[Sunday, July 13] is the day the Ice Tunnel opens A popular spot in Nishiokoppe Village —The Ice Tunnel— This hidden gem can only be seen in summer. Because there is less snow than usual this year the opening will be held not on the final Sunday of July but on the mid-month date of Sunday the 13th! However, sightings of bears or other unavoidable reasons may force the event to be canceled. Last year, although heavy snow had already melted and the tunnel-shaped ice could not be seen, visitors were able to go farther inside than usual and enjoy a special experience. A mountain-opening Shinto ceremony to pray for safety took place at the summit of Mt. Tarumae on June 12th. A newly installed information board now includes an English description. Mt. Tarumae stands at 1,041 meters and is considered relatively easy to climb. Some hikers are seen wearing sandals, thin-soled sneakers, or short sleeves and shorts, but we recommend trekking shoes and a windbreaker. (The trails are slippery due to pumice ejected during past eruptions, and strong winds always blow at the summit.)

Introduction to Flowers at Kamu June 6 (Friday) The rain from the previous day had cleared, and the sun showed its face. I went to take pictures of the flowers at the Roadside Station Kamu Flower Park. Hellebores and pulsatillas that bloomed a month ago were bearing fruit, and I spotted buds that are about to open. The park manager kindly told me the names of the flowers, and I created a flower description display. It is posted at the entrance of Kamu, so please take a look! If you want to see the real thing, by all means step into the Flower Park. Strolling while enjoying a soft-serve made from grass-fed milk is also recommended for this season. I visited on June 6th and was able to see cherry trout (sakuramasu) making their way upstream! When I walk around town, I see many different flowers. This time, I found a lily of the valley. Lily of the valley is one of Hokkaido’s representative flowers, and the native species reportedly grows wild in the highlands of Tohoku and Hokkaido. About a dozen small, white, bell-shaped flowers hang from a single stalk. This flower is fragrant, and after blooming it produces a spherical fruit that ripens red, but the entire plant is poisonous, so caution is advised. Its flowering season is May and June, so I hope to enjoy it for the rest of this month. An opening event for the Tokutoku Community Center, located next to Shintoku Station, will be held starting at 10:00 AM on Sunday, June 15.
