🍁 Shosenkyo Gorge’s autumn leaves are at their best! Come visit Shosenkyo as fall deepens! 🍁 A message from Shosenkyo Tourist Association’s mascot, Shosenkyatto ✨ The gorge has been cooling down, and the foliage is coloring up nicely. It stayed warm for a while this year, so the colors were delayed, but they’re looking great now—please come see them! I’m sending photos I took today for reference 😀 Expect crowds on Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays. If you’re driving, arrive early to secure parking 🚗 Use the city or prefectural lots or free parking areas. If you use a shop’s parking, be sure to check the usage rules ☝️ Mornings and evenings are getting chilly, so don’t forget warm clothing, okay?? Below are the names of the spots in the photos—please visit them 😄 1. Kakuen Peak 2. Senga Falls 3. From Shosenkyo Bridge 4. Crystal Fountain 5. Osada Enyuemon's Monument 6. From Nagatoro Bridge 7. Ishimon 8. Ai no Kakehashi 9. Arakawa Dam 10. Arakawa Dam See you at Shosenkyo! 😆

Scuba Diving in Atami, Japan — A Day Full of Color and Connection 🪸 A few days ago, we went diving in Atami, Shizuoka, one of Japan’s most popular wreck diving sites just a short trip from Tokyo. The moment we descended, we were surrounded by thousands of colorful fish, swirling around the shipwreck like a living rainbow. The vibrant soft corals covering the wreck made the underwater scenery absolutely breathtaking. 🌈 It was an especially memorable day because one of our guests completed their PADI Advanced Open Water Diver course! 🎉 Congratulations on reaching this new milestone in your scuba journey. Every certification represents more confidence, more discovery, and deeper connection with the sea. We were also delighted to dive with a wonderful guest visiting from France 🇫🇷, who made the most of his stay in Japan through diving. Sharing the ocean with divers from around the world reminds us that the sea connects people beyond borders. 💙 Thank you to all our amazing guests for bringing your energy and smiles. Whether you’re trying fun diving near Tokyo, taking a PADI license course, or exploring Japan’s hidden underwater gems, we’re here to make every dive unforgettable. At Hokule’a Shonan, we offer small-group diving trips, from Atami and Izu to Okinawa — all led by certified PADI instructors. 🌺 Contact us anytime to plan your next diving adventure in Japan! 🌊 ---------------------------- 🌈 About Hokule’a Shonan Hokule’a Shonan is a PADI 5⭐️ diving center located in Hiratsuka, Kanagawa, just a short train ride from Tokyo. Autumn leaves in Gokasecho🍁 The autumn colors in Gokasecho have suddenly deepened over the past few days🍁 The foliage in front of Shirataki Falls in Kuraoka District is not fully colored yet, but overall the area is at peak color✨ I also visited Myoken Shrine and other spots in Kuraoka District; the maples there still need a bit more time to peak💡 Some areas will continue to change color, but how about a drive to see Gokase’s autumn leaves this weekend?😊 ⚠Notice⚠ The road to Shirataki is a forest road with poor conditions. There is little space for cars to pass. We do not recommend driving if you lack confidence, are in a large vehicle, or are driving a low-clearance car.

Teshikaga Night Sky Enjoyment Workshop Thanks to your support, we have reached the 12th Teshikaga Night Sky Enjoyment Workshop. This year’s theme is the much-anticipated Geminids meteor shower. The program includes a classroom lecture and an observation session. Why is Teshikaga’s night sky so stunning? How should we protect and make the most of this night sky? What exactly is a meteor shower? What are tips for enjoying it? Which astronomical events should you watch for next year? This workshop is packed with answers and insights. If the sky is clear, we will go outside and observe the meteor shower. We hope you get to see bright meteors that can compete with the waning moonlight. Atami – Where Adventure Meets Serenity Just 90 minutes from Tokyo, Atami in Shizuoka offers one of the most fascinating diving experiences in Japan — where adventure and serenity come together beneath the surface. Known for its wreck diving and mysterious blue cave, Atami attracts divers who seek both excitement and peace in one destination. The highlight of Atami is the wreck of Asahi No.16, one of the largest wrecks in Japan. Resting quietly on the seafloor, this massive structure is now covered in colorful soft corals and swarming with marine life. As you descend, the silhouette of the wreck slowly appears out of the blue — a breathtaking sight that makes you feel like you’re stepping into an underwater museum. Exploring this wreck is an unforgettable experience for divers who love large-scale structures full of history and mystery. Then, shift from adventure to calm in Atami’s Blue Cave. As you enter, sunlight pierces through the narrow opening, filling the space with an ethereal blue glow. The soft light, bubbles rising toward the surface, and the quiet stillness of the cave create a dreamlike world beneath the waves. It’s a moment of pure serenity — a dive that connects you deeply with the ocean. Whether you’re looking for thrilling wreck diving or a peaceful cave dive, Atami offers both just a short train ride from Tokyo. With easy access, clear water, and diverse dive sites, it’s a perfect destination for weekend divers and international visitors alike. Nagano Shiojiri City Tourist Association.
Nov. 4, 2025
Shiojiri-juku Location: Shiojiri City, Shiojirimachi The old Nakasendo route that crossed Misawa Pass, Ono-juku and Ushikubi Pass from Shimosuwa-shuku was abolished in 1613 (Keichō 18). From 1614 (Keichō 19) the Nakasendo was rerouted via Shiojiri Pass and the new Shiojiri-juku was established. The town layout work was overseen by Ogasawara Hidemasa, lord of Matsumoto Domain. He laid out the new Shiojiri-juku in an east–west plan southwest of the old post town. The honjin was one of the largest on the Nakasendo, and the post town also featured a noticeboard area and a Matsumoto Domain checkpoint. Plots in the post town were typically three to four ken wide. By 1843 (Tenpō 14) the town had 166 households, including 75 inns — the largest number among the 26 post towns of Shinshu, due to its position at a road junction below Shiojiri Pass. Major fires in 1828 (Bunsei 11) and 1882 (Meiji 15) destroyed much of the town, but the Ono family house, a National Important Cultural Property, still evokes the town’s former appearance.

