[English/Japanese] Mitsuhashi", a store specializing in natto (sweetened fermented soybeans), is a 15-minute walk from the school. Kanro natto is a Japanese sweet made by boiling down beans in molasses and sprinkling sugar on them. Mitsubashi's natto is very carefully made and has an elegant taste. When I talked about natto to foreign students, they all reacted to the word "natto" and made a disgusted face. There are so many foreigners who do not like natto. But when I explain it properly, they all say they would love to try it. Since there are many bean snacks in Southeast Asia, they are interested in kanro natto. They don't sell kanro natto in midsummer, so if you are interested in kanro natto, please go there before summer. A 15-minute walk from the school is Mitsubashi, a honeydew natto specialty store. [English/Japanese] I visited Soto Terrace, a spot that opened last November to promote Hachioji's traditional culture. It is a 7-minute walk from Hachioji Station. You can reach it by passing through a small street in Hanamachi. I visited at night so it was very quiet, but I heard it is very lively on weekends and holidays with events. There is a nice store and I bought some cute sweets. I will report on the sweets I bought next time. Hachioji is an old town, so there are many events and places that convey traditional culture. I think it's a great city for foreign students to learn about Japanese culture! [English/Japanese] The other day I bought a French pastry called "Galette des Rois" at "Patisserie Tatsuya Sasaki" just a 4 minute walk from Nishi Hachioji! It is famous in France as a cake eaten on January 6. The cake is not only delicious but also enjoyable, as there is a ceramic doll inside the cake and the person who wins it can become a king. What do you do on New Year's in your country? Most of our international students have their New Year's in February or April! They have a very lively time, eating the country's traditional food and having festivals. When a new year starts, you will feel renewed 😊We wish you all a happy new year! [English/Japanese] Tengu-yaki, a souvenir I bought on a field trip to Mt. Takao. It is shaped like a tengu, a demon said to live in Mt. I thought the filling was red bean paste, but it was made of crushed black beans, and the elegant sweetness was very delicious. Our school is located at Nishi-Hachioji Station, next to Takao Station. It took first place in the recently announced "Really Comfortable City to Live in Ranking". Nishi-Hachioji is located along the Chuo Line, which connects to Tokyo and Shinjuku, between Hachioji, which is convenient for shopping, and Takao, which is rich in nature. It is recommended for its many supermarkets and hospitals, and inexpensive rent 😊. The souvenir "tengu yaki" that I got when I went on an excursion to Mt. Takao. [English/Japanese] A 15-minute walk from Hachioji Station, I bought a "Hachioji Castle Monaka" at the Japanese sweets shop Senshuen. In fact, there was a castle in Hachioji in the 16th century. This "Hachioji Castle Monaka" is a confectionary shaped like the castle that existed at that time. The monaka is filled with sweet bean paste and is very tasty 😊By the way, Hachioji Castle is no longer there, but the place where the castle used to be is now a park. I would like to visit there with my students someday. A 15-minute walk from Hachioji Station, I bought "Hachioji Castle Monaka" at the Japanese confectionery shop Senshoen. [Englsih] Cafe Kojika is a 10-minute walk from Hachioji Station. The interior of Cafe Kojika is decorated in the 1970s, so you can enjoy your meal in an old Japanese house. The prices are all one coin and even better, they were very tasty 😊My top recommendation is the cream soda. You can have your favorite color juice made. There are many international students who would like to do a homestay. However, due to the corona, they don't have a chance to do a homestay, so I recommend this kind of old house café to such students. Cafe Oga is a 10-minute walk from Hachioji Station. Visited Shibamata for the first time over the weekend. I'd been meaning to go for a while because it seemed like an interesting place to visit in Tokyo, but I just hadn't had the chance until now. It was a really nice place and I was surprised at how few people were there. There was a ton of shops lined up along the main street and the wooden buildings gave it a really nice atmosphere. I haven't seen Otoko wa Tsurai yo, but there were statues and posters of Tora-san everywhere, even inside shops and stuff. I guess I'll have to watch it some time when I have the chance. We ended up eating lunch at one of the restaurants along the main road and they had some Tora Miso Ramen so we decided to try it. It was pretty good and had a decent amount of vegetables in it as well, so moderately healthy for ramen I suppose. We also got some dessert at a cafe afterwards and she got some dango while I ordered an ice cream float. We also went to the nearby temple Shibamata Taishakuten (柴又帝釈天), or Daikyoji Temple and walked around the main temple grounds and also bought tickets to see the garden and the architecture inside the temple. The garden was really pretty and the walkway around it was quite nice to walk on. I really enjoyed viewing the inside of the temple as there was a ton of hand-carved panels depicting different scenes. There were descriptions below each of the panels that described them as well, and they were interesting to read. It seemed like they were all carved by different people but they were all highly skilled. When we were leaving we found a nice little shows style candy shop and we bought some snacks and played a round of pinball on one of the pinball machines inside the shop. Haven’t played pinball since I was a kid, was pretty nostalgic. If you're in Tokyo I definitely recommend giving this place a visit on the weekend.
