On Saturday, October 24th, the earliest Christmas tree lighting ceremony in Japan, "Hiroo Santa Land Tree Lighting Ceremony 2026," will take place. 😊

In addition to the "Santa Land Christmas Market," a variety of events will be held, including a sound festival featuring the Hiroo Santa Land Jazz School and the ensemble group "Sogaku." 🎵

During the lighting ceremony, children from Hiroo Nursery School and Toyone Nursery School will perform Christmas songs. At the moment the lights are turned on, approximately 150,000 lights and about 10,000 wooden lanterns will illuminate the venue, creating a romantic Christmas atmosphere. ✨✨

Additionally, fireworks will be launched to conclude the event, and special Christmas gifts will be distributed to children under elementary school age who attend. 😍

In a garden glowing with autumn colors, enjoy a cup of tea.
On a night illuminated by the Mid-Autumn Moon.
The pure Japanese garden, Korakuen, was lit up as if the moonlight had descended, allowing us to relish the night foliage instead of night cherry blossoms.

Walking along the path of light from the garden entrance,
we could see the illuminated autumn leaves and pavilions on both the right and left.

Without the prepared lighting,
the night Korakuen would be so dark that one couldn't distinguish between the soil and the roots of the trees.

The sight of leaves, stones, moss, and lanterns floating in the darkness due to the various lights was truly wonderful.

The redness of the autumn leaves was more vivid than during the day and burned into the back of my eyelids.

On the night of the illumination,
a tea ceremony was held at the tea room, Korakutei, within the garden.

The tea utensils were adorned with autumn leaves, and the sweets and tea bowls also revealed the essence of autumn.

While savoring the sweetness of the sweets and the warmth of the tea,
we fully enjoyed the autumn tea ceremony.

This illumination project
was held for the third time, following last autumn and this spring.

Thanks to this event, we met many villagers visiting Korakuen for the first time,
those who look forward to coming every time,
and visitors from nearby towns, among others.

May this wonderful garden
continue to be a cherished place for many in the future.

Korakuen will be closed for the winter,
so in the remaining few days, I would be delighted if you could come and visit.

The traveling bookstore and candy shop
In September, the traveling Yukimichi Bookstore was held at
Kobanko📚

Books about horses and bears, books on succulents and fungi, and books on beautiful libraries around the world were all present.

Each book piqued my curiosity.
The succulent seedlings in the basket were adorable too🌿

On this day, there was also a booth from the candy shop "Egao-ya" in Monbetsu!

Next to the children happily choosing sweets, I found snacks I used to enjoy and got really excited.

Not only shopping
but also satisfying small hunger and playing with Lego blocks...

While everyone spent their time as they pleased,
I flipped through the intriguing books.

It was so cozy that I ended up spending more time than planned.

The next traveling Yukimichi Bookstore will be

The representative mountain of Tomakomai, Mt. Tarumae.
It was formed by a medium-sized eruption in 1909, resulting in the lava dome that can be seen today.
This lava dome is designated as a natural monument by Hokkaido and is globally significant for academic research.
As of October 18th, the volcanic alert level for Mt. Tarumae is at level 1.
Climbing is possible, but access to the lava dome is restricted for safety reasons, so please enjoy the impressive aerial photos.

On the afternoon of October 14th, Lake Utonai as seen from the barrier-free observation path.
The sight of about 1,000 barnacle geese suddenly taking off from the lake is quite impressive.
During this time of year, you might hear the lively calls of barnacle geese, "kahahan kahahan," even in the city. When that happens, look up at the sky. You might catch a glimpse of them flying in a V formation.

On my way to Shikaoicho to capture the autumn leaves, I saw a large animal crossing the road a few hundred meters ahead. It looked much bigger than a dog or a fox, possibly a wild boar or a brown bear, but there are no wild boars in Hokkaido. When I stopped the car and cautiously looked around, I spotted a group of Yezo sika deer, probably following a stag. This time of year is the breeding season, so Yezo sika deer are quite active. Just yesterday, a stag suddenly dashed out in the early morning, forcing me to slam on the brakes. The male Yezo sika deer are larger than a foal, so colliding with one could easily result in a severely damaged vehicle that is no longer drivable. Please be cautious while driving in Hokkaido.

The 21st Autumn Walk in Kinsenkyo will be held as scheduled on Saturday, October 10, 2026. Participants are requested to complete registration at the parking lot in front of Takinoue Town Hotel Keikoku (in front of Takinoue Town Local History Museum) by 9:45.

Takinoue Gorge, known for its beautiful autumn leaves, is easily accessible from the Roadside Station and hotels, making it a great spot for a leisurely stroll.

Today, the Roadside Station "Kaori no Sato Takinoue" will host the Food Truck Party in TAKINOUE, featuring food trucks offering original menus made with local ingredients.