【Nakasendo and 5 Post Towns in Shiojiri City】

There are 69 Shukuba on the Nakasendo Road between Edo Japan Bridge and Kyoto Sanjo Ohashi Bridge.
Although there are more hills in the Shiojiri City area than on the Tokaido, there was no long stay in the river, so we were able to pass as planned.
There were five shukuba on the Nakasendo road in the Shiojiri city area: Shiojiri Inn, Washima Inn, Motoyama Inn, Niekawa Juku, and Narai Juku.

(1) Shiojiri Inn -Shiojirijuku- (30th from Edo Japan Bridge)
Shiojiri inn was set up in Sakai in the Matsumoto and Suwa territories to change Rice shells and contraband items, and the honjin and wakihonjin used for attendance shifts were established, and the number of hatagoya was the second largest in Nakasendo and the largest in Shinano at the end of the Bakumatsu shogunate.

(2) Washima inn -Barajuku- (31st from Edo Japan Bridge)
It is a Shukuba that corresponds to the follow-up of the Nakasendo Road and Zenkoji Temple Highway. The inn was equipped with one of only three Kanme Kaisho on Nakasendo. Most of the faces of the Shukuba were destroyed by the great fire in the early Showa period, but the stone lantern of the night light remains in the place where it hits.

(3) Motoyama inn -Motoyamajuku- (32nd from Edo Japan Bridge)
Motoyama inn is said to be the birthplace of Soba cutting. It flourished as the entrance to Kisoji Road and the exit of Matsumotodaira. Honjin became a Accommodation when the Imperial Princess Wagu married Tokugawa Ieshige and during the Meiji Emperor's visit in 1880 (Meiji 13).

(4) Niekawa Juku -Niekawajuku- (33rd from Edo Japan Bridge)
Niekawa Juku is the entrance to Kisoji 11 Inn. As a transportation hub on the Nakasendo Highway, the Kakegawa Checkpoint was located, and it developed in the Accommodation industry and remote area commerce.

(5) Narai juku -Naraijuku- (34th from Edo Japan Bridge)
The Shukuba was called "Narai Senken" and was crowded. Richly preserved of the faces of that time, it is now visited by many people as a popular Sightseeing spot.

【Shimanto City, Kochi Prefecture】Eat the river! Sweetfish! Eel! River shrimp! Gori! "Traditional fishing method" that is close to the Shimanto River Introducing the traditional fishing methods passed down by river fishermen in the Shimanto River. We will introduce the important culture of the river basin that is close to the river and appreciates the blessings of the river. 〇Traditional fishing method of the Shimanto River The traditional fishing method of the Shimanto River has been carefully passed down by Local river fishermen, and it continues to be a part of daily life, changing its shape little by little with changes in the environment. The bounty of the Shimanto River, such as sweetfish, eel, scampi shrimp, and aosanori, adds color to the family table every season, and is deliciously cooked by skilled chefs in Shimanto City to delight the taste buds of tourists. It is also processed in various ways and is popular as a Souvenir. 〇 Look at the river, eat the river If you take a leisurely stroll along the Shimanto River, you can see eels and scampi shrimp submerged in water from the Submersible Bridge. Depending on the season, you may meet people fishing for sweetfish in the river or fishing in riverboats. There may be a gori fishing device lined with stones on the riverbank, or the harvest of green nori is just taking place at the mouth of the river. If you take the time to look at the Shimanto River, you will encounter something "river and human activities". And at night, you can enjoy the Ingredients harvested by the contraptions you actually saw in the river at the restaurant. It is a different way to enjoy the "familiar" Shimanto River. 〇 Introduction of traditional fishing methods ・Fire fishing of sweetfish Set up nets to cross the river in advance, and wave a Bonfire from the top of the boat at night. Surprised by the raging band of flames, the sweetfish flees and is driven into the net. Nowadays, it is often done using LEDs, but the principle is a traditional fishing method that has not changed since ancient times. sweetfish are also caught in Other by various fishing methods such as casting nets and fishing. ・Scampi shrimp fishing If you look from the Submersible Bridge near the water's edge, you can see a series of PVC pipes evenly spaced. This is a fishing gear called "Korobashi" that collects scampi shrimp. In the past, it was made of wood, but over time it has changed to a Ingredients that is easier to handle. Standard scampi shrimp are brightly colored and eaten with karaage. In addition, it is useful as a Township taste, such as resembling a large raised cucumber. ・Eel fishing There are Styrofoam and plastic bottles floating in the river without streaming. This may be a landmark of Korobashi catching eels. Eels, which are sensitive to odors, do not enter resin contraptions, and wooden korobashi is still used even now. ・Gori fishing If the riverbank is lined with stones that dammed the water, it may be a gimmick for Gori's Noborio Toshiue fishing. In the Shimanto River, the juveniles of Numatitib are called "gori" and are popular as a taste of early summer from Spring. Standard is to eat it as karaage or tsukuni. 〇Things to be aware of Fishery rights are set for fishing in the Shimanto River. When fishing, it is mandatory to purchase a recreational fishing ticket. In addition, a fishing ban period has been established from the viewpoint of protecting Minamoto. Please be careful.
