightly upstream, there is a cave where charred wood, baked by pyroclastic flows, is buried, preserving traces of volcanic activity. Walking along the promenade brings visitors closer to the riverside, allowing for a more intimate experience of the rock faces, the tranquil air of the gorge, and the clarity of the water, which are all part of the charm of Taishaku Gorge. In summer, the clear waters present a refreshing landscape, while autumn brings colorful foliage to the gorge. With its varying expressions throughout the seasons, Taishaku Gorge is one of the representative natural landscapes of Bungoono City, and it is a spot that many people should visit. 【Location】Ogata Town, Bungoono City, Oita Prefecture, Kobara 【Access】About 20 minutes by car from JR Ogata Station 【Parking】Available 【Restroom】Available ■■■Access to the center of Bungoono City■■■ About 3 hours by car from JR Hakata Station, Fukuoka Prefecture About 2 hours by car from JR Kumamoto Station, Kumamoto Prefecture About 1 hour and 20 minutes by car from JR Beppu Station, Oita Prefecture About 1 hour and 20 minutes by car from JR Yufuin Station, Oita Prefecture ■■■■■■■■■■■■ Kyushu, introducing recommended spots in Bungoono City, Oita Prefecture ■■■■■■■■■■■■

Today is Tanabata, a traditional Japanese festival that has its origin both in romance and the stars. Many people may already know the details of the (literally) star-crossed romance of Orihime and Hikoboshi, but the unique celebration of Tanabata can give you a rare chance for a look into the hearts and minds of the often quiet and reserved people of Japan. The main custom of Tanabata is writing wishes on a slip of paper called a Tanzaku and tying it to bamboo. The wishes, on paper of various colors, look lovely and festive as they hang in public places. It is fun to write your own wish and hang it to join the others, and since it is all anonymous, you can participate even if you are shy! For me, the most interesting part is seeing what other people wish for. It is a rare moment of vulnerability and openness, seeing wishes to find love, the success loved ones, health and happiness. (I once saw someone make wishes for stock trading, so it isn't all sentimental!) It can be a revealing look at the wishes and desires of people who would otherwise almost never voice these sentiments openly. All in all, it is heartwarming and makes me feel closer to my fellow man, which in its own way is its own vision of love to set alongside Orihime and Hikoboshi's tale. As a bonus, the Japanese of tanzaku wishes is usually short simple, making it good for study. If you are in Japan for Tanabata, you are sure to see Tanzaku somewhere. Why not try writing a wish of your own?

Good morning! As of 10 AM on July 7th, the temperature is 17.6℃. Some people might feel a bit chilly, but in recent years, it's not uncommon for Tomakomai to exceed 30℃. It used to be known for its coolness even in summer, making me feel like I've gone back in time. By the way, did you know there's an area in front of the Tomakomai Chūō Library where plants native to Tomakomai are planted?🌿 You can also see the "Yachiyanagi" used in Tomakomai's craft beer "Kamuy Geiru Retara"!🍺

Deaibashi and Todorokibashi ❚ Oita Bungoono Geopark Located in Kiyokawamachi, Bungoono City, Oita Prefecture, are Deaibashi and Todorokibashi. This area boasts the largest and second-largest arch spans of stone bridges in Japan, making it a very precious location. Todorokibashi measures 32.1 meters, making it the largest in Japan, while Deaibashi measures 29.3 meters, ranking second. Deaibashi was completed in 1924, built by the local residents as an important road connecting the community. Todorokibashi was completed in 1934, historically constructed as a bridge for a forest railway transporting timber. Furthermore, these two bridges have been recognized as Civil Engineering Heritage by the Japan Society of Civil Engineers for the fiscal year 2025, drawing renewed attention as historically valuable landscapes. You can drive close to the area, and Todorokibashi is still used as a road bridge. In contrast, Deaibashi is a pedestrian bridge, allowing visitors to enjoy its unique charm on foot. The Okudake River flowing beneath the bridge and the surrounding columnar jointing landscape are also appealing features. A place where you can encounter the beauty of both history and nature. 【Gathering of Kabu!】 The longest day of the year with the most sunlight. With the sunrise, about 20 Kabu riders set off from GA.KOPPER Ground. The "Geshi Kabu" event where Kabu riders gather on the summer solstice. This year marks the 5th edition! On Saturday, June 20th, the day before the solstice, Kabu began to arrive one after another from early afternoon, and familiar faces greeted each other with lively conversation. It was a bit chilly that day, with a misty rain falling. Even so, the chatter among the Kabu riders never ceased…! As a fire was lit behind GA.KOPPER, the Kabu riders naturally gathered around, enjoying a relaxing time with drinks in hand. At this year's Geshi Kabu, the word "Geshi" was seen everywhere, on T-shirts, sake barrels, and masu. Gathered around the fire, both Kabu and people formed a circle, sipping sake and savoring meat and vegetables. The loudest cheers erupted when the pizza baked in the earth oven was served. Instead of "Pizza Hut," the "Kabu Hut" delivered pizzas to participants on Kabu! 🍕 With our stomachs filled, we danced to the live performance of the Hokkaido Bon Dance and the Geshi Kabu Ondo, and gradually made our way into the room. The sunrise on the summer solstice was at 3:42 AM. Despite the fun, everyone had an early departure. Though we all started off together, we set off at our own pace in our desired directions. Thank you for joining us from all over the country! Let’s meet again at the next Geshi Kabu~ 👋 #Geshi Kabu #Kabu #GA.KOPPER #Geshi Bashiri
