Chinda Falls (Chinda no Taki) – Kyushu, Oita Prefecture, Bungoono City Chinda Falls consists of the male fall on the main stream of the Ono River and the female fall on the Hirai River, a tributary. The male fall measures about 100 m across and 20 m high, while the female fall is about 10 m across and 18 m high. The rocks that form Chinda Falls were deposited by the pyroclastic flows from the great eruption of Mount Aso approximately 90,000 years ago. The site is also famous because Sesshū, the ink-painting master active during the Muromachi period, visited and painted “Chinda Waterfall.” Near the falls lie the remains of an old hydroelectric power station built in the Meiji era. Baikoan Located in Tsukigase, Nara, Baikoan is Japan’s sole maker of karoubai (processed plum) that has preserved a production method passed down there for about seven hundred years without alteration. Karoubai refers to processed ume fruit, introduced to Nara as a medicine some 1,300 years ago by envoys to Sui and Tang China. Around seven hundred years ago, during the Nanbokucho period, it reached Tsukigase as a mordant for safflower dyeing. From the late Edo period through the early Meiji era, karoubai reached its heyday as a mordant for cosmetic red dye, and some 400 karoubai workshops operated, but demand plunged after the invention of chemical dyes. By the early Showa era only a few producers remained; after the war Baikoan became the sole manufacturer and continues to this day. Baikoan cultivates plums, rice, and vegetables and processes food across 30,000 square meters of verdant land and rich nature. Although the plums in Tsukigase were originally planted to make karoubai, the sight of plum trees in full bloom reflected on the valley and river of the Satsukigawa captivated people and made this area Japan’s first officially designated scenic spot. During the plum festival from February through the end of March, our shop offers dining and hanami from scenic box seats filled with the scent of plum. In Reiwa 6 (2024) we built the Nara Beni Workshop. This Japanese-style building incorporates traditional Japanese craftsmanship throughout. Inside the workshop, where you can feel delicate, advanced techniques and Japanese aesthetics, visitors can experience safflower dyeing using karoubai. We hope the experience becomes an opportunity to rediscover the wonders of Japanese culture. Watching the ever-changing colors of nature and the early-morning sea of clouds spreading across the Tsukigase valley can create the illusion of being in a plum paradise. Early spring light, tranquil fresh greens, the bounty of autumn, the scents of winter. We live and work with the seasons in the strict yet warm nature of Tsukigase.

【Friday, August 9 — Yoichi Okumura’s Toybox-Like Solo Exhibition 🧸🪁⭐】 You may have noticed his soft, rounded sculptures around town — at Furutono Shrine, the winery, Chuo Nursery School, and other spots — catching your eye with their gentle presence. The artist behind those works, Yoichi Okumura, is holding a solo exhibition in the assembly hall at Furutono Shrine while continuing his studio practice through the summer.✨ Although he usually lives in Miyazaki City, he stays in Gokasecho for about 40 days each summer, and this year marks his 28th season here.😯💡 Each visit he places works somewhere around Furutono Shrine, so roughly 28 pieces are now hidden around the grounds.😆 Finding them all is said to be quite a challenge…😏 The owl in the third photo is still unfinished, but it will join the collection at Furutono Shrine this year. A treasure-hunt-style stroll around the shrine sounds like fun.😊 His sculptures brim with playfulness: sometimes they carry a single color accent, other times they wear bold hues, and sometimes the stone’s natural color becomes part of the piece’s charm. Using a 6 mm chisel, he essentially paints on the stone with tiny dots — the detail is astonishingly delicate. He also paints, producing gentle, picture-book-style illustrations — truly lovely work.😌 (He has actually published a picture book.) Okumura said that whenever he makes work in Gokasecho he can’t help adding stars to them. The Gokase night sky finds its way into his pieces.⭐👏 We were able to observe him working; the scene felt like he was breathing life into the stone, conversing with each piece as he shaped it. The unworked stones placed near him seemed eager to be made into something, as if quietly asking to be transformed.😊✨ He will remain in Gokase through the end of August, so please consider visiting while you can.🙌 He will also hold a solo exhibition at gallery roof for in Miyazaki City from October 16 to 20. If you have the chance, do go see it.😌

I Went to See the Ice Tunnel The last Sunday in July was the annual day the ice tunnel opened to the public! After a long heatwave and heavy rain a few days earlier, the organizers went to check on the tunnel just before the event to make sure it still existed. Compared with other years, some of the ice nearer the entrance had melted, so visitors picked their way—sometimes through the riverbed—toward the ice deeper inside. Even as we climbed over uneven ground and logs, cool air flowed up from the river, making it refreshingly chilly! I spent the day enjoying the coolness with a friend who had come along for the occasion, then we headed home. We rode a shuttle bus from town, so the trip there and back felt easy and relaxing—enough time for a nap. The variety in the photos is Niagara🍷 Large clusters of plump berries hung everywhere, and they looked so beautiful🥹👏 In the fifth photo, the sunlight shines through the grapes so they look translucent😲—they have a jewel-like beauty👏 Though these berries aren’t fully ripe yet, their fresh green color feels cool, and the vineyard somehow looked stylish to me😳✨ They’ll grow riper and the fragrance will start to float through the air…😌💕 I was told that the earliest varieties will begin to be harvested starting this month… I’m already looking forward to the grapes and the wine🤤🍇✨

[Internship Activity Diary] Nice to meet you. My name is Uehara, and I have been taking part in an internship since August 1st. I have been guided around Isehara City every day, and I am starting to feel the charm of Isehara more and more. Yesterday I visited Koma Sando, which leads up to Oyama Afuri Shrine Lower Shrine. Although I grew tired on the stairs along the way, the waterfalls and shaded trees gave me a pleasantly cool summer relief.🍃 At Kanekoya, now the only shop that makes Oyama koma, I found an array of vivid, variously sized Oyama koma that stopped me in my tracks. I would love to see them making them someday.✨ Today I toured Isehara City from east to west. At Kashiwagi Farm I peeked into the cowshed and found the cows, melting in the heat, oddly endearing.🐄 I visited Sannomiya Hibita Shrine, which has a wooden torii gate and a large harae chigaya ring, creating a lovely atmosphere. Finally, I went to see the sunflower field visible from along the Odakyu Line.
