[Giant Setoushi-kun Appears!?] Roadside Station Kam sits along National Route 239. At its entrance a giant Setoushi-kun appears for a limited time! We were able to borrow hay rolls wrapped in white plastic from local dairy farmers in the village, so we decided to go all out and paint Setoushi-kun. When only orange and green were used, passersby puzzled over whether it was a pumpkin or a mandarin… (laughs) Once the eyes were added, it instantly looked like Setoushi-kun! Please stop by and take a look when you pass through! We’ve also included before-and-after photos *^-^* #Nishiokoppe Village #Hokkaido #local mascot #Setoushi-kun #oversized #hay roll #limited time #Roadside Station #Kam

Hello 😃 This is Ryusuido at Shosenkyo Crystal Valley. The greenery 🌿 has deepened and grown more vivid, making this a perfect season for a walk. The rainy season ☔️ is coming, but on rainy days the gorge looks like an ink painting—mysterious and enchanting—and offers a different side of Shosenkyo to enjoy‼️ Ryusuido reopened after renovations on May 1. Reborn with the concept of “healing,” the space has been refreshed! We hope good fortune ✨ visits everyone who comes. Inside the shop, the symbols of ascending and descending dragons create a soothing atmosphere where you can hear the sound of Senga Falls and feel the warmth of natural wood☺️ There are many spots above the falls where you can forget your daily life and simply enjoy yourself, so please come visit Shosenkyo‼️ We look forward to the day we can see your wonderful smiles.

This introduces the legend of Shippeitaro, the figure that inspired Iwata City’s image character "Shippei." Long ago, every year a white-feathered arrow would lodge in the ridge of a house, and the daughter of that house would be offered as a human sacrifice (a living offering to the gods) at the Mitsuke Tenjin festival on August 10. The villagers wept in sorrow at each festival. One year, a traveling monk visiting Mitsuke heard this tale and wondered if the custom could be ended. He discovered that monsters were behind it and overheard them whisper, “Do not tell Shippeitaro of Shinano Province.” The monk set out for Shinano Province (present-day Nagano Prefecture) to find Shippeitaro. There he learned that Shippeitaro was a dog kept at Kozenji Temple in Komagane, Nagano Prefecture, and he borrowed the dog. The following August, on the day of the festival, the monk placed Shippeitaro in a coffin as a stand-in for the human sacrifice and offered it to Mitsuke Tenjin. The moment the monsters opened the coffin, Shippeitaro leapt at them and, after a long struggle, defeated them. The creature proved to be a huge, elderly baboon. After that, the custom of human sacrifice disappeared. Some say Shippeitaro, wounded in the fight, reached Kozenji Temple and died there; others say he died on the journey home. Iwata City and Komagane City became sister cities through this Shippeitaro legend. In Komagane City, Shippeitaro is called Hayataro, and Kozenji Temple has Hayataro’s grave.

Shibazakura Phlox Marche On May 19, I visited the Phlox Marche held at Shibazakura Takinoue Park. It was the perfect moment of full bloom, and a pink carpet stretched as far as the eye could see.🌸 That day featured a “Local Mascots Gathering,” with booths set up side by side from Omu, Engaru, and Monbetsu. Several large tour buses arrived, and the line for soft serve never seemed to shrink. I was amazed by how many visitors came! At the Nishiokoppe booth, we sold Ezo deer leather crafts, pet food, and drinking yogurt from Milk Design Co. Many people enjoyed the park with their dogs, which helped sales of deer jerky and Achilles sticks for dogs sell well. When the local mascots appeared, many children were delighted. It was adorable to see all the different characters lined up *^-^* Items sold at the Phlox Marche are also available at Hotel Morimu and Roadside Station Kam. We look forward to seeing you again at another lively event! #Takinoue Town #Shibazakura Park #Shibazakura Festival #Phlox Marche #Marche #Booth Exhibits #Local Mascots Gathering #Setoushi-kun #Nishiokoppe Village #Game Management Association #Ezo deer #Milk Design
