The 39th On Take-ryu Kagura Taikai was held at "Kagura-no-Sato Noh Stage Park" in Kiyokawacho, Bungoono City, Oita Prefecture, on Sunday, October 25, 2026. This year, in addition to On Take Kagura and the Kiyokawacho Children’s Kagura Preservation Society, four other kagura troupes from inside and outside the city gathered to showcase their performances. One of the highlights was the "Encounter Kagura." Three kagura troupes performed the same piece simultaneously on three adjacent stages. The Shikoku Pilgrimage is traditionally attributed to Kukai, and for over 1,200 years, it has been passed down through pilgrims and local residents. The pilgrimage route spans the entire Shikoku region, covering approximately 1,400 kilometers. Completing all 88 sacred sites on foot often takes more than a month, and there are not many places along the way that provide shelter from the wind and rain or a place to rest. This is where the "Pilgrim Huts" come into play. The origin of the Pilgrim Huts can be traced back to 2001. Architect Ge Yiyang initiated the "Shikoku 88 Temple Pilgrimage Hut Project" that year, constructing wooden huts along the pilgrimage route to allow pilgrims to rest and nap. The project is scheduled to take over a decade, building huts at 89 locations along the pilgrimage route with the help of volunteers. Each hut is planned and designed by Ge Yiyang, drawing inspiration from local characteristics, and constructed by local residents and support group members as volunteers. Each hut's design incorporates elements of the local environment, traditions, and architectural culture, as well as Kukai's philosophy, resulting in a variety of shapes that themselves become a scenic attraction. Today, the Pilgrim Huts have also become places for local residents to "host" pilgrims and exchange experiences, allowing the centuries-old pilgrimage culture to continue being passed down through these huts.

In a garden glowing with autumn colors, enjoy a cup of tea. On a night illuminated by the Mid-Autumn Moon. The pure Japanese garden, Korakuen, was lit up as if the moonlight had descended, allowing us to relish the night foliage instead of night cherry blossoms. Walking along the path of light from the garden entrance, we could see the illuminated autumn leaves and pavilions on both the right and left. Without the prepared lighting, the night Korakuen would be so dark that one couldn't distinguish between the soil and the roots of the trees. The sight of leaves, stones, moss, and lanterns floating in the darkness due to the various lights was truly wonderful. The redness of the autumn leaves was more vivid than during the day and burned into the back of my eyelids. On the night of the illumination, a tea ceremony was held at the tea room, Korakutei, within the garden. The tea utensils were adorned with autumn leaves, and the sweets and tea bowls also revealed the essence of autumn. While savoring the sweetness of the sweets and the warmth of the tea, we fully enjoyed the autumn tea ceremony. - This illumination project was held for the third time, following last autumn and this spring. Thanks to this event, we met many villagers visiting Korakuen for the first time, those who look forward to coming every time, and visitors from nearby towns, among others. May this wonderful garden continue to be a cherished place for many in the future. Korakuen will be closed for the winter, so in the remaining few days, I would be delighted if you could come and visit.

The representative mountain of Tomakomai, Mt. Tarumae. It was formed by a medium-sized eruption in 1909, resulting in the lava dome that can be seen today. This lava dome is designated as a natural monument by Hokkaido and is globally significant for academic research. As of October 18th, the volcanic alert level for Mt. Tarumae is at level 1. Climbing is possible, but access to the lava dome is restricted for safety reasons, so please enjoy the impressive aerial photos.

The short period of sword-making and the brief time spent on works during his father's era resulted in an extremely low number of pieces. This piece is a collaboration between the second generation Omi Daijo and the third generation Mutsu no Kami, with both the ji and ha being of excellent quality, making it a masterpiece. On my way to Shikaoicho to capture the autumn leaves, I saw a large animal crossing the road a few hundred meters ahead. It looked much bigger than a dog or a fox, possibly a wild boar or a brown bear, but there are no wild boars in Hokkaido. When I stopped the car and cautiously looked around, I spotted a group of Yezo sika deer, probably following a stag. This time of year is the breeding season, so Yezo sika deer are quite active. Just yesterday, a stag suddenly dashed out in the early morning, forcing me to slam on the brakes. The male Yezo sika deer are larger than a foal, so colliding with one could easily result in a severely damaged vehicle that is no longer drivable. Please be cautious while driving in Hokkaido.

Jindaiji is a wonderful place rich in nature, known for its delicious soba, and it even offers pottery experiences (painting, bisque firing, and items can be taken home the same day). Soba manju and dumplings are also delicious. For someone like me who loves nature, art, and food culture, it is a place full of memories.

Today, I visited a vineyard on the mountain to experience grape picking. This time, I picked "Kagawa University R-1," a grape developed by Kagawa University specifically for winemaking and processing. It is bred from the wild grape "Ryukyu Ganev" found in Okinawa and Amami, combined with the high-quality greenhouse grape "Muscat of Alexandria." Although the grape berries weigh only about 1 gram, their skins are rich in polyphenols and anthocyanins. I have previously picked grapes at tourist orchards, but this experience was completely different. In tourist orchards, the grapes hang in clusters on the trellises, making them easy to pick, but the grapes for winemaking grow freely on the trellises, with branches and leaves intertwined, requiring some effort to find the clusters. The entire vineyard is set on a slope, with drainage ditches below, so one must be careful with their steps while picking, as it is not the easy fruit-picking experience one might imagine. After washing the picked grapes, they are sent to the factory to be juiced, beginning the journey of winemaking. The wine made from R-1 grapes is named "Sauvageonne Savoureuse," featuring a rich color and less astringency, and is sold in the prefecture under the Kagawa University brand of wine. Walking into the vineyard, I realized that behind a bottle of wine, there is not only the mountain scenery but also the culmination of varietal development and the hard work of farmers.
